Leaning Gibson
Antonio Gibson rushed 11 times for 27 yards in Washington's Week 5 loss to the Rams, adding five receptions for 24 yards.
The Football Team clearly wants Gibson to be the centerpiece of the offense. Making that happen in four quarters of negative game script is a different story. Gibson was continually stuffed at the line of scrimmage against LA, recording a long run of six yards. He lost out to J.D. McKissic on pass-catching duty out of the Washington backfield, getting five targets to McKissic's eight. Gibson will be a decent RB2 option in Week 6 against the Giants.

Washington RB Antonio Gibson played 56 percent of the Football Team's offensive snaps in Week 5.
He started the game against the Rams as the focal point of the Washington offense, only to fade late in the first half and into the second half. J.D. McKissick played 50 percent of the team's snaps and saw eight targets, mostly from checkdown artist Alex Smith. Unless Gibson takes over a majority of the pass-catching role out of the Washington backfield, he's going to be dependent on game script. It's not good news for a running back on a bad team.

Great to see Alex Smith back on the field.
He finishes 9/17 for 37 yards and took 6 sacks.

Does he have two functioning legs is the question. Alex Smith is a tackling dummy for the opposition's pass rush. He shouldn't be out on an NFL field.Haskins wasn’t even mentally tough enough to show up after getting benched. I doubt he even had an illness.
Antonio Gibson (toe) was limited in Wednesday's practice.
It's the first we've heard of a toe issue for Gibson, but the limited status puts him on the right side of questionable this early in the week. Gibson and J.D. McKissic have become the Football Team's one-two tandem in the backfield. Gibson is an RB3 in a bad offense, while McKissic is only a desperation PPR play.

Good question. TBH I'm worried about Le'veon coming in right now.So was Gibson's toe injury an explanation as to why McKissic got more carries? I was offering Henderson and Montgomery in a trade for Gibson last week and it was rejected. The two put up points and Gibson pooped the bed. I'm wondering if I ought to toss out that offer again.
They just released Peterson. Bell seems like more or less the same.Good question. TBH I'm worried about Le'veon coming in right now.
Why would they do that?Good question. TBH I'm worried about Le'veon coming in right now.
Gibson’s offensive snap percentage was 56% compared to 50% for McKissic. Only the 2nd time he has out snapped McKissic. Gibson hasn’t locked the job down just yet.So was Gibson's toe injury an explanation as to why McKissic got more carries? Antonio Gibson (toe) was upgraded to "full" in Thursday's practice.
If it ever was, Gibson's status is no longer in doubt for Sunday's game against the Giants. J.D. McKissic has revived for 13 receptions over the past two weeks, but Alex Smith's Week 5 checkdown-a-thon had something to do with that. For his part, Gibson has set new career highs in receptions each of the past two weeks. It's been baby steps, but Gibson keeps taking steps forward as an RB2.

Antonio Gibson rushed nine times for 30 yards in Washington's Week 6 loss to the Giants, adding four catches for 25 yards.
Gibson was relegated to committee back duties once again this week. His nine carries were only one more than J.D. McKissic, who also saw more targets than Gibson. Kyle Allen's propensity to dump the ball off generated 12 running back targets for Washington but Gibson saw less than half of them. He ceded an additional three carries to Peyton Barber. Gibson will need to see a serious uptick in his role as a pass-catcher or runner if he's going to break out as a rookie. He currently projects as nothing more than an RB3 in PPR leagues. Gibson and the Football Team face off against Dallas next Sunday.

Why wouldnt you take a look at project players this year? They aren't going anywhere in the next 2 years. This is a multiyear rebuildMaybe this should be a lesson to other teams that if you have a massively incomplete roster you shouldn’t draft project players in the first three rounds.
Huh. You think Washington should not have drafted Gibson?Maybe this should be a lesson to other teams that if you have a massively incomplete roster you shouldn’t draft project players in the first three rounds.

