There have been 4 special elections since Trump has been in office.  For each one the Democrats have loudly proclaimed that the election will be a referendum on the Trump administration and its rejection by the American people.  This drumbeat is picked up and put forth ad naseum by the national media.

Then the apparently unthinkable happens, and the Dem loses in each case.  So my questions are:  

When do the Dems finally smarten up and stop putting forth this nonsensical strategy that has backfired each time they have tried it,

and when do these elections start getting put forth as a referendum on the Democrats rather than on Trump?

I think it depends how you look at it. If Democrats really are outperforming traditional expectations by as much as people say they are, saying it's a referendum may not be helping them, but it may indeed be a referendum that's obscuring things behind the W-L results.
