RB Carlos Hyde, JAC (1 Viewer)

I knew Hyde was going to have a breakout year.  Team right ahead of me took him in our draft.
I still question his ability to play a full season - he tends to rack up the nagging injuries. Missed a couple snaps with the hip last night.

But yeah - he's been fun to watch so far. He definitely appears to be a key part of what Shanahan is trying to build.'

Yeah I agree here, he was in a lot of pain and tried coming out a few times.  I'm hoping this continues.

The big thing is the 49ers have to stay in games at least for the first 3 quarters.  Anything more than two scores and Breida gets most passing down work.

This was a concern of mine as well, but it hasn't been the case so far.

If Hyde is losing passing down work to Breida, I don't follow the 49er's,  he might be a good candidate to sell high after the Redskin game. The 49er's have what seems to be a bad schedule for him after that. Either games against stout run defenses or potential blow outs.

Why do you think this? Hyde has at least 3 catches in all three games this season on 6, 6 & 4 targets. Breida seems like a CoP/breather back at best. I don't see him getting meaningful snaps in anything but the biggest blowouts.

They were down 20 to the Panthers for most of the 2nd half, Hyde had 6 receptions in that game (including 3 on their final drive) vs. 0 for Breida.

I don't think he is losing any PT to Breida for the foreseeable future.

Breida is definitely worth keeping an eye on because he is the only other RB on the roster, a strong endorsement for a rookie from Shanahan. But, after three weeks we know this is clearly Hyde's show.

The third string guy got carries when Hyde was out but fumbled which helps.

The FB, not even going to attempt to spell Kyle's last name also got banged up who is a pass catching FB.

I'm a little concerned starting Hyde this weekend since he's banged up against a tough defense.  My best alternative is Cohen who plays tonight, so I can't wait the week out to see how Hyde is doing

Start him with confidence.

Or don't, it's up to you.

I'm playing Cohen as my RB2 and putting Hyde at flex so I have a little wiggle room just in case. I'm not really worried though.

Game time decision and a 4pm start.  I thought for sure he'd be ready with ten days rest.  He left the Rams game, came back in and left again, ultimately coming back a quarter later.  Seems like pain tolerance is an issue.

I think I'm going to have to plug in Ingram for the 9:30am game rather than wait for Hyde status at 4pm and risk a 0.

Smallwood is my only other late game option. Think I gotta roll the dice with Abdullah @ a tough Min D.
Smallwood and Abdullah seem close to even no? Think in that case might be worth the gamble-depending on what news comes out in the am...

I have Blount as a backup playing at the same time. Right now Hyde is in. I’m glad I get that luxury. Otherwise if you have a decent backup, then use them.

Yeah I do actually find Smallwood intriguing and Abdullah has not been anything special so far this season, or in his career truly. Plus the Chargers represent an easier match up on paper.

However we know nothing about how Smallwood will be used or how long his leash will be. He is unlikely to be a factor at the goal line (also a knock on Abdullah) or how much volume he will get in the passing game. He also has a legitimate X-factor behind him in Clement. Finally, and this is just my opinion but I think the Chargers are better than their record suggests and this could be a tough game for Phi in general although I don't want to get too far into potential game script analysis.

Abdullah OTOH looks like a safe bet for 17 touches (2 targets), and he is not a liability in the passing game if anything happens to Riddick (not a stretch to imagine). He may not get goal line looks but D.Washington is out (I think) and he hasn't been completely ignored in the red zone. Abdullah also looks like the Lions most complete back and he has shown a little explosiveness in the past, not a ton but it is only his third season btw. His usage has also been independent of game script so far. Leading, trailing etc he still gets his volume.

The biggest argument in favor of Smallwood, and it is a significant one, is he has a vastly superior offensive line. But without any other information from actual game usage he really represents nothing more than a WTF roll of the dice. We cannot say with any certainty that Smallwood has greater upside.

Abdullah vs Smallwood looks like a classic volume play vs the shiny unknown.

I may change my mind before AM kickoff but, right now, Abdullah just feels like the safer play.

Is Breida a must start if Hyde sits?
No, not even close. Too many unknowns. Defenses will tighten up. Carlos Hyde changes offensive and defensive game plans, Breida does not. Without Hyde expect San Francisco to pass more but I wouldn't bump Hoyer much because without Hyde the offense will likely struggle. And expect Breida to be in a timeshare of some sort with Mostert.

At this point even if Hyde plays I expect him to be very limited and truly only in there as an attempt to keep the Cardinals defense honest.

Good posting here

I think I'm flexing Hogan over him in a couple places. Even though it looks like he's active, I don't like an injury that lingers for 10 days if I can avoid it.

Currently planning on Smallwood over Hyde, even if he plays. I agree with the poster above who said we got lucky last week, when he went out, and came back in to test, and was fine.  If the matchup were a little better, I might gamble on the clear upside, but I'm willing to gamble the other way on Smallwood.  I might change my mind, based on pre-game reporting about how he looks in warmups.

At this point it is either Brieda or Hyde for me.  So if active, I am rolling with Hyde.  Probably should have switched to Abdulla, but too late.

The Mercury News reports the 49ers could extend contract-year RB Carlos Hyde.

Hyde has been one of the bright spots for the 49ers, ranking inside the top-ten in yards (321), touchdowns (2) and averaging 4.9 YPC. His future was in question after Joe Williams (IR, ankle) was drafted, but he's proven to be a fit in Kyle Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme. Hyde has a checkered injury history and needs to show he can stay healthy before the 49ers extend him. He's likely to command Lamar Miller money (4 years, $26M).
