RB Tony Pollard, TEN (2 Viewers)

Looks like Zeke is going to be released today.

As a Pollard owner, I'll enjoy the next month before Bijan is drafted. Maybe less if they sign Sanders.
Only the Cowboys would franchise tag a RB and then use a first round pick at RB.
When Jerry falls in love, he falls hard. And in Bijan's case, it's love thy neighbor.
They've gotten smarter over the years. I highly doubt he drafts rb
If they draft him at 26, I don't think anyone would say he's reaching. In fact, probably a steal. Top 5 like Zeke would indeed be questionable.
I know but you don't franchise an rb and then draft a guy that should be the lead back from day 1. I know, I know, but no way this happens.

Maybe for the talent, but not for the position. Doesn't Dallas have more pressing needs they should fill? But by all means, I'd love to see the Cowboys spend their 1st round pick on another RB.

Fair point, but Pollard is on a 1-year deal unless he signs longer term and sounds like the Cowboys want to run more than ever. Just spitballing though - who knows.

At #26, you're probably looking for BPA and he's probably it if he's there. That's a great luxury pick for them, but what do I know.

With the market so soft for running backs, tagging Pollard at $10M+ doesn't seem like a wise decision in hindsight. Could have let him hit the market, make him happy with a big bag AND have a lower cap number this year to be able to pursue that dream WR some of the fans seem to want.

I think it was a good move actually considering their reinforced commitment to the run game. Clearly they love what Pollard brings to the table, he's making an enormous amount more than most of the other free agents, and it's only a one year commitment if he falters as a lead back. Plus, clearly they were ready to move on from Zeke.

Ya in hindsight maybe. The rb market is weird tho. It seems like everyone is on super cheap deals or really expensive deals. Even Sanders got 6.25/yr which is crazy to me. When you compare Pollard to that, pollard seems like a good deal. When you compare him to some of the 1-3 million type players, it seems not. I think they should give him a shot at 20+ touches a game though and if he can handle it then extend him. I just hope whoever they bring in in fa doesn't get a huge chunk of carries. Who is even left tho to bring in?

Complementary guys like Devin Singletary, Damien Harris in play since NE signed a back, Foreman still there. Hunt doesn't seem to have a big market right now. Still guys out there to pair with him, but I'm not sure how much $$$ whether Franchise Tag or dead cap with Zeke they will continue to invest at the position. Seems drafting a running back possibly to hedge for future play if they don't bring back Pollard on a long term deal could be the play. They tagged Schultz last year and I don't think they even offered him a deal this year, bc in part, they drafted 2 guys to replace him last year. Could be the same formula moving forward.

I think a rookie would likely be the best case scenario for pollard from a fantasy perspective.

I thought Malik Davis looked pretty good in his limited work. I could see Dallas just having him be the #2 and competing with some day 3 rookie.

Good call - was going to say the same thing. I think they like him and he may be the backup/spell guy. But if a Hunt/Harris/Singletary is on the cheap, always a possibility they get added to the fold like anywhere else.

Nobody thinks Zeke will be back for a much lower salary? I do. It's not like he was bad last year. Knows the offense and Jerry loves him.

I think he's most likely to return to Dallas, no on will love him like Jerry. Chargers could be interesting with Kellen connection and Zeke's pass protection skills.

Chargers are also interesting - could still be an effective short yardage guy to take some of the pounding away from Ekeler.

No! That’s Bijan’s job!

Eke is getting traded and the chargers are drafting Bijan. And that’s that.

:oldunsure:

I don’t

"That will never change"

Not sure how reading this changes my mind. Obviously he can go somewhere else, but I'm guessing he has a nice crib in the area and he knows the system and Jerry loves him.
They need a backup. Who better than a guy who can still get it done and knows the system IF the price is right?

I do not think the Bengals would bring him in for a look but the fan in me would love to see him in Cincy. I would not do it as a GM but as a fan, I would love to see him back in Ohio. Just not Cleveland. LOL.

Truth be told maybe love to see him in Cleveland as well. Bring Zeke home!! ;)

Why do you think this? Zeke always clouded the situation, I think he's an every down back.

Dallas coaches themselves reiterating he's a twelve to fifteen touch a game guy and anything more than that is asking him to get hurt. You can agree with that or not, but that's what they said and was directly from their mouths. So either they were lying or they're going to find another committee back in Dallas.

They don't view Pollard as an everydown back
Why do you think this? Zeke always clouded the situation, I think he's an every down back.

A lot of small comments over the years(I live in the area and have owned Pollard on multiple dynasty teams since he came into the league so I've been paying attention) combined with the way they use him.

I can't look up all that stuff and a lot of it was on radio or TV but here are some quotes from their RB coach, Skip Peete who took a unilateral job with Tampa. You are welcome to say or think that because Peete just left none of this means anything going forward. These comments were from last season and article linked. He talks a bit about he feels strongly about having a 2 back attack(maybe take note Rachaad White investors) and then adds some comments specifically about Pollard. Again I've heard comments like simlar echoed over the years by the likes of Stephen Jones, just can't find it for you:

[Pollard] played a total of 30 plays, and I think that's his max - as far as total play count - because then the juice doesn't become the same and he's not as quick, not as fast," said Peete. "When he got that long run on third-and-1, soon as he got to the sideline he said, 'Coach, I'm done. Done for the game. I've got no more.'
"Tony's obviously a very talented runner and good all-around back, but some guys are race cars. Some guys are high-quality, expensive sedans and those sedans can go for a long distance at a very high rate, whereas race cars go very fast and quick and run out of gas."

