D'Ernest Johnson rushed 22 times for 146 yards and a touchdown in the Browns' Week 7 win over the Broncos, adding two receptions for 22 additional yards.
Making an emergency start in place of the injured 1A/1B tandem of Nick Chubb (calf) and Kareem Hunt (calf), Johnson rushed for the fifth most yards of any player in the NFL this season. Infamous for his 4.81 40-yard dash at his USF Pro Day in 2018, Johnson looked nothing like the sluggish back that number would suggest. He did provide the power you would hope for from a 5-foot-10, 208-pound bruiser, dragging tacklers and pushing the pile all night long against a Broncos defense that entered the evening allowing the fourth fewest rushing yards in the league. Johnson appeared to have a second score on a 3rd-and-2 from the Broncos' 15-yard line with 1:13 remaining, but A. He went down on purpose instead of going into the end zone to run clock. B. Had the run called back by an illegal motion penalty. Unfazed, Johnson iced the game one play later where he gained eight on a 3rd-and-7. Also wildly successful when forced into 2020 spot duty, Johnson is officially A Thing in the NFL's most talented backfield. Of course, he will immediately revert to No. 2 status if Chubb can return for Week 8 against the Steelers. Hunt will miss at least two more games on injured reserve, however, and we know the No. 2 back provides standalone value in this backfield.
