READ IT / KILL IT: My Christmas Book (UPDATED with results in Post 18 - THANKS, FBG brothers!) (1 Viewer)

Captain Fantastic

Footballguy
Greetings, FBG'ers.

So as many of you know, I took the plunge last year to become a full-time writer. Has been an incredible journey thus far (pursuing a dream = awesome...but accompanied by the not-so-awesome part of zero guaranteed income while the kids still seem to want to eat three meals a day...way selfish of them).  <_<

Released my first novel - the suspense/thriller Hostile Takeover - last fall to nice praise from critics and readers (very flattering) and pretty decent sales for an author no one has ever heard of.

A few weeks ago, the follow-up thriller Second Son was released. A fun experience because there was some anticipation among an established reader base who were anxious for the second book (also flattering).

HOWEVER, "sales that are good for an unknown writer" is NOT the same as "sales that will eventually pay for my kids college education" (or even "sales that will allow me to buy my kids an overpriced soda when we go to the movie theater"). To really make a living at writing, you need to be a NY Times bestseller (and keep books on that list year after year).

Sooooo...one thing I'm attempting is an old marketing staple known as "giving a free sample and praying the customer likes it enough to buy something else with real dollars".

It's covert advertising that isn't particularly covert since I'm telling you about it here...but FBG brothers hide nothing from each other (and we don't shake hands, cause brothers gotta hug).  :suds:

The first book I ever published was The Three Christmases of William Spencer. It's a family-friendly book with a Chicken Soup for the Soul'ish vibe. Fine for readers of all ages but geared more toward parents and grandparents. The book shares a warmhearted message about happiness and the meaning of Christmas.

In the spirit of the season (and the spirit of that marketing attempt mentioned earlier), the digital book is offered FREE until this Sunday, Dec 18th. Available on Kindle or the Kindle App on your iPad, computer, etc. Just go to the product page on Amazon and click the "Buy Now" button (you'll be "buying" it for zero dollars).

Being that this is the FBG Free-for-All, please feel free to read it then return to this thread and kill it. And feel free to say the author is funny-looking and should be ashamed for self-promotion in a sacred space like these boards. It's all true.

But if you read it and like it, I would ask that you please share the "free promotion" with someone in your life who might enjoy a warmhearted story this holiday. And, if possible, please share it with them prior to the expiration on Sunday 12/18 (after that, they'll have to pay real money for the book...tragic).

Thank you and merry Christmas one and all. Now roast away. I deserve it.  :scared:

I can vouch for Hostile Takeover. A good, quick, fun read. I'm not a family-friendly, heartwarmish type of guy but perhaps I'll check out the Xmas book. Continued good luck Capt. Fantastic!

Done.  Went ahead and bought Hostile Takeover too - good price, might as well support a FBG.
Thanks, heckmanm. Hope you enjoy them both (let me know what you think!).  :thanks:

And thanks for the testimonial Swing51! (Your check is in the mail.)

And if anyone REALLY wants to be a champion and help a fellow FBG brother out...

Please feel free to "share" this Facebook post about the free promotion for Three Christmases. Your FB friends are an audience I'd never be able to reach on my own (and who knows? Maybe they'll enjoy the book and be glad you let them know about it).

You. Are. Awesome.  :tebow: :thanks:  :thanks: :hifive:

Quick callback of this post with a THANK YOU shout-out to my FBG brothers.  :thanks:

During the promotion with Amazon, The Three Christmases of William Spencer did really well, hitting #1 in Amazon's Kindle Store for "Fiction & Literature" short reads, making #5 in Holiday books and ALMOST cracking the Top 50 overall in the Kindle Free List (I think the highest it got was #58...which is quite respectable).

Ended up just shy of 6,000 downloads (how many people actually READ it after downloading it is an unknown) but it translated to a number of positive reviews on Amazon and Goodreads (very flattering). Fingers crossed that people who enjoyed it are inclined to take a chance on another book by that unknown author:thumbup:

And sure, I used various promotional sites and email blast services that target subscribers looking for free Kindle books, but I know the real foundation of the success came from a grassroots campaign run by fellow FBG board members. So I say "thank you" to all who lent a hand:hifive:

Next step will be to do a similar campaign for my thriller novel Hostile Takeover in February. Won't do free for that one but will target a 99-cent promotion for a few days and utilize similar promotional vehicles. Subject to debate on whether "free" or "ultra-cheap" is best, but I think when it comes to full-length novels (as opposed to a short book like Three Christmases), there is probably a combination of: (1) if someone is interested, being just as likely to spend 99-cents on a book as they are to download it free, BUT THEN (2) thinking someone is probably more likely to actually READ the book if they PAID (even something cheap) as opposed to just downloading and forgetting.

I could be completely wrong in my reasoning, but that's how it seems to my limited marketing mind.  :nerd:

Anyway, thanks again FBG-nation. Much love and many wishes for a happy 2017 to you all!  :suds:
