Milwaukee sort of gets screwed again. Cinci has the 15th pick, so a second rounder it is, once again for Milwaukee.Another first round pick for the Crew (see Linebrink thread). Would have liked to have kept Coco, but also like seeing a high draft pick in the hands of Jack Z. and his scouts. The Mota acquisition helps a little, but who pitches the ninth now? Turnblow?
holy ####, another awful signing. Reds have got to be have one of the worst management of any of the teams
The money is ridiculous but the Reds have needed a top closer for years now. Ultimately I think its a solid move. Cordero is no stud and is certainly not worth 2nd best closer money but he is def a top 10 closer. Sometimes if you desperately need simething (and the Reds have needed a closer for years now) you gotta pay for it.holy ####, another awful signing. There are rumors that the Red Sox have offered Wood a 3 year deal at market value to do what they wanted Gagne to do last year.Teams are signing relievers to ridiculous contracts this year. Wonder how much some team is going to toss at Gagne and Wood.
You do realize that 4 years at that price is ridiculous, right?Mariano looking like a steal now...holy ####, another awful signing. Reds have got to be have one of the worst management of any of the teams![]()
I was thinking that if the Reds were going to pony up that kind of cheese, they would have offered it to Mariano first. THAT would have been an excellent signing, and would have signaled that the Reds wanted to put together a World Series type of team. Mariano would have electrified the fan base, while Cordero gets the "yeah, that was a good signing I guess....he's better than what we have" reaction. You do realize that 4 years at that price is ridiculous, right?Mariano looking like a steal now...holy ####, another awful signing. The 3 Yankee deals look like good value now compared to the Hunter and Cordero signings. The 2 Red Sox deals look like highway robbery. You do realize that 4 years at that price is ridiculous, right?Mariano looking like a steal now...holy ####, another awful signing. I agree with this and based on that, I think it is is not only a good signing but money well spent. From Paul DaughertyA Cordero signing isn't going to have people lining up at the ticket windows. But it speaks to the commitment of ownership to try to turn things around.
Trying to turn things around and turning things around are not the same.
But I think Cordero was the right guy to sign. The starting rotation beyond Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo remains a question.
The money the Reds are going to pay Cordero probably would not have gotten Kyle Lohse, and he went 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA.
Cordero should help the rotation a bit. With him closing, and David Weathers and Jared Burton in the seventh and eighth innings, the Reds will have some good, young arms - Bill Bray, Marcus McBeth and Jon Coutlangus - to pitch the sixth.
Matt Belisle and Homer Bailey will be much more effective if they don't have to pitch into the seventh to get a win.
That said, I'd still try to trade for a serviceable No. 3 starter.
But getting a closer like Cordero is a good start to the free-agent season.
I was thinking the Reds should have backed the money truck up two years ago to make an effort for Josh Beckett. It was a risk because no one knew if he was going to stink up the joint or just needed a change of scenary. It turns out the change did him pretty good.I have sort of thought the same thing about Dontrelle. He has been stuck on a lousy team where even when he had an ERA over 5.00 he was the stud of the rotation being asked to do more than he was capable of. Not suprising that his major drop off came at the same time Beckett left Florida. It seems to me if the Reds could squeeze him into the rotation somewhere after Harang and maybe before or after Arroyo then throw Bailey and Belisle out there they would be a contender. The Cordero signing suggests the Reds will not be hunting big-time starting pitching. Any gains there will be made from within. The Reds have money. They don't have that much.
We're reading that the Florida Marlins want two top prospects for Dontrelle Willis. The Reds would be nuts to part with Jay Bruce and (take your pick) Johnny Cueto, Drew Stubbs or Joey Votto for a guy who has had two down years in a row.
That said, they still have chips to play. Josh Hamilton and Ryan Freel top the list, and one of the young guns might be available if there were a match involving pitching. Would you trade Hamilton and Cueto for Willis?
Obviously, I dont speak for everyone, but as a Reds season ticket holder I'm more excited about Cordero than I would be about Rivera.I was thinking that if the Reds were going to pony up that kind of cheese, they would have offered it to Mariano first.
