Surely, they won't have him playing special teams... Will they? I know he is great at it, but do they want a guy that is gonna have over $20,000,000 in guaranteed money playing on the suicide squad? Can we say Jason Sehorn?!

I will be a Bush owner here shortly, and personally, I hope he does return kicks and punts. Every opportunity for him to touch the ball is a plus in my book. He could take a couple back. Injury risk does not really concern me, how many kick returners suffer serious injury each year? Anyone know? Does not seem to be a significant issue.

Why wouldnt they use him as a KR or especially a PR?

Is the slightly elevated risk of injury for him not worth the big difference in field position he can create?

No use in buying a fine car if you are afraid to drive it because it might get dented.

I know he is great at it
Err....he wasn't ranked in the top 100 in the NCAA in '05 and wasn't the best KR on his team. At 17.61 yards per return, Bush was about 1.5 ypr behind #100. #1 Jonathan Stewart of Oregon almost doubled him at 33.67 ypr.As far as the Trojans go...

KICK RETURNS No. Yds Avg TD Long

Bush, Reggie 28 493 17.6 0 30

Reed, Desmond 5 194 38.8 0 51

Bing, Darnell 5 143 28.6 0 68

Ashton, Collin 1 17 17.0 0 17

Walker, John 1 40 40.0 0 40

Abbott, Jim 1 14 14.0 0 14

Maualuga, Rey 1 7 7.0 0 7

Ting, Ryan 1 21 21.0 0 21

Total.......... 43 929 21.6 0 68

Opponents...... 65 1370 21.1 0 92

Bush couldn't match his team avg or his opponent's avg. Reed more than doubled his avg. Bing exceeded his avg by 11 yards. Three of Bush's teammates had longer longs than Bush's long of 30.

I would like to see I link to the stats, if you do not mind. I am curious to see the rankings. As far as his team is concerned, he had 28 kick returns and the next guys had only 5, so that's a tough comparison. Also, I do not know that plain old average is the best way to gauge who's "best." Clearly, Bush is lethal in the open field. Anytime you can get him the ball in space is a great touch for him.

PUNT RETURNS 2005

179 yards ranked 51st

9.94 yard average ranked 38th

PUNT RETURNS 2004

376 yards ranked 11th

15.67 avg. ranked 9th

KICKOFF RETURNS 2004

537 yards ranked 30th

25.57 avg. ranked 16th

SC StatsNCAA Kickoff Returner Rankings

I'm pretty sure that the Saints just extended Michael Lewis for three years. Of course that was Pre Bush, so maybe they'll change their plans.

Can we say Jason Sehorn?!

Got any other examples or are you suggesting Bush not return kicks because one above average CB was injured returning kicks several years ago?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I really wish I had saved that link to an article that showed ST players are twice as likely to get injured as OFF/DEF guys.At any rate, I wouldn't be putting my $30M RB back to return kicks when I can get a vet minimum guy to do it just as well.

...or better.Regardless of his abilities or lack thereof as a kick returner, any GM or coach who puts the #2 overall pick back there should be fired without delay.

The guy returning the ball or the guys blocking/being blocked?

If you can get someone to do it just as well, it's a no-brainer. However, if Bush is the best for the job, I don't care how much money he makes.

Based on everything I've heard Payton, Loomis, and Mueller say this weekend (and I've heard alot of their comments), I'd be surprised if he returns kickoffs at all. Might see a punt return now and then.

With the Beer Man on board along with Michael Bennett's ability to run back kicks/punts, there's no need to put Bush back there. I think you'll see the Saints move to a very USC looking offense though. Smart QB that can control the game, thunder & lighting RB's and skilled posession receivers. No matter what Bush's role will be, I think it sure will be fun to watch this new offense!!!

wow i did not realize he only averaged 18 yds a kickoff return, this guy is suppose to be the next gale sayers, and a deadly open field runner. yet can only avg 18 per kickoff? that sucks.

is it me? I haven't seen a thread on "how bad do deuce and reggie hurt each other's value?

for this year

I think Reggie is a late teens back, and deuce moves out to the mid 20s

each on their own i think woulda been between 8 and 15...

As I posted in some other Reggie Bush thread, I'm guessing:D.McAllister -- 250 ATT, 950 YDS, 7 TD; 30 REC, 230 REC YDS, 0 REC TD

R.Bush -- 165 ATT, 750 YDS, 4 TD; 55 REC, 570 REC YDS, 3 REC TD

I don't recall Bennett returning punts, just kickoffs. Maybe Bennett on kickoffs and Bush on punts?

As for getting Bush the ball in space, I see his potential for receptions as being pretty high. Brees was the primary QB the year LT had 100 catches (100/725/4 receiving). The following season in SD, Gates emerged and LT's catches dropped to the low 50s.

It is true that NO may have better receivers than San Diego did. And it's a different offense. But they have to get Bush the ball, and I see McAllister getting around 60% of the carries.

I do think this will prevent McAllister from ever regaining the role he had in the passing game in his two top 7 seasons. Combined with sharing carries to a greater degree than in those good seasons and the potential for being affected by his injury, I don't see him as top 20.
