Receiver on Netflix (1 Viewer)

I need to watch this, and soon. I get Amon Ra's frustration at the draft process. Granted, he was not the biggest guy. He was the #1 HS recruit in his class on Rivals and #2 on 247. He was quite productive as a sophomore and was off to a really good Junior season during covid year. The fact that he is THAT mad about the draft, and with how hard he works, he is a true feel good story. I did not draft him as a rookie, but I did pay to trade for him and glad I did.

Whatever motivates you. Jordan and Brady continued to take any perceived slight as a challenge well after having already successful careers.

Amon RA may need to invent some new ones soon as that draft is diminishing in the rear view mirror.

He keeps the list in his locker next to his list of goals.

That fire isn’t going out.
I'm not saying his fire going out. Just don't know how motivational it'll be to reel off D'Wayne Eskridge's name after he's been out of the league for 5 years.

Do we think Tom Brady won the 2020 Super Bowl because he was still pissed about being a 6th round pick 20 years beforehand?

I suspect it’ll be even more motivational. Like “yeah, I’m still here MFer! 5 years after you!”

Do we think Tom Brady won the 2020 Super Bowl because he was still pissed about being a 6th round pick 20 years beforehand?
Yes, absolutely I do. Tom Brady is one of the saltiest, most grudge holding SOBs in the planet.

The dude picked football over his supermodel wife and kids. I bet he went straight home and put on the video of the draft, when they called his name.

By the way George Kittle is my new favorite player. The Kittle Chubbies party bus? Epic.
Everything about Kittle is the best.

He’s been my fav player for a long, long time. When he’s on the field singing and dancing, and looks around with legit disgust that he’s the only one, “what?! It’s a great song!”

Lmao

Did you somehow miss Michael Jordan’s retirement speech? Invited a guy from high school they cut him for just to trash him one more time.

Every time the Lions play one of those guy’s teams he still brings it up. “I didn’t notice Dyami Brown out there, did he get any offensive snaps? One? Wow…82nd pick, huh.”

:lmao:

He is simultaneously the nicest guy in the world and more petty than anyone you know.

Glad he’s ours. That incredible work ethic he has pushes his teammates. Trash talks anyone but always in a good natured way (he’s actually an introvert.) The best kind of leadership. “Follow me, do what I do.”

2 episodes in. Interesting to see these athletes as humans instead of just athletes on the field. From a strictly mental standpont Amon is absolutely everything your want your cornerstone player to be. 100% football. Disciplined. Not at the same level, but has a Jerry Rice Jr Jr feel to him. It's one of the huge intangibles that drives success. Some athletes have it and some athletes don't. See Jamarcus Russell. Amon is gonna be in the hall of fame down the road. It's in his DNA. Don't bash me. I'm old. Maybe out of touch. Maybe I'm just that Army vet, old man telling kids to get of his lawn. Here it is. Although on a level above nearly all physically, Justin Jefferson is a little much for me. Guess we all wired differently. Adams seemed like a cool dude. Interesting how we have the impression of people from watching them on tv, yet really have zero clue on who they are. Adams as a competitor is waaay different then Adams as a husband and father. Came away really impressed with Adams. Kittle is awesome. Deebo. Love the story on the nickname. Craig!!!

I watched the 2nd episode last night. Man, Davonte Adams went through it last year.

About halfway through it.

This and the Giants off-season Hard Knocks has been terrific content when I needed it the most.

Is it a coincidence that all 5 players featured suffered an injury, and all fairly early in the year or just how it normally goes? They always say no player is 100% by the end of the year but watching this has me thinking I wanted to start looking at recent injury history of WR’s vs RB’s and seeing if the pendulum has swung on what we consider the less injury risk position.

Anyone else almost halfway expect to see a Taco Bell inside Davante Adams house?

Haven’t started watching yet, but I’m happy to see Amon-Ra getting some flowers. Especially after his 1-day reign as the highest paid WR in the league (they can never take that away from you, bro.)

Great family. As everyone knows, their father was 3-time Mr World, 2-time Mr Universe; all 3 sons were 4-star WR recruits. Equinameous (Notre Dame) at Servite H.S., Osiris (Stanford) and Amon-Ra (USC) at crosstown rival Mater Dei Catholic. MaxPreps ranked them the 22nd best high school football rivalry in the country. Competition runs in the family lol.

Their football conference, Trinity League, has an amazing level of D-1 Talent. For the fall 2023 season, High School Football America rated it the toughest league in the nation, with the top two nationally ranked teams and five out of the six ranked the top 300. In 2021, three of the six programs had been ranked in the top 10 in the country, with five in the top 200. Mater Dei has been crowned USA Today National Champs 5x, and it’s the only h.s. which can claim three Heisman Trophy winners (John Huarte, Matt Leinart, Bryce Young.)

The boys started lifting when they were 8, 6 & 5. At first, John Brown would only let them use plastic pvc pipe. After they proved they had mastered good technique were they allowed to start using weights under his supervision.

