RB Carlos Hyde, JAC (2 Viewers)

Augusta Chronicle; STATESBORO, Ga. — Georgia Southern’s prized stable of running backs have been surprisingly quiet through the first two games of the season. The trio of senior Matt Breida, junior LA Ramsby and sophomore Wesley Fields combined for nine 100-yard rushing performances in 2015, but none of them ran for more than 100 yards against Savannah State or South Alabama.

None of them have a problem with it, either.

“It doesn’t matter who runs for 100 yards, as long as we win,” Ramsby said. ....

It all comes down to who the defense wants to key on, Ramsby said, and all the preseason hype has surrounded him, Breida and Fields. The difference with this year’s Georgia Southern offense is if defenses sell out to stop the running backs, it can make them pay with other weapons.

“I feel like a lot of teams have tried to stop us first,” Ramsby said. “The backfield is the cornerstone of our team, but we’ve got two athletic quarterbacks and good receivers. We’ve got a good line. We’re starting to spread the ball around a lot more, so that’s good for our offense to take the attention off the backfield. I’m looking forward to more games down the road, developing our offense a little better and scoring more points.”......

“It’s going to be pretty tough when you’ve got three good backs,” Fields said. “As long as we’re getting positive yards and helping the team, I think things will be pretty good.

“We’re trying to be a better offense and be as effective in the passing game as we are in the rushing game.”......
Thanks for the response.

This doesn't really answer my question however. It tells me that they have been spreading the ball around and that teams have been focused on stopping the running game during the first two weeks of the 2016 season, but what about the rest of the season?

My question was what strengths does Breida have that the coach did not play to?

Just looking at his college stats, Breida was a good RB his first two seasons then was well below average. He played in 12 games. Was he playing through injury?

Rushing Receiving Scrimmage
Year School Conf Class Pos G Att Yds Avg TD Rec Yds Avg TD Plays Yds Avg TD
2014 Georgia Southern Sun Belt SO RB 12 171 1485 8.7 17 8 97 12.1 1 179 1582 8.8 18
*2015 Georgia Southern Sun Belt JR RB 13 203 1609 7.9 17 3 6 2.0 0 206 1615 7.8 17
2016 Georgia Southern Sun Belt SR RB 12 168 646 3.8 3 11 53 4.8 2 179 699 3.9 5
Career Georgia Southern 542 3740 6.9 37 22 156 7.1 3 564 3896 6.9 40

He went from averaging about 8 yards per carry to 3.8 that is a huge decline in effectiveness and understandable for his opportunity to be reduced when he isn't delivering.

Whats more is that every other player on Georgia Southern was more effective than Breida on a per touch basis with exception of Lebaron Anthony who only had 7 opportunities for the year.

Incidentally I have watched some of Breidas games from 2015 but I could find nothing to watch of his from 2016 as I suppose it was deemed not worth watching. Thus my questions for you who has seen those games. What happened?

Carlos Hyde has played in just 34 of 48 games in his brief 3-yr NFL career, griding out a ho-hum career average of  just 4.3 yards per carry and a dismal 16.6 recs/yr, playing in an offense ( Shanahan's ) that is predicated on ZBS and RB's having hands made of glue catching everything in sight. Hyde is a TERRIBLE fit for this offense..

last year, in his best season as an NFL player  - under Chip Kelly's supposedly good offense,  Hyde played in just 13 games and scored just 6 TDs,and missed rushing for 1000 yards - he STILL hasn't rushed for over 1000 yards in his career..he's allergic to TDs, proven true the fact the he has scored just 13 TDs in 3 years, a lousy 4.3 TD/yr avg.

we have people argung over who is right, who said what, bla bla bla..

Hyde sucks I just don't see any other way to put it..you want to argue over a 6th-7th round draft pick? you can't find a better WR or TE in the 6th or 7th? Hyde is as poor a play as there ever is or ever was in Fantasy Football, Trent Richardson excluded of course..