So you guys are really going to defend this? This is the worst team in the league. Jacksonville got a RB as a UDFA. KC just got Bell off the scrap heap for practically nothing and TB did the same with Fournette. Absolutely terrible pick to this point if you have no weapons and you’re having him split touches with JD McKissic. 4.78 yards per touch for a guy you’re not even sure can make it as a RB. Terrible pick by a terrible team with a terrible FO. Reaffirms an old lesson to myself as well, stay away from trash teams no matter how intriguing the prospect is.Huh. You think Washington should not have drafted Gibson?
I would say taking a RB early when a team still has many other holes to fill is putting the cart before the horse. But using a 3rd round pick on a guy you want to run 50% of your offense through doesn't seem like mismanagement of resources.
Maybe your point is more about the project player?
They didn't have to cut Peterson if they didn't think Gibson was ready to play. In fact it seems like they cut Peterson so that they could have Ginson play more. Obviously he needs experience, I don't know if sitting behind Peterson would have helped him develop. Possibly the opposite.
Every pick is a decision about proven ability vs potential ability and I think NFL teams really focus on potential and what they think the players can become in their scheme.
I don't think Washington would have made any progress with Peterson because they couldnt run their offense the way they want to with a player like him. The Gibson and Kyle Allen moves tell me they are trying to run their scheme and build some continuity with that. The whole team is a project right now.
I’m a Washington fan and believe me, from within the fanbase you aren’t alone. I think Gibson grows into an exciting player, but yeah given where we are there were much more urgent holes that could have been addressed. I think it was a pure BPA situation since they’re rebuilding, and they loved him, big time. But it was a deep and talented draft and no, I didn’t expect them to come out of the 3rd round with a RB prospect of all things. Especially because Guice was still a thing at that time, although they had much more intel about what a screw-up he was turning out to be than anyone outside the building. Most fans would have preferred them to use a less premium resource on the RB position if they wanted one, period. But I do think he’ll grow into a good player if he stays healthy, and they have a ton of cap space and draft picks to build the team the way Rivera envisions this coming offseason. So you guys are really going to defend this? So your point is more about the cost of acquisition being too high?So you guys are really going to defend this? This is the worst team in the league. Jacksonville got a RB as a UDFA. You think pulling a 23 year old QB after four games and saying they “have a window” suggests they were thinking about losing? I don’t hate Rivera but the cast of characters around him (Turner/Del Rio) I’m pretty sure they had the arrogance to walk in and think they could compete. Then they saw the East was trash and thought Kyle Allen could win them games. The whole thing screams a total lack of patience and understanding about their team. They relegated their best LB from last year, Cole Holcomb, to inactive or special teams play so that 29 year old journeyman Kevin Pierre-Louis could play. I don’t want any young QB going here. Not Lawrence or Fields. I don’t think the coaching staff has a realistic vision of what they have and I don’t think the FO is anywhere near ready to build the necessary team around them.I see the issue as something that is very common in basketball as well. If you don't give promising young players a little extra patience to make mistakes then it can be very difficult for those players to push through growing pains and realize their true potential.
It looked as if Rivera and WFT were ready to do that with Gibson and Rivera even seemed to be saying all the right things, like he understood that what they're asking of from Gibson is going to take time to fully achieve but the last two games or so don't seem indicative of that mindset.
The kid really flashes when you watch but then he'll make a mental error or read his blockers incorrectly.
Many guys would be pulled from games for those kinda mistakes but the more experience you have, the more you can expect from a player. And conversely, the less you have the less you can expect. And the more you should be prepared to forgive.
If they can give the kid 15+ touches and a lion's share of work for multiple games in a row, I think they'll find what they're looking for.
But it's really strange to a see a team that is clearly not in win-now mode having such a lack of patience with a young, promising player.
Oof. You don't say.Already regretting my decision to drop him for Melvin Gordon.
Had a pretty bad drop unfortunately, there’s a lot of room for growth in his receiving game for sureWFT in a walk, Gibson with a heck of a day rushing and for fantasy. 128 total rushing yards for himself. I don't think he caught a pass.
Antonio Gibson (shoulder) missed Wednesday's practice ahead of Week 10's game against the Lions.
This is a new injury for Gibson, and potentially one factor that led him to play on just 46 percent of the team's snaps against the Giants, compared to J.D. McKissic's 83 percent. Gamescript was also a factor, as Gibson has just one third down touch all season, and Scott Turner clearly trusts McKissic in the passing game as Alex Smith's outlet. We now search for great ground game matchups for Gibson and Sunday is one on paper versus the Lions. It would be a shame if he missed it, as there might not be many left.

Totally agree. Next season he is going to a very good RB.Gibson with a nice game. Looked good, too. For one, he's hard to get on the ground. Two, he eats up defensive angles.
Such a high, high ceiling considering he's hardly tapped into his receiving upside
I believe Gibson will eventually be a FF stud (maybe a monster), especially as Washington's offense improves.
He's still learning the RB position. It seems he gets better every week. He's only a rookie.Having watched the game, I didn't feel good about what I saw. I plan to sell off these 2 TD's in hopes others didn't see it too.
My point is he kind of lucked into the 2 TD's. JD still seeing a lot of looks. Don't get me wrong, I am using him as my #2, I just don't have a lot of confidence. He's still learning the RB position. It seems he gets better every week. He's only a rookie.
