RB Zach Evans, LAR (1 Viewer)

I was referring to the entire season. Not just the game last night. Judkins has looked a lot better overall.

Evans coming back to play 2nd fiddle to him wouldn't make sense.

Judkins has been great but Evans is averaging close to a yard a carry more than him. That includes the multiple games that he would get 5 -7 carries and then be sat because he didn't look right. He was also more effective as a receiver. My main concern is that Evans may not ever be a guy that gets 200+ carries a season because he is ineffective when he is dinged. That said, just the potential makes him a top 3 RB in this stacked class. It's interesting that the Ole Miss season went down the toilet at the same time that Evans started having health issues. Really not trying to take anything away from Judkins I like him a lot, he just doesn't have the skill set that Evans does if he can put it all together.

it’s weird that no mock I’ve seen in the last few weeks has Evans as even a 3rd round selection.

I suspect after the combine that might change.

A lot of people have 4-5 RB's ahead of him. I'm on the Evans train early.
Really hoping someone in my league takes him 5-6-7
1QB leagues - 1 Robinson, 2 JSN, 3 Gibbs, 4 Tucker, 5 Addison 6 Johnston 7 Mayer
8 Evans 9 Charbonnet 10 K Miller 11 Downs 12 Young

SF - Put Young 2 and Stroud 3 and insert Levis somewhere around 8 or 9 and adjust everyone else accordingly.

Yeah - much has changed since I posted that. I haven’t seen an NFL mock draft in several weeks with Evans as even a 3rd round pick.

That could change with the combine.

I was posting fantasy, not NFL mock, but NFL draft capital matters for fantasy.

That was my point, yeah. To be FF relevant IMO they need to be at least a day 2 pick.

There are outliers of course, but it’s more rare.

Always interesting to see which prospects have or don't have momentum...feels like he definitely doesn't have momentum right now.

Agreed - but it’s definitely something that can turn on a dime after the combine.

Of all the positions, I believe this is most true for RBs. Agility, strength, speed - Evans can help his draft stock a lot with a good showing. He might not, but he could.

I got to admit I was high on him entering the year, thought he looked good and still fairly high on him but starting to wonder if he really ever had as much momentum as I thought?

I'm going to reference a pre-season college football magazine which I know seems a little silly. But it's a really good one, Phil Steele's which does not come out until July and he has NFL draft rankings in it I sometimes like to look back for reference, mainly to see who dropped off and then try and find out why to find a hidden gem. The fact he has Evans as RB18 before the season even started is the reason why I am questioning if he had much momentum at any point.

BTW-he had your guy McIntosh at 3.

Quite a few of the DEVY sites have had Evans pretty highly regarded for a couple of years now.

Only this year he’s generally tumbled in their rankings, so I don’t think it was just you.

FWIW, DynastyLeagueFootball still has him as the RB3 of this class, but maybe they haven’t updated their rankings yet. IMO, Tucker, Charbonet, Achane have all pretty clearly passed him by.

Achane is 5’8” 185 lbs. Name the last RB that size to ever amount to anything in fantasy. If any, how many?

I would take Tucker over him, but probably not Charbonnet.

I don’t personally like him, nor would I draft him. I agree he’s too small/track star-ish.

But my point was he’s getting more buzz than Evans and has passed him up in FF circles as a prospect.

Not by me he hasn’t. Kind of ridiculous IMO if that is true. I’ve seen hot takes on Achane and I snicker on it.

Momentum changes quickly this time of the year. Evans' momentum is understandably low after what would have to be considered a disappointing season, being passed on the depth chart by a true freshman and failing to display versatility in the passing game. However, there are a number of things to really like about Evans' game too, and if he impresses in workouts, he could really shift that momentum swing. NFL teams tend to have short memories, and it is all about what have you done lately.

There are a few RB prospects who have really seen their momentum slip lately, and mostly based on growing narratives highlighting the shortcomings of their games (Evans, Bigsby, Miller). The draft season is full of momentum swings; weigh-ins and workout numbers will understandably shake things up quite a bit, but sometimes a single tweet criticizing an aspect of a player's game can have an impact on how mock drafters rank a player, affecting their momentum.