I mean really folks, why are we having a discussion about a bordeline backup RB who was a starter simply because they had nothing else to throw out there..??

there's nothing to see with Hyde, let someone else be silly enough to draft him
Hyde scored 9td last year, 25% of the 49ers offense. which is a higher percentage than devonta Freeman, leveon Bell, Jordan Howard, or Jay ajayi, and in the same ballpark as Demarco Murray, Melvin Gordon, among others.

If you had Hyde on your team last year, most likely you wouldn't mind having him again this year (at the right price of course, but still willing to draft).

And I bet that Hyde ends the year with more fantasy points than Lynch.

PUT IT ON THE BOARD!!

Grant Cohn bashed not only Hyde but Garcon and Bowman. These three players may be the cornerstone of the team this year. Hyde does have injury concerns but it was reported that he took all the first team snaps. Obviously, it will become quite clear during training camp if he's on the outs.

I've actually got a similar type wager/argument (no money involved, just bragging rights I guess) in my 10 team dynasty league.  As Lynch was a free agent at the end of the year, he was eligible to be drafted with a rookie pick - and was drafted with the last pick in the first round, #10.  Since another owner said he'd have a better season this year than Hyde, then ergo Hyde isn't worth a first round rookie pick.  I guess age means nothing in dynasty anymore?

In the end someone will be right and someone will be wrong who the hell knows based on all this he said she said crap

John Lynch: Carlos Hyde 'looks tremendous'

49ers GM John Lynch praised Carlos Hyde on Thursday.

Hyde weighed in at 228 pounds, his lightest weight since high school. "Carlos Hyde looks tremendous," Lynch gushed. "He's really dedicated himself." It's a new tact from the 49ers, who spent much of the offseason openly questioning Hyde's fit in new coach Kyle Shanahan's system. Things have gotten so murky that NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal passed along on a recent podcast that Hyde could be a surprise release. For now, the 49ers have decided to play nice. Buttering Hyde up and eliciting a strong camp and preseason would make Hyde a more attractive trade target.

As a Raider fan, I hope Lynch has a better season than Hyde but I would love for the Raiders to somehow end up with Hyde also.  Hyde is a good, big RB which is exactly what the Raiders need to go along with their COP twins.

It happens every year.  All the camp chatter is just that...chatter.  Its meaningless.

According to Hyde, San Francisco’s new offense is a perfect fit for his skill set.

“It’s outside zone, but it’s downhill,” Hyde said, “and I’m a downhill back.”

NFL analyst, five-time Pro Bowler and soon-to-be Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson recently predicted Hyde to have a monster 2017 season with 1,300 rushing yards and double-digit touchdowns.

Can we just all agree that we have no idea who will be the lead back and wait until training camp?  The "news" that's coming out about Hyde is just reporter speculation because there's no real news to discuss.
I think we have a pretty good idea.   We may end up being wrong, but if we had no idea then Hyde wouldn't be going 9 rounds ahead of Williams and 17 rounds ahead of Breida in drafts right now.

John Lynch was asked an open-ended question: “Has any player stood out who is in great shape?”

The San Francisco 49ers general manager name-dropped Carlos Hyde.

“Carlos Hyde looks tremendous,” Lynch said. “He’s really dedicated himself.”

The unprompted praise came during a press conference featuring Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. Hyde met with media shortly after and confirmed that his summer has been spent preparing for training camp. Players officially reported to the SAP Performance Facility on Thursday, but Hyde had already been at 49ers HQ.

Rather than return home to Florida, the running back stayed in the Bay Area for daily workouts with 49ers strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright.

“I didn’t feel like I could get the type of training that I got from Ray anywhere else,” Hyde said.

Hyde weighed in on Thursday at 228. It will be the first time he starts an NFL season under 230 pounds.

“This is the lightest I’ve been since high school,” Hyde said. “I’m in the best shape of my life right now.”

The running back is coming off of his best professional season. Hyde ran for 988 yards, six touchdowns and added three touchdown receptions in 2016. He’s now tasked with learning Shanahan’s system and winning the starting job for a third straight year.

"I want to be the No. 1 rusher in the league,” Hyde said. “I feel like I have the opportunity to do that in this scheme."

