I'm writing in response to the recent article which someone had linked to elsewhere: http://www.footballguys.com/06yudkin_400touches.php

It seemed like an interesting enough idea -- after a long season of 400 touches and about 350 carries, a workhorse is likely to struggle, presumably due to wear and tear. The article cites an average decrease in games played, touches, and general performance in the following season, which I have no doubt are true. The problem is that the cause isn't some magic number, and the averages are deceptive.

I took a look at the 117 RBs who, in the regular seasons since 1972, had carried at least 70% as often as the #1 workhorse, i.e. the top workhorse and his peers. These guys have had 51 349+ carry seasons. 31% of those seasons were followed by a 30% or greater drop in carries in the next.

In the same period, there have been 333 249+ carry seasons. 33% of those were followed by a similar drop. 38% dropped after a 270 carry season. 27% after a 400 touch season, and 29% after a 300 touch season. Using total yardage to measure performance drops yielded similar results.

These different measurements, whether 400 touches or 250 carries, at any angle, all say the same thing: About 1/3 of RBs will have a significant performance drop after any given season. For all the scary averages the article presents, all it really says is that being an every-down RB is hard. Imagine that.

Here's what I've got.

RBs who had between 250 and 299 touches in Year N averaged 133 fantasy points in Year N+1.

RBs who had between 300 and 349 touches in Year N averaged 160 fantasy points in Year N+1.

RBs who had between 350 and 399 touches in Year N averaged 204 fantasy points in Year N+1.

RBs who had between 400 and 492 touches in Year N averaged 203 fantasy points in Year N+1. (There are only 32 RB-seasons in this group, by far the smallest sample.)

Also the trend within each of the first three groups was that more touches in year N was associated with more fantasy points in year N+1. (So within the first group, for example, the guys with 280-290 touches did better the following year than the guys with 260-270 touches.)

In the fourth group however, the trend within the group was that fewer touches in Year N was associated with more fantasy points in year N+1, although this effect was very slight (probably statistically insignificant).

So if there is a magic cut-off point where more touches in year N portends worse performance in year N+1, that point seems to be at about 400 touches. But the effect is so small, and is based on so few players who've had that many touches, that it is far from clear that there's any such magic cut-off point at all.

Note: These are based on regular season stats only. I did not incorporate post-season stats like David Yudkin did, so he had a bigger sample of 400+ touch seasons to work with, and his numbers more accurately reflect the players' true workloads in a given season. Adding post-season stats like David did is preferable; I just didn't have time. Also, I eliminated any player-seasons in which the player played for more than one NFL team in that season. I don't think doing so had any effect on the results. (I didn't want to add partial seasons together, so I just eliminated them for ease.)

How do those averages break out? If a 400 touch back follows up with either another 400 touch season, or an injury, then the important fact is not the average number of points they score in the next season, but the likelihood of injury or decline in the next season. On the other hand, if the 400 touch back generally declines, but not by much, then we would project them differently.

Also, when did the metric become 400 touches? I thought it was carries (350 regular, or 400 regular and postseason)?

Nice work. This is what I brought up in the thread about that article, that without doing the same thing to find out how production changes for the non-400 touch RBs you can't draw what would be the most meaningful conclusions from the work. We really don't know if the results for the 400+ guys are good, bad, or meaningless in comparison to other players. You filled the gap, very nice.

Some of us looked into this further after the article came out and came to a similar conclusion. That Top scoring RB were destined to go backwards either way. Part of the problem in assessing this is what to do with guys that got hurt. For example, I included Jamal Lewis and assigned him the lowest ranking for a RB the first year he got hurt. If you exclude him, the numbers for guys with 400+ carries and Top 5 RB without 400 carries are pretty similar (they averaged only one spot different in the rankings).

I am still not sure what the numbers mean other than Top 5 RB are destined on average to regress. I am thinking of ways to minimize the effect of injuries that might skew the data but am having a hard time figuring out a way to do that. If a guy got hurt, was that BECAUSE of his workload or just a coincidence. That is impossible to prove either way.

Overall, I think the results of guys with 400+ carries still show that they will not do as well the next year. Whether one caused the other is what's in question, and at this point I would be inclined to say it's inconclusive.

If this does show anything, it does show that a lot of success is based on workload and health, and having both of those from Year X to Year Y is not often a given or a constant.

I am just as frustrated on this one as others, as it does seem that the Top Tier of RBs bottom line are guys that stay healthy and will get the ball A LOT, and I'm not sure there is a way to predict health.

I'm trying to understand the results of this research.

It seems to me that, in a vacuum where we ignore the physical impact of too many touches, 400 touch backs should be expected to be, say, 10% better in year n+1 than 350 touch backs. Yet Maurile's numbers show that that is not the case. It also seems to me that, in that same vacuum, 400 touch backs should be, say, 30% better than 300 touch backs, not 25%. So right off the bat, the question I have is whether, in year n, a 400 touch back scores roughly 203 points, or roughly 25% more than the 300 touch back. Without looking, I expect that the 400 touch back scores significantly more than that.

It also seems to me that, absent that vacuum, a dropoff in a running back's performance could be explained by a reduction in YPT, or a change in the number of touches they see. For a 400 touch back, I'd expect that the reason for a change in the number of carries has more to do with injury or an overall dropoff in the offense. For a 200 touch back, I'd expect that it's more likely they were replaced by a better back, or shared time, or just weren't that good to begin with.