Think about what it must have been like for ARSB. He was always the runt. EQ grew to be 6’5”, Osiris is 6’2”, Amon-Ra (maybe 6’0”) was always a year or three behind. He was the serious one, even as a little boy. Always trying to prove he could keep up.

Their German mother, Miriam (Steyer) Brown, met her husband at a fitness convention in Germany in the late 80s. She spoke only German to her boys at home and via text. She also enrolled them in a French Immersion school for 6 months when were in grade school. All 3 boys are trilingual and spent their summers playing soccer in Germany.

That all sounds pretty intense but my impression of the Brown’s is they laid a strong foundation for the boys, but they seem very normal and loving. Like just well rounded folks, definitely focused but also fun loving. You would think with that kind of spartan discipline, the old man might be the rigid domineering type, but he seems like a genuinely good dude (from afar.)

St famously catches 201 balls from the jugs machine every day. I mean Every. Day. since high school. He used to invite USC teammates over to workout with pops and his brothers….well, no one ever came back. They could not get over how hard they go.

Off the field, away from the facilities, he is super engaging with Lions fans. I think you have to go back to Steve Yzerman or Al Kaline to find a Detroit athlete who is more revered.

BUT that’s my perspective from 635 miles away; I could be off-base. Goff, Hutch, and Jamo are up there in the beloved department.

Just watched the first ep and it's great. Only thing I would've added is a lesser known/lower tier receiver, kind of like how they had Mariota on Quarterback. Just to give a different perspective.

That being said, the guys they chose are all great. ARSB is one of my favorite current players and it's great to see more about him.

AGREE!

just finished E2 and I see stark differences in ASRB and JJ about how they view things.
ASRB = Mental toughness and preparation with humility compared to Bling Boy JJ.

I just started episode 4, and here are my initial thoughts
Kittle - This guy enjoys life as you should. An awesome person to have in the locker room and on the field. Seems like he quickly comes to console teammates when they need it, and uses his humor to make others around him happy. Oh, and, Harrison hit him in the ****!
Samuel - I hate the Niners, so it was shocking to start liking Kittle so much, and now I like Deebo too. Dammit!
St. Brown - Best work ethic and frame of mind. Tough parents for sure, as if he were bred to be an athlete. I would've crumbled in that household and turned to drugs, but he took the challenge and has excelled. I moved him up in my rankings simply by watching 3 episodes.
Jefferson - Still hasn't grown up. He's got everything you need physically, and seems like he takes responsibility for his actions. But he talks about himself in the 3rd person too much. You aren't two people, Jets. Just say me.
Adams - He plays 8 years with Rodgers, then is happy to reconnect with Carr, only to see him leave after 1 year. Now he's stuck on a rebuilding team as he is playing his last years. Someone just needs to tell him that 2023/2023 was the first time in his career he went back to back with no missed games. He needs to get his frustrations in check a bit.

really enjoyed this....wish there were more behind the scenes shows like this....maybe not, I might not leave the house....

Adams such a competitive yet laid back guy....had to be a tough season for him...kind of felt sorry for him at the end.....not making the playoffs and just have your season "end" is not something I think we really think about too much for all these players....has to be really tough for the ultra elite/competitive group...

Kittle....such a loveable different duck...

Jefferson.....meh....didn't really get to see too much of subtance behind the scenes here....little disappointed....missing that much time sucks

Deebo.....for what we think of such a physical specimen, he seems to get bit by the injury bug quite a bit....one of those guys where you are talking to the TV after almost every play... "get up please"...plays hard and wants to win

Brown....best part of the show IMO....such a dawg....and why I love this show....Brown is the epitome of what you want your top level/elite talent WR to be.....he has the same talent as the top guys but almost zero of the diva that comes along with the other top wideouts....got to see some things we may have never known really if not for the show....I will say my least favorite part of this show was his father seemingly wanting to inject himself in the production and make some of the show "about him"...bravado and bragging and kind of pounding his own chest was a little over the top and off putting....we get it dude....you want some credit for what became of your son's....we just don't need to be reminded of it every time the camera is on....

I hear you.. but Dad was a two-time Mr. Universe and clearly a big part of what makes his sons "wired differently". Maybe as an average dude I just console myself with the notion that in addition to being blessed with physical gifts, exceptional people are just wired differently than the rest of us. When I watched them, I saw a family "culture" on display where "good enough" was never good enough. Maybe they'll need extensive therapy some day but that "culture" is clearly a big contributor to how ARSB became the player he is.

I wonder if Dad secretly likes Amon better than Equanimeous because he turned out to be a better player? I bet he does.

Possibly, hence the (half joking) reference to therapy. It's a cliche but success often comes at a price and I was definitely getting the sense that being dad's favourite was an "open competition".

Yeah, when you talked about being wired differently, you are absolutely correct. In all seriousness, super competitive parents have a very hard time hiding which child is their favorite, and it's usually the "winner".

Zero idea on that, sometimes parents love the one's who need more love the most.

But one thing I noticed is that Amon-Ra's dad loves busting Amon-Ra's GF(Brooklyn) chops. I"m only halfway through and have seen him do it a few times, he seems to have a pretty good sense of humor. When she got popcorn sprayed in her head at the end of the Bears vs Lions game he was downright giddy. And later when he insisted on showing her his "dance" move in roller skates she was pretty tired of him. Seems like a good relationship.

