Anybody have experience with the bodybuilding culture? No snark, just genuinely curious about folks who sculpt their bodies and then are judged by how perfectly formed their body is - just a WAG here, but I imagine that might include some folks whose very nature is "LOOK AT ME."
I've only known two professional bodybuilders.
My good friend Xavier went to Morehouse. People who went to an HBCU are, in general, pretty proud of that; same is true for Ivy League grads. Most can be low key about it. But guys who are Morehouse alumni are very much like Harvard grads. They will find a way to name check that into the conversation within 5-10 minutes of being introduced. X has a pretty lucrative training business these days, mostly working with NYC athletes and minor celebrities. He is a pretty humble guy most of the time and doesn't bring a lot of attention to his accomplishments, but his wife has bragged to me about titles he has won. His IG feed definitely gives off main character vibes, though - maybe that's part of his brand building, IDK. He doesn't pass up too many opportunities to let the world know which famous person he is currently shaping and molding.
The other bodybuilder I know is my nephew Jacob. He lives in Houston, which is (apparently) something of a mecca for bodybuilders and fitness influencers. Like Xavier he is humble guy, which I attribute - for both of them - to being believers who have a core foundational belief to not make too much of yourself. But his social media....oh man, it is....how do I say this....it's a lot more revelatory than just about anyone I know. He has several accounts and I've muted the "business accounts." Dude, why would you....I cannot unsee that. Good kid, love his fitness trainer gf, he's doing well in his career. But it's a world that I'm just not familiar with and I just smh sometimes. He is fun to walk behind, though - his shoulders are seemingly 3x as large as his waist, and the man has quads and calves that look like AJ Dillon.
John Brown is a character. AFAIK (haven't watched the show yet) he seems like a good dude. Definitely has a chip on his shoulder, and he is very opinionated about nutrition and fitness. He is not obnoxious IME, but yeah, he's no wallflower.
Man I gotta get around to watching this soon....
