Reds trade Griffey to White Sox (1 Viewer)

As a Reds fan, I was beyond excited to see him get here in 2000. What an up and down 8 years its been since.

If he accepts it...Here's to you Junior!

It's a big name, but I doubt it'll have too much an impact on the race. He's only got a 103 OPS+. As great as Griffey was, he's just not the same player anymore. Where is he going to play?

Konerko has been brutal this year and Swisher hasn't been great since moving from first after Paulie came back from the DL. Griffey should platoon with Anderson in Center while Konerko and Swisher platoon at first. I'm all for getting Konerko out of the line-up at this point.

Griffey also would help sub for Thome at DH. Obviously not the Griffey of old, but a big lefty bat in the line-up never hurts. What a completely different team to 05. No more small ball here, just mashers.

That's a bit of a fallacy about the '05 team. That team hit 200 home runs.

:lmao:

I was always hopeful that things could turn around for Griff here in Cinci. I was disapointed hen he was drafted by Seattle. I loved watching him there. I was estatic when they made the trade. Griffey took less money to come here. Once he started to get hurt, everything just fell apart from there. A majority of the fans turned bitter towards him, and he did the same in return. I always felt that he was treated unfairly. Seeing the smiling kid who played for the Mariners disapear was one of my sadder experiences as a Reds fan.

In the long run, this is a great move for the Reds, but it is extremely painful for me to watch. I truly wish things could have been different.

They also manufactured runs. I don't see much of that this year. If they hit homers they have a good shot of winning, if not, forget about it.

Wow...it's 7am and I just woke up to see this on ESPN News.

Last thing I expected to see, but tbh, I really hope it happens. Both for the Reds and for him. I'll be pulling for the White Sox if it does go thru...As a lifelong Reds fan, I wish he could have been healthy, but it is what it is, not his fault. That said, he was my favorite player growing up in the Pac NW, and I loved having him as a Red, but the Reds will be better served if/when he's gone. Pains me to say, but it is the truth.

Pretty damn cool that he hit a truly majestic, classic "Jr." HR yesterday in his last game as a Red too...

Do we have any realistic clue as to the return, if anything?

Just heard through the grapevine that Grif is on a plane to Chi-town. Let's hope he doesn't land in O'Hare, or else he will be turning right back around.

Rumor has it the deal includes CF Brian Anderson and reliever Nick Massett. It also may include Affedlt/Weathers going to Chitown too.

And yes, Dunn ---> TB makes a lot of sense for both teams. But the Reds are going to be hard pressed to replace his 40+HR's, 100+ RBI, and .385 OBP. It would truly all depend on the return. B.J. Upton and John Jaso?

Is that a good deal? That sounds terrible if you ask me....I guess the salary dump would be nice, but those guys are terrible.

You think the Rays are going to trade BJ Upton?? And you think Upton and Jaso for Dunn is a fair trade?!?

IMO, Adam Dunn is the most highly under-appreciated player in MLB. Everyone laments his SO's etc. But a .385 OBP is SICK and when you couple that with his power and RBI's, he's a prize. Granted his defense is below average, but to discount the offense this guy brings is really baffling. As to whether it's fair or not...the Reds do NOT have to move Dunn. They'd be perfectly happy, having unloaded Jr., moving Jay Bruce to his natural position in RF, finding a CF/leadoff hitter (they do have Chris Dickerson in the minors...while he's not the long-term answer, the Reds have all off season to fill that hole) and re-sight Dunn @ 4/65M and have him locked up in LF. So is it fair? Prob not, but if the Reds aren't bowled over, they simply shouldn't move Dunn. The guy I want most, in a totally unrelated trade is Teagarden from Texas. Offer them Homer Bailey and I'd be thrilled. The Reds are a blackhole @ Catcher.

I LOVE Adam Dunn -- maybe my favorite non-Tiger in baseball. But that still doesn't mean I'd trade Upton and Jaso for him. And I'd be pretty shocked if the Rays did.

Is this in the works or totally dreamt up?

Rumor is that Texas is trying to unload Baird and that the Fish and Cincy are both possibly interested, but imo, Laird isn't worth Bailey. Teagarden might be a bit of a reach, but Salty isn't. The Rangers have 4 catchers (with Ramierz (sp?) being the prized one)...it's just rumor at this point but...

Then so-be-it. The Reds don't need to trade him. Plain and simple. So the Reds do have a good bit of leverage here...they don't need to dump his contract, therefore, set the bar high or simply re-sign him.

Ken Rosenthal is also reporting that Junior has accepted.

Rumor now, and it's gaining momentum is that it's for 2B Danny Richar & RP Nick Masset.

oof
TBH, I expected a bag of balls back for Jr. Anything is a "+"...beats Brian Anderson...we have him already and his name is Corey Patterson  :If the Sox are on the hook for his buyout next season, this is a win for the Reds, imo.

I'm sure the Sox are on the hook for most, if not all of that.

Per ESPN, Sox/Reds splitting this year and the buyout next year.now that it's official, I'm still kinda sad today...boyhood idol gone....it's best for all concerned, but still a sad day.

Glad to hear they aren't throwing in Weathers or Affeldt. Maybe they can get another player/prospect for one of those guys before 4pm.

I'm all for unloading Weathers, but I think that Affedlt could really be a solid RP for the Reds next year:CocoBurtonBrayMajAffeldtRoenickeThat's the making of a pretty solid RP crew....

I like the deal. I don't expect much from Jr. but he could bring a little something to the clubhouse. And Konerko looks like he is done so he is decent insurance.

As much as some of his moves have backfired I respect that Kenny Williams always tries to make this team better. The legit pitchers (Harden, Sabathia) are long gone and we gave up nothing here. It would be dumb to move a Floyd or Danks to make a run with this team (we're not that good) but to make a minor move that could pay off, why not? If we somehow hang on and win this thing Guillen should be manager of the year.