I think it is very much commonsense that there will another momentum shift due to the combine…always is.

I absolutely agree. Things change rapidly, but right now Evans' stock is slipping, while Tucker, Charbonnet and Achane are all seeing their stock moving upwards.

I have Evans as my current RB6 for dynasty PPR purposes, in large part based on his lack of receiving production, but a solid Combine performance, especially in individual drills, would move him up. Bijan and Gibbs seem locked into their rankings, but the rest of the class is in constant flux.

1.01 RB1 (Tier 1) Bijan Robinson 6-0 220 Texas (Round 1)
1.02 RB2 (Tier 2) Jahmyr Gibbs 5-11 200 Alabama (Round 1)
1.06 RB3 (Tier 3) Sean Tucker 5-10 205 Syracuse (Round 3) 🔺
1.07 RB4 (Tier 3) Zach Charbonnet 6-1 220 UCLA (Round 2) 🔺
1.09 RB5 (Tier 3) Devon Achane 5-9 185 Texas A&M (Round 3) 🔺
2.01 RB6 (Tier 3) Zach Evans 6-0 205 Ole Miss (Round 3) 🔻
2.05 RB7 (Tier 4) Tank Bigsby 6-0 213 Auburn (Round 4) 🔻
2.12 RB8 (Tier 4) Chase Brown 5-11 205 Illinois (Round 4) 🔺
3.02 RB9 (Tier 4) Kendre Miller 6-0 220 TCU (Round 6) 🔻
3.03 RB10 (Tier 4) Kenny McIntosh 6-1 210 Georgia (Round 4) 🔺

Same - I see it on the YouTube mocks, in comments sections of same.

I think the dude is destined to be a COP, which for PPR can be a decent asset. But Evans is the kind of dude who might impress with his strength/speed combo at the combine and creep up NFL team draft boards.

And even if Evans doesn’t, I’m still more a fan of his size than I am of Achane. The current hype is a little silly.

1.07 RB4 (Tier 3) Zach Charbonnet 6-1 220 UCLA (Round 2) 🔺
This one intrigues me more and more - I really like his game, and he’s a powerhouse.

I’m interested to see where he goes. I imagine him as a feature back in MIA and see a lot of potential.

I suspect he’ll get drafted as a banger between the tackles, which isn’t as exciting, but could still be productive.

He’s a guy a lot of folks scoffed at last year but I think he’s opened some eyes.

Achane is the guy who fits the Dolphins

Imagine trying to defend all that speed with tyreek waddle and achane. It's southeast San Francisco

I'm not an Achane honk but CJ2K weighed in a 195 at the combine. If he weighs in around the same, he'll get interest from teams that need speed. The NFL is a copycat league and everyone wants the kind of offense the 49ers chiefs and Dolphins have been running. V

Might even be the Dolphins. I’d be a buyer at that landing spot, depending where his ADP lands in rookie drafts.

185, not 195

Two minute plus breakdown centered on Evans at the 47 minute mark. This is one of what will be many Ray Garvin pre-draft mock drafts. Evans is selected at the 2.10 of a rookie superflex, #9 RB off the board. Garvin cites Jeremiah, McShay, and Kiper as draft analysts having him outside of their top 10 RBs.

My rookie draft is in August, so I have no dog in this fight. If anything, it will be a major disappointment if the NFL speaks and guys like Evans and Tucker aren't deemed worthy of the #7 overall rookie selection in a 1 QB. I was definitely counting on one of these guys backfilling my aging rb core with young talent, or pushing a big-time WR talent down to me.

If Dane Brugler's mock proves anything close to accurate and the #3 RB off the board is Achane iate in the second round, that's a really tough spot. I would be extremely hesitant to burn a middle 1st rounder on a back of that size, but I'm definitely not discounting the possibility in today's RB landscape if it's in the ideal offense. If Evans or Tucker (or perhaps Charbonnet or Miller), go in the middle of the 3rd, then it becomes really murky. I might yield a half-round of draft capital for prototypical size and a decent landing spot.