This is the final season on Hyde’s rookie contract and could be a pivotal year for the young running back. He’ll have ample opportunity to impress the coaching staff and secure his role over the next month.

I always love it when a reporter is willing to go out on a limb, use their acute acumen, and think outside the box when they observe things that many of us don't get a chance to.

Except when Matt Maiocco says Hyde will have to compete for his job.
Well here is what Matt Maiocco said today in exerts from his NBC blog:

--Rookie linebacker Reuben Foster was beaten badly in one-on-one pass coverage drills against Matt Breida, Carlos Hyde, Logan Paulsen and Tim Hightower.

But once 11-on-11 began, Foster had an interception returned for a TD on Nick Mullens' pass intended for Bruce Ellington. It was Foster’s second pick-six in three days of practices.

“I guess the ball’s got a thing for me,” he said. “I don’t have a thing for the ball.”

--Hyde had a good showing during one-on-one drills, beating Foster and NaVorro Bowman in single coverage.

In my youth I dabbled in Sports journalism and it was easy to learn back then that writers had their favorites along with their not so favorites who they will slant one way or the other in articles.  The Bay area does not like Hyde for some reason in my observations beyond accurate reporting.

I want to agree but the o line and other 5 players on the field aren't good enough to make that a realistic goal.

I have no idea where to draft this guy - but find myself wanting to take him over Gillislee, Abdullah, Powell, Coleman, Ingram, etc

Easily.  Hyde has chance to be the bellcow.  The others you listed are all in RBBC.  Hyde may have a lower floor, but a way higher upside than the group you listed.

Tim Hightower took the first rep at running back at Monday's training camp practice.

It was reported over the weekend that Hightower looked "most comfortable" in coach Kyle Shanahan's outside-zone scheme, which isn't surprising after Hightower played for Shanahan in D.C. Perhaps the staff was rewarding Hightower for his strong first couple days of camp. Carlos Hyde was second up at running back Monday but proceeded to fumble on a pitch play. This position battle is one of the most fascinating of summer. Jul 31 - 6:56 PM

This micro-analysis of every play in practice is getting ridiculous.

....and the Shanahanigans begin.

What exactly is Rotoworld's "agenda"?
My guess is to stir the pot for clicks. I get the feeling they have temps writing for them who have the player they're reporting on on their "competitive" re-draft team when they write their take below the actual news.

What exactly is Rotoworld's "agenda"?
They adopt a view and perpetuate it with their 'reporting' - if that's what you want to call it. You don't go there for impartial information. It should be renamed: confirmationbiasworld.com

If this player ever gets a shot with a new team, he will shine. I will not draft him while he is stuck in  a no win situation playing for a team that has made an embarrassing fall from grace. I hope he gets a chance somewhere else. Have always been a fan.

he started last year, haven't seen a depth chart or anything to indicate he isn't the starter. I don't know which depth charts are official but every one I've seen (including here) lists him as the starter. The 49ers don't appear to have a depth chart updated on their site. I really think a bunch of people took late stabs at Hightower, Williams, and even Breida and are hoping. Hyde isn't awesome but he is better than those guys. The only real concern (a major one) to me is him staying healthy

What exactly is Rotoworld's "agenda"?
They do not have an "agenda" but they certainly have certain bias and will spin news to help support those biases. The blurbs that go with the news clip are often not reflective as to what was actually said in the article they were taking their news clip from.

There are guys they clearly like and guys they clearly do not. If a guy is on the "do not" list they certainly hammer that point home as often as possible and spin any negative news that they can.

yep, the scribes love to pile on the hate in the Bay area for Hyde.  I will find it hard to believe 31 year old Hightower is going to be the top dog or even the 3rd dog.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco says rookie Joe Williams has gotten off to a "slow start" at 49ers camp.

It's allowed Carlos Hyde to reemerge as the favorite to start, and Tim Hightower to grab a hold of No. 2 running back duties. Early practice reviews on Williams have been mixed to poor. Maiocco writes Williams "is still gaining familiarity with the system," and "must do a better job of securing the football." Practice reports indicate Williams has been fumbling early in camp.
