NEW YORK – JaMarcus Russell may be finally on the way out. Sources close to SBReport.net have indicated that the former number one overall choice in the 2007 draft will be cut. After lackluster efforts every season since he's been drafted, a poor work ethic and an uninspiring disposition, the Raiders are realizing that the time is now to cut ties with the dormant passer. The acquisition of Jason Campbell and fiery play of Bruce Gradkowski have convinced the Raiders to let those two signal callers go at it for the starting spot in 2010.

Russell, who signed a six-year contract out of college, worth up to $68 million with $31.5 million in guarantees, held out before landing the mega-deal and has been the ire of Oakland's fan-base.

Prior to being drafted, Russell had already hinted at his intentions in landing a big deal and milking the most out of his status stating, "As far as the swoosh, I was thinking it can be a little eye catcher to Nike," during his press conference declaring for the draft.

When asked where he would like to land, he commented, "Whoever picks first, whoever pays the most."

Oakland has been rumored in trade talks for quarterbacks all off-season; from Donovan McNabb to Ben Roethlisberger. They even intended to select Mike Kafka, a passer out of Northwestern in the 5th round today.

Russell has not shown that he can rehab his image either. In March, Willie Brown said, "It's quite a bit of weight that he's lost … I don't want to pin it down and say how much he lost but it will be a significant difference when you see him compared to last year.

"The most important thing is he's getting in shape. Not only losing weight, but getting in shape. He's watching his diet, he has special meals brought in that he's eating, and we have one of the Raiders, a former player there with him to monitor him and make sure things are going fine. The weight thing, he'll get it down. He'll get it down."

But sightings in Las Vegas and as he drove out of the Raiders facility after that, he did not appear as slim as the Raider legend indicated.
Hopefully your team steps right up to sign this intelligent, dedicated, finely sculpted athlete!

I was under the impression that if we cut him this year, there are no cap implications pst this year. Anyone know?

The modern day Scarlet Letter. How many people would accept $30mm+ in exchange for having fingers pointed & people laughing at you the final 50-60 years of your life? I liken Rusell's collapse to an 8-year old child actor who cannot find work at age 18.

If I'm Buffalo I'm trying to sign him asap.
As what? Security guard?
 No as the starting quarterback.
He can't play for University of Buffalo, he renounced his college eligibility when he declared for the draft.
Does Buffalo have an arena league team?
That's nice. They play both ways in Arena, right? QB/DT. Sweet.

He wouldn't start for the Buffalo School of Copy Machine Repair! Congrats to all Raiders fans for finally getting Crazy Uncle Al to do the right thing and ship him. (If he does in fact admit his mistake) Please have him drive through Dallas in his pimped up, over priced Cash Cowmobile, and pick up Dallas BUST, Roy Williams on his way to Buffalo.

 The starting QB for the BUFFALO BILLS
You're fishing, right? Why would you want him in Buffalo? Unless you're a Jets/Dolphins/Patriots fan.

Excuse me Andre, Ryan, and Akili...please make room for Mr. Russell
 Definitely he belongs to the Hall of Infamy at QB (I'd add David Klingler and a few others to the BUST list, but the above is a representative selection of the sort of player that Russell will be remembered as).

You think people are going to point fingers and laugh? Jamarcus Russell could show up at my front door right now, and I'd have no idea who he was, unless he was wearing a Raiders uni, and a jersey with his name on it. He was no great success, but his recognizability factor approaches zero, so I think he'll probably get along all right.

Bigger Bust: J. Russell or R. Leaf?
I'd still go with Leaf but that's compounded by the fact that Beatherd completely screwed the team for almost a decade in the trade with Arizona to move up 1 spot, just a few weeks after A had given Plummer the biggest contract in team history and was deadset on drafting that Eric W(?) defensive player. SD gave up their 1st rounder for two years and a few key role players. Dumbest draft day trade coupled with complete flameout QB who narrowly avoided a lengthy jail sentence...Leaf edges out Russell.

I'm curious to know what people think on this. Your team is 14-0 and winning at halftime. You decide to rest your starters, who do you put in, Curtis Painter or Jamarcus Russell?

Fact - His time in Oak was a complete disaster.

Fact - He's still noly 24; his weight and attitude issues were completely overblow.

He'll get picked up by someone and I wouldn't be surprised if has ends up as a nice backup or eventually emerges as an okay starter in the future. See- David Carr.

I'll compare him to someone I'm very familiar with as a Cowboys fan. Bobby Carpenter; he's shown glimpses but has been a huge dissapointment for what he was drafted to be; wouldn't surprise me if Carpenter ends up somehwere else and has a decent career.

He's only going to get noticed in America. If he goes to any other country he can introduce himself as Jamarcus Russell and nobody will even blink. Yeah, I think I'd trade places with him.

Carpenter hasn't lived up to his billing, but at least the guy shows up to work and gives a respectable level of effort. He may still have a decent career, I agree with you there. Russell never brought his "A" game to the field, IMO. He just didn't care, as others have pointed out. I doubt very much that someone signs him/gives him a second chance. My :lmao: .

Apparently ESPN hasn't gotten wind of this because right now they're talking about how Jason Campbell will be adding competition for the starting job to JaMarcus Russell.

Campbell spoke to the team before the trade, and said in an interview on NFLN that he is the starter.

Its a disaster of an organization, its not dark yet for J-Fat.
yeah, it was terrible the way the Raiders made him not work hard.
Outlaw structures lead to outlaw players. I was never in love with him as a top 3 pick, I just didn't think his skills translated to the pros, but you couldn't have dropped a guy like that into a worse environment. If he could do 2 years in Indy or NE as a #3qb, I think you'd see a whole new guy who might salvage something of his career. As you point out though, he has to want it, which has not shown yet.

The Raiders had a solid draft and their defense is going to be tough. Dropping this clown has to give them a shot at at least 3-4 more wins. Addition by subtraction.