It wouldn't be ideal if 3 RBs go in the first 2 rounds, and 2 of them are little backs, that is for sure. But I try to keep in mind that the NFL will wait longer to draft RBs if it's a deep class more than in a shallow class.
Example- Dobbins was as good of a prospect as Etienne or Najee coming out, but there was a big tier of RBs behind that tier that teams liked. Compare that to 2021 where there was a huge drop from RB3 to RB4. That factored into Najee and Etienne going round 1, while Dobbins went at the end of round 2 the prior year.
Given this class is deep, I wouldn't be surprised if most RBs go round 3-4, even if they are similar prospects to the ones that went a round earlier the last couple years.

That said, 7 looks like a tough spot in non-SF right now. I have it in one league, and I am not super excited about taking a RB there since it doesn't feel like there is a ton of separation from RBs 3-5 to RBs 7-9. I am hoping one my top 2 WRs fall there, or that I can move up or back.

I agree

Agree with you on 1.7, and probably even 1.6 or 1.5 depending on how you feel about some of the WRs. Feels like a bad spot in January given the plateau of RB options that seems to extend well into the 2nd round, not to mention at some point the top QBs and Mayer are viable in that range.

However, I think you're going to have two to three combine warriors from that group that get favorable draft capital on a great offense. The training camp hype machine takes over, and I think it's possible that the #7 or #8 overall looks like a great spot to pick up one of the last jewels if your draft isn't until August. That's wishful thinking, but it's plausible. It's also possible that the NFL gives a verdict on guys like Addison or Johnston that isn't as favorable as what a lot of people are thinking now.

That said, 7 looks like a tough spot in non-SF right now.
Who's at 5 and 6?
I have a clear top 4.
Yeah, I probably should have said "mid 1st" instead of 7.
I am very confident in top 3 (Bijan, JSN, Gibbs)
I like WRs 2-3, but have concerns (Johnston and Addison). As of right now I'm still probably taking those guys over RBs.
I assume at least one of the next tier of RBs will test well, go high enough, and land on a good offense to separate themselves from the pack (not always the case, but it seems like good odds).

It can change, but right now it feels like a good year for multiple early 2nds over a mid 1st if I am going for RBs.

I don't get this current thinking that there's a bunch of good running backs who will be around in the second. I'm in a 1 qb non-ppr where I expect the top 5+ picks to be rbs.

I think a lot of the draftniks are doing superflex mocks that push these rbs down and the other mockers see his and are hoping they can get a charbonnet in the second somehow. Wait until hype season. It will change.

Charbonnet is on a 1st round rookie draft trajectory in 1QB at this point. Any 2nd round rookie rb is going to have some warts, or you're getting a landing spot where you're waiting a year or more for a real shot at a big role.

2nd round could be a guy like Evans or Tucker falling if the NFL affirms some of the fears that are floating around. I might not be doing cartwheels if the NFL draft capital isn't there, but I would still be pretty excited to get such a talent profile at that price.

If Miller doesn't make the 1st, his highlights sure look interesting to me (he passes the eye test for me more than Charbonnet, but that's contrary to all other analysis that I'm hearing).

Bigsby is a big name that played in a tough spot. I wouldn't feel bad about walking away with him in the 2nd. Starting to hear some buzz on Chase Brown and Abanikanda that could make them an option. McIntosh, Roschon Johnson, McBride, Gray could also make a push for 2nd/late 2nd/early 3rd option. There are a few more names beyond that that could also climb.

I think both things can be true and this is how the 2017 draft class was which I keep saying reminds me a great deal of this class. RB's made 4 of the top 5 picks that year in almost all of my leagues but second round and later was still fairly loaded.

We have this conversation every year. The SF and ppr guys just don't get it.

Matt Miller @NFLDraftScout

I am a really big fan of Zach Evans' talent. Have to vet the off-field.
Excuse me, but if memory serves the only off-field stuff was the recruitment fiasco. What have I missed and how serious is it?
Good call flagging that comment @JohnnyU as this was the only off-field issue that I could find:

SEC target 5-star RB Zach Evans sent home from Texas state championship game over reported rules violation
