Redraft turning into a Keeper (1 Viewer)

I've got a redraft league that has decided to turn into a 'keeper' league starting with this years draft. 12 team league, standard 5X5 roto. The twist here is that keepers can be 'kept' the following year by forgoing a pick 2 rds earlier each subsequent year.

For example, say I draft a guy in rd 12 this year, I can keep him for my 10th rd pick in 2010, keep him again in 2011 as my 8th rd pick and so on. Picks made in the first 2 rds of the initial draft cannot be kept.

Any ways to exploit (build a better team) with this type of system?

In football I only do redrafts & dynasties...so this quasi 'keeper' system has me wondering on how to approach things. Do I wanna draft BPA with the first few picks, or pick based on some strategy cause these players can't be kept anyways?

I have the 1.02 slot and am toying with taking 2 stud SP's at 2.11 & 3.02 (I have allways gone bats early in past redrafts).

I'm thinking I may be able to nab 2 of a group of guys like Lince, Sabathia, Santana & Halladay to anchor the squad in year 1, and draft a stable of guys like Liriano, Gallardo, Kershaw & Prince much later to keep for cheap for a few years. Am I fooling myself by thinking I can nab these types of arms in rds 12+?

" Liriano, Gallardo, Kershaw & Price much later to keep for cheap for a few years. Am I fooling myself by thinking I can nab these types of arms in rds 12+?"

YES these guys will ALL be gone in the first ten rounds (only exception might be price, but shouldn't be the case in a keeper league.

You really should NOT change the way to draft in year 1 - you want to win this year don't you? There is NO guarantee that if you try and let a guy slide he will be available later. Just draft the best team available and worry about keepers next year.

....and NO you should not draft two STUD SP with your second and third picks - your offense will never recover - remember that in a 12 team mixed the one thing in abundance on the free agent list is Pitchers

Thanks for the comments Hook. Yeah, I've never been a SP early guy. Allways gone bats early and often and done well. I guess I'm just hung up on the idea that the first 3 guys on my team will likely all be thrown back next year and how does that affect who I take this year? Still just BPA as allways?

I guess the reason I ask is this:

I have the 1.02 pick. I think it is likely I'll draft Reyes or Ramirez @ SS. My problem is in year 2, when we re-draft players I'll likely be drafting in the bottom few picks (1.08-1.12) as redraft order is based on reverse prior year finish. I'll have to let Ramirez or Reyes go, and will be forced to pick up a much lesser alternative like Jeter or what not who really isn't worth my year 2 1st or 2nd round pick to replace Reyes or Ramirez. How do I cover this?

.....you know there IS a place where I could answer ALL the questions (www.fantasybaseball.com sorry, for the commercial interruption)...................BUT you will look at a player later in the draft for your MI who will be a shortstop that you will be able to keep next year - he won't be Reyes or Hanley, but will be a keeper and a GOOD SS for next year - don't forget that whomever you take and the other one will both be back in the draft next year, so even if other teams have an earlier shot at them it means they have to let other good players fall to you - there are NO bad first round picks (might also depend on how many reserves you draft)