The fact that backs with fewer touches also tend to drop off does not mean that all dropoffs are created equal. There needs to be a qualitative analysis to supplement this quantitative analysis.

David's posted some great qualitative analysis on backs with high numbers of touches in the past. It's pretty compelling. I'd like to have a similar understanding of why backs with fewer touches tend to drop off, before I throw up my hands and say they're all crapshoots.

This is exactly what I was trying to convey . . . that the numbers certainly show something . . . but what?

I read that CP has 801 touches in two yrs (incl playoffs) so I think a better sample would be breaking down all the backs w / 800+ in consc years. You're right the 400 is not valid. Someone check 800/2 yrs and I bet results are interesting .

I think the issue of whether we're talking about playoff touches, and when, is also muddling things. If LT is in a tier for 400 regular season only touches, and another RB is in for 400+ with 2-3 games of playoff touches necessary to hit that level, then if we want to look at how their ranking changes from one year to another it really isn't consistent. LT's ranking was based on 400 touches while the other guy's year N ranking might have been based on 350.

I think the issue of whether we're talking about playoff touches, and when, is also muddling things. If LT is in a tier for 400 regular season only touches, and another RB is in for 400+ with 2-3 games of playoff touches necessary to hit that level, then if we want to look at how their ranking changes from one year to another it really isn't consistent. LT's ranking was based on 400 touches while the other guy's year N ranking might have been based on 350.

It's definitely better to include playoff touches; it's just harder to do. Edit: I just read your post again and see that I missed your point. My answer would be: I don't personally care about Year N ranking all that much, so the point you mention doesn't affect how I would do things. But even if I did care about ranking in Year N (for the purpose of comparing it to ranking in Year N+1), I'd still want to look at ranking based on regular season, but touches based on regular season plus post-season.

For all the slicing and dicing, we have to give a nod to the elephant in the room: All bodies are not created equally.

At the very least, this means that any hard line in the sand is surely to change over time as conditioning changes, which can't be reflected in historical performance stats. This also means that the denominator has to be players. Averages of yards, carries, or ypc across players brush over this: You may be able to say that 10 of 30 players will fall below, say, 3.5 ypc following a 400 touch season, but an average of 3.5 ypc across 30 players following a 400 touch season is misleading. The averages don't give you a chance to think about the individual factors to see whether or not your guy fits the collapsing bill.

Trying to predict future player stats based on past player stats will always prove futile. Stats arent produced that way. They are produced on the football field. There are no magic numbers.

I just decided to run a very simple regression model to see if previous year's touches are a significant factor in predicting this year's fantasy production. Interestingly, I found that they are, but only if you inlcude touches AND the square of touches. I'll explain the significance of this in a moment.

Data used: all running backs since 1978 who had 250 or more touches in Year N. I threw out 1981, 1982, 1986, and 1987 because of the strikes. I didn't include playoff touches, but only because of laziness. I will add them in when I get a free minute.

I'm trying to predict Year N+1 fantasy points using the following inputs:

FPT = Year N fantasy points

TCH = Year N touches

TCH^2 = (Year N touches)^2

Here is the best-fitting formula:

Year N+1 points =~ .77FPT - .004TCH^2 + 2.83TCH - 478

[For regression buffs: yes, all those coefficients are highly significant. p values less than .01.]

The interesting part of that formula (at least for the purposes of this thread) is this: - .004TCH^2 + 2.83TCH - 478. This is a parabola that opens downward. It's peak is at 354. This says that the past data does point to a real dropoff at around 350 touches.

Some examples:

300 touches: -.004TCH^2 + 2.83TCH - 478 = 11

325 touches: -.004TCH^2 + 2.83TCH - 478 = 19

This means that, if two running backs had the same number of fantasy points last year and if one of them had 300 touches and the other had 325 touches, and if you know nothing else about them, you'd expect the 325-touch guy to have about 8 more fantasy points this year.

350 touches: -.004TCH^2 + 2.83TCH - 478 = 22

375 touches: -.004TCH^2 + 2.83TCH - 478 = 21

400 touches: -.004TCH^2 + 2.83TCH - 478 = 14

425 touches: -.004TCH^2 + 2.83TCH - 478 = 2

If two backs had the same number of fantasy points last year, but one of them had 425 touches and the other had 350 touches, you'd expect the 350-touch guy to score about 20 more points this year.

So the past data says that the effect is real, but I want to stress that it's also pretty small. Essentially, if you ran this formula for every back who had over 250 touches last year, and then put them in order from highest to lowest predicted fantasy points, you'd get almost the same order as if you just ranked them by last year's fantasy points.

so then with this in mind, to apply to this logic to a specific player's upcoming season, how does Tiki Barber's '06 season set up?? He's 31yrs old, he touched the ball 427 times last year combined including the playoff game, and the year before he had roughly 380 touches. I just passed on him in a draft and took a younger, less worked RB instead, but Im curious how the 400 touch logic and dropoff would generally apply here with Barber. I think time and touches will catch up to him myself, and believe that he'll fall into the 'third' of players that are negatively impacted, but that's me. Anyone else.....thoughts??
