All I've seen is 3-year worth "more than $15M"... if it isn't much more than $15M, then it's probably similar to Latavius Murray's contract (given the increase in cap this year) which didn't stop the Vikings from drafting Cook last year. So Hyde's job might not be that safe. Kind of surprised he didn't get more, but I haven't seen any of the other contracts, either (Dion or Crowell). 

That is actually a bit more than I expected him to get. He was pretty bad in San Fran last year. He had his worst year as a runner, and despite the volume, was a huge liability in the passing game, where he led all RB's in drops, and was as bad a blocker as any RB in the league. That said, he's likely an upgrade from Crowell.

I would hope the Browns give Duke Johnson more work, going on year 3 of him being he best RB on the team. Split carries 50-50, with Duke in the passing game and Hyde a the goal line.

Well, I don't have Hyde anywhere. Just thought he had earned more. PFF said he was actually better as a runner last year*, but did note he was a liability in the passing game.

As for Duke... meh. He's a JAG. He wasn't even close to being the best back on the team in 2016 and merely benefited from situation last year.

I'm not sure the Browns take RB in round 1 like the Vikings, but I still think they take a shot on one at some point.

To be fair, that's also largely a factor of him being top 5 in targets for a RB.  Also, he had only 6 drops on 88 targets while teammate Breida had 5 on 36 - kinda speaks to the qualify of those "targets".  As a comparison, Jordan Howard had 5 drops on only 32 targets.

Agreed.  3 years of "more than 15m", when McKinnon who's replacing him in San Fran is getting 4 years $30m.

I'm surprised as well if in fact the 49ers paid more for McKinnon than what Hyde got. I don't follow the 49ers but they must have really soured on him because I view "Jet" as more of a do it all receiving back than a guy that can handle a lot of carries over an entire season.

He was a bad fit for the one cut zone blocking scheme stuff Shanahan does.  He's a much better fit for Cleveland.

As a 49ers fan I totally disagree with the 2nd part of that statement. Hyde picks a lane before the play develops and runs there regardless of whether that lane is open or not. Time after time I've seen him run right into a pile with little patience. Vision-wise he is pretty much the exact opposite of Bell.

I disagree completely.  Profootballfocus has him rated as the 8th best back in the league.  He often made 4 yards out of absolutely nothing.  I think he will be highly successful in cleveland.

Problem for me is that he also often made nothing out of 4 yards. I like Hyde as a runner, but his "predetermined" style runs did not jive with zone blocked schemes. If the browns run a lot of read options w/ Taylor in shotgun I can see Hyde doing well though... he seems like a much more patient runner in shotgun compared to being lined up in the backfield.

i don't disagree that the style wasn't the best for him last year but he still had a solid year.  

I think he does very well on the browns with an improved oline and scheme

I think the bigger worry is if they bring in someone else like a quality rookie in the first 3 rounds (never mind Barkley...that would be the death penalty for his value)...a 3 headed monster of Hyde-Duke-and a Jones/Michel/Chubb type of rookie would not help any of their value...

Fair point - I think their offense will be better, but I think Hyde's upside will still be capped by Duke. Also by Taylor as a very mobile QB.

I'm not sure why people aren't weighting the effect of playing in what will almost certainly be a new system installed by Haley. I like the new situation and he may just be a classic undervalue clean grab as a RB2.

For me, it's just looking at the variety of teams hungry for a lead (if not bell cow) RB and thinking: Was 3/$15 to probably be part of a committee in Cleveland really the best option for him? It felt like he had a chance to be on the verge of RB1 and instead will end up being valued about the same as last year. Maybe he still has that chance considering he was somewhat undervalued last year, but for right now I'm rather "meh" about it.

Carlos Hyde was listed as the Browns' first-team running back on the team's initial training camp depth chart.

Duke Johnson was Hyde's immediate backup while second-rounder Nick Chubb was listed as the third-string back. It's no surprise to see Hyde atop Cleveland's initial depth chart, though the rookie Chubb could push the veteran for snaps at some point. Johnson is locked in as the Browns' passing-down back.

Brown RB Carlos Hyde rushed 9 times for 64 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason game versus the Bills.

After playing just three snaps in the preseason opener a week ago, Hyde got four possessions with the first team offense. Hyde set the tone early, rushing five times for 41 yards on the opening drive of the game, capped off with a 4-yard touchdown run. Five of his nine carries went for five or more yards, including a 26-yard jaunt in which he bullied Jordan Poyer to the ground with a stiff arm. Hyde is clearly the starting running back for the Browns entering the season, providing a discounted fantasy option for owners looking for RB help in the middle of the draft.

Carlos Hyde rushed seven times for 45 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Eagles.

Hyde lost five yards on his lone reception. 33 of Hyde's yards came on a first quarter rumble where he schooled CB Jalen Mills, but big plays are a part of Hyde's game when he's healthy. "When he's healthy" the obvious and ever-present caveat for a back who finishes the preseason with a 17/108/1/6.35 slash line. Hyde is a risky pick on the RB2/3 borderline. In addition to his injury history, he has Duke Johnson monopolizing passing downs and rookie Nick Chubb waiting in the wings.

Unfortunately I think you’re right. I’ve noticed Chubb is going pretty late tho so if you can sit on him for a while he could pay off the 2nd half.

I feel like Chubb got minimal time with the 1s for a few reasons. 

First of which, is that the Browns want to start the season w the experienced cats leading things off.  

Mayfield and Chubb will both own their roles in short order.

This sounds like DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry on so many levels it's unbelievable. 

- top veteran rb added in the offseason

- stud rookie rb added in the second round

- young quarterback needs protection

- good offensive line

- team was a cellar dweller the last couple years

- coaching change to a better running offense

- veteran rb starts and looks really good

- rookie rb behind him flashes but doesn't look quite as good yet 

- former running back who was more of a pass catcher than runner is moving more towards the slot

I am not confident in hyde as my rb2 and would want a quality rb3 behind him, but I think he has similar upside to Murray two years ago.  Bargain at his current adp.

I know some will argue with regard to the merits of handcuffing but I view Hyde a lot like Jamaal Williams in redraft this year.  If you're going to commit to taking Hyde, you gotta commit to taking Chubb later.  Same goes with Williams and Jones.

Except that Duke is still going to work on a majority of 3rd downs and the hurry up. A lot of Murray's value stemmed from his involvement in the pass game. I think Hyde could definitely be a bargain in standard but he's not even remotely on my radar in ppr.