I see nothing that would make me think anyone in the family would need therapy one day. Noting about this is like a Marinovich situation or something like that. Just two involved parents.

I get culture he was brought up in and that may have contributed to his success…but my point was dad was going out if his way to say look at me….he wanted to make sure everybody gave him flowers or something…it was just a little off putting for me the way he felt the need to say look at me and insert himself…maybe it’s just me…

Anybody have experience with the bodybuilding culture? No snark, just genuinely curious about folks who sculpt their bodies and then are judged by how perfectly formed their body is - just a WAG here, but I imagine that might include some folks whose very nature is "LOOK AT ME."

I've only known two professional bodybuilders.

My good friend Xavier went to Morehouse. People who went to an HBCU are, in general, pretty proud of that; same is true for Ivy League grads. Most can be low key about it. But guys who are Morehouse alumni are very much like Harvard grads. They will find a way to name check that into the conversation within 5-10 minutes of being introduced. X has a pretty lucrative training business these days, mostly working with NYC athletes and minor celebrities. He is a pretty humble guy most of the time and doesn't bring a lot of attention to his accomplishments, but his wife has bragged to me about titles he has won. His IG feed definitely gives off main character vibes, though - maybe that's part of his brand building, IDK. He doesn't pass up too many opportunities to let the world know which famous person he is currently shaping and molding.

The other bodybuilder I know is my nephew Jacob. He lives in Houston, which is (apparently) something of a mecca for bodybuilders and fitness influencers. Like Xavier he is humble guy, which I attribute - for both of them - to being believers who have a core foundational belief to not make too much of yourself. But his social media....oh man, it is....how do I say this....it's a lot more revelatory than just about anyone I know. He has several accounts and I've muted the "business accounts." Dude, why would you....I cannot unsee that. Good kid, love his fitness trainer gf, he's doing well in his career. But it's a world that I'm just not familiar with and I just smh sometimes. He is fun to walk behind, though - his shoulders are seemingly 3x as large as his waist, and the man has quads and calves that look like AJ Dillon.

John Brown is a character. AFAIK (haven't watched the show yet) he seems like a good dude. Definitely has a chip on his shoulder, and he is very opinionated about nutrition and fitness. He is not obnoxious IME, but yeah, he's no wallflower.

Man I gotta get around to watching this soon....

My take as well. Seem like good people.

John Brown has a competitive persona which comes out in certain situations. It's a vestige of his former life as a world class athlete. I've seen enough quiet, contemplative interviews to realize that the persona is not the sum of all that he is - he is self-aware.

great post...thanks for sharing....I guess I just feel Brown's dad had his time.....this show was about Amon Ra.....and I know you can't tell the whole story without history and family....it's one thing to express how he was brought up and how that factored in...there is a way to do that and I think the show did an excellent job of that (when dad wasn't on camera).....it's another for dad to take seemingly every opportunity to tell us how great he was and inject himself almost to the point of wanting everybody to give HIM credit for what his son/s have done......and how things were "back in my day when I walked in the room"...felt like he almost couldn't help himself....and this was just in the few times the camera was on...

You can see why the Raiders struggle to become a factor. Cigar celebrations after beating terrible teams.

Commanders’ visitor locker rooms are terrible. Wow.

I'm 4 episodes in, and if I had to say which one is the worst teammate, it's Davante. Best teammate is easily Kittle.
Seconded

Agreed.

A whole lot of "I" talk and passive aggressive leadership from Davante.

davante seems ot be on a summer tour of trashing his teams/teammates and saying where he'd like to be playing.

lame.
Emmitt Smith once infamously said he felt like he was a diamond surrounded by trash. Davante may not be saying it, but he sure walks that walk.

Just finished this episode. I get it was a big game for a new coach but cigars did seem a little too much. Ha ha

On the 4th episode and I'm enjoying this more than the Giants Hard Knocks so far. Lots of characters for sure.

I would say that I bet Davante is a better teammate when his team is winning. Hard to judge the guy, who is one of the best to ever do it, while he's playing for a McDaniels team. The disfunction from the top in that situation just bleeds through everything else.

Just finished the series, and my thoughts on each player are pretty much the same as when I had finished just 3 episodes. Davante said he doesn't care about wins and losses, but cares about greatness. And he isn't talking about his team's greatness - just his own. He's the textbook definition of someone who would rather lose and look good rather than win and look bad. He's a locker room cancer, because he doesn't try to inspire his teammates - he only cares about himself. He is Rod Tidwell, before Rod learned what it was to be part of a team.

J Davante said he doesn't care about wins and losses, but cares about greatness.

just finished ep1 last night w the wife and when I heard him say this I knew he was just a terrible guy to have around.
whereas you have kittle saying 1catch for 1yd makes him happier than a pig in doodoo if they win

Episode 1 was way too much 49er for my enjoyment

hate those guys

ARSB been dating that girl for 9+ years....put a ring on it, she's a keeper