Elliott is the "very physical, downhill runner", according to Peete, that hammers opponents into being tenderized for Pollard's cuts, and the latter is why the Cowboys understand Pollard will routinely average more yards per carry - seeing as it's Elliott doing the heavy lifting to set his counterpart up for the home run play.
"[Halfbacks like Pollard] are always going to have a bigger average, and make more explosive plays but, at the end of the day, when you get into certain games, the race car can't handle that punishment because they get worn down. I think you need both [types]," said Peete.
Ya Peete is gone, as is Moore. MM in charge now and he has vocally said he wants to run run run run run. Pollard already was a great fantasy back, and now now Zeke to steal goalline work.
When Zeke went out , they gave him 15 touches that game. Next game gave him 28 touches and he played great with it. Game after that, 21 touches and he played great there too. I think its going to be more like 20-25 this year coming up, which is pretty close to 'every down back' as it gets in the league.

@menobrown @rockaction
How many carries (just carries) per game do you think he gets this year? He averaged 18.5 in the games Zeke missed, about how many do you think he will avg this year?

EDT: Zeke had 254 carries last year. Have to think about 50 of those minimum go to Pollard?

I think around fifteen-eighteen. That would be my guess. I'm certainly not hanging my hat on it. Depends upon who they bring in to the RB position. Then I'll have a better idea.

MM in charge now and he has vocally said he wants to run run run run run
This is an exaggeration of what MM said
So he said he wants to run run run run?
He said he wants to run the ball more. Have more ball control. Not light up the scoreboard. Run the ball.

Last year Dallas was 7th in the NFL in Rush attempts per game. I could see them easily being top 5 this year. Even if you give 20% of Zekes carries to Pollard, that puts Pollard at top 10 levels.

Last year Pollard had the 17th most RUSH attempts in the NFL. And that was while Zeke was getting the 10th most attempts. With Zeke gone, I see zero reason Pollard won't be top 10 (at minimum) in the NFL in number of carries but people still want to say he's 'not an every down back'.

Don’t appear to be a needy team to me. They’ve covered a lot of spots. Feel like they’re open to taking best player. Maybe RB?

@BryanBroaddus What is the Cowboys biggest draft need after the Cooks trade?

DT, OG, RB,

They have one good RB and he has a broken leg.

LOL at QB. Obnoxious take imo. Almost EVERY team in the league would upgrade their QB if possible. Its not easy and bringing in a rookie to play the most scrutinized position in ALL OF TEAM SPORTS isnt so easy. Dak is good enough to win, like 100% of Superbowl winning QBs, he needs help.

Just hope Pollard heals and comes back 100%
I like the move by Dallas bringing in Cooks, they needed 2nd WR threat and he should fill the bill.

Not worried about RBs not even on the roster yet, Pollard will see plenty of touches assuming he's healthy and willing to play on a franchise tag

I don’t see Dak winning a Super Bowl. Actually, the biggest need is a real head coach. Dak won’t win with dough boy Mike McCarthty leading the charge.

And yes — it’s a deliberately provocative take.

You want provocative?

The Dallas Cowboys should be working on an extension for Dak so they don't have to pay 2024/2025 prices.
He only has this season and next, it gets worse when there is only 1 year left on their deals. Also counts $60m against the cap in '24 as things stand right now.
Dak will be 31 next season, time to plan ahead.

With the market so soft for running backs, tagging Pollard at $10M+ doesn't seem like a wise decision in hindsight. Could have let him hit the market, make him happy with a big bag AND have a lower cap number this year to be able to pursue that dream WR some of the fans seem to want.

Last year - Pollard gets 1800 yards behind the best line in football with the 2nd best running QB handing him the ball. And again, I don’t say this as a huge fan of Pollard.

I’m admit that I’m not overly excited about Mike McCarthy but he has proven he can win a Super Bowl. I know this because he won the Super Bowl. He did it with a complete maniac at QB and about 40 players on IR.

Oh i see. I misread that. I'd say Pollard gets about the same, Jalen doesn't throw to the running back, not quite yet. But I can't see him getting more than 250 carries to get there in this hypothetical.

Last year Dallas was 7th in the NFL in Rush attempts per game. I could see them easily being top 5 this year
Do you know what the difference between 7th and 5th was last year?

7th and 2nd?

How about 7th and 12th?
Top 10 teams in rushing attempts last year

Falcons 559
Bears 558
Eagles 544
Commanders 538
Browns 532
Cowboys 531
Ravens 526
Giants 520
49ers 504
Steelers 500

Not to speak for Deamon, but Dallas was one of the most run-heavy teams in the league last year, correct? Sixth most rushing attempts from what I saw. Then McCarthy complained they didn't run enough when giving an explanation as to why they let their OC go. So I think its reasonable to say they may be in the top 5 next season.

I'm thinking McCarthy wanted to say "Didn't want to pass when we did in some situations".
That comment opens up a can of worms.
This.

He's just talking about playing better complementary football, helping out the defense more.

As a few have pointed out Dallas ran the ball a ton last year. In GB McCarthy called the plays most of his tenure and they were 24th in rushing attempts. Yes he had two great QB's but that's not close to being as run heavy as the Dallas offense has been with Moore calling the plays.

"Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up," McCarthy said (via the Dallas Morning News), "but I want him to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense. I think when you're a coordinator, you know but you're in charge of the offense. Being a head coach and being a play caller, you're a little more in tune with (everything). I don't desire to be the No. 1 offense in the league. I want to be the No. 1 team in the league with the number of wins and a championship. And if we've got to give up some production and take care of the ball a little better to get that, then that's what we'll do because we have a really good defense."

Bolded added for emphasis. Doesn't sound to me like he wants to pass more and run less. He may be trying to protect his QB, who led the league in INTs. Just my opinion.

Right, and it would seem that would entail running more and passing less than what they did in previous years.

I mean, it doesn't sound like he wants to pass more.
