The premise just seemed like it would be over the top violence without the substance of the backstory. Ultimately the backstory was stronger than all the action scenes imo. I guess I set the bar pretty low for most films these days.

Makes sense. The director and star of that did Another Round this past year which just about the best film of 2020 for me.
