Allen Park -- The NFL has hit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in the pocket book for a hit he put on quarterback Jay Cutler in last week’s game against the Bears.

Suh has been fined $15,000 by the NFL. Roosevelt Barnes, a former Lions linebacker and Suh’s agent, confirmed the fine to FOX Sports Detroit Wednesday afternoon while the Lions were on the practice field.

“It’s ridiculous,” Barnes said in a telephone interview.

Suh’s hit came in the fourth quarter as he pursued Cutler from behind and tackled him at the Lions’ 14-yard line. Referee Ed Hochuli threw a flag and announced that the penalty was for unnecessary roughness.

Coach Jim Schwartz emphatically disagreed with the call at his press conference on Monday.

Schwartz was expected to comment after practice Wednesday.

What a joke

You've got to be kidding.

I said the other day that it was stupid for Suh to do, as it looked like a shot to the head in real time (at least to me), but replays clearly showed he hit him in the shoulder pads. A completely legal hit. And he gets fined for that? Unbelievable.

Why don't you compound a bad call with an even worse decision. Total ignorance on the NFL's part here.

Clearly Suh should have wrapped him up and pile-drived Cutler's shoulder through the turf ending his season.

It'll be interesting to see the fines next week to all the defensive players that push a WR out of bounds...

I wanna throw something at Goodell, this is a total joke.

Favre can sexual harass someone which is a crime, and get away with it. Yet you push down a player in a play to try to tackle him, and not only get flagged but get fined.

This actually angers me a bit as a football fan.

I am a white man, but even I can see this has racial motivtion all over it.

Birkett via Twitter:

#Lions DT Ndamukong Suh on his fine: "I do intend to appeal it." Said he appealed Delhomme fine earlier, but wouldnt share results.

I listened to first take and heard them mention something about black to white fine ratio, and it was insane. I can not quote the numbers but it was lopsided.Just sayin, Stupidity i understand, throwing the flag stupid, fining the guy after much discussion and replay? hmmmmm

In a season of terrible decisions this one is the worst so far.

I was watching the game live and it looked bad so I can understand the flag, but benefit of the replay should made this a no-brainer clean play, or at least what I thought was.

When it happened at full speed, I thought he hit him with his forearm to the back of the head too.A joke? If you are only making reference to the fine I understand your point. The standard that people are trying to hold referees up to is the joke.

Well black players will be fined more considering they make up 70% of the player base at least. Regardless this is so freaking bush league. Goodell is running this league into the ground. Funny part about this fine is Vick has been getting late hit, facemasked, hit high, hit out of bounds and can't get a flag thrown ( Reid had to question the NFL office about this and that is rare for him to do ).

This is ####### horrible.

I'd hate it, but I'd understand if Cutler is one of the golden boys which he isn't.

:excited: Isn't the fine pretty clearly what we're talking about here? I'd say it's most definitely a joke of a decision, regardless of the call on the field.

:excited: There are a lot more black athletes on defense than white. Kind of makes your comment pointless.

What an awful call. That said, maybe it's just me but Suh is developing a reputation as one mean dude on the field. IIRC he's had quite a few penalties like this.

Mistakes happen - we're not talking about the call here - it was obviously a mistake, but refs make mistakes and you have to live with em. But to compound the mistake with a fine when you have really clear video evidence that there was no shot to the head... Yeah, that is a joke.I honestly cannot think of a single reason why he should have been fined. I mean, does the league not look at the video evidence?

When I saw the play live, it looked very much like Suh very strongly nailed Cutler in the back with an elbow. It even looked like he cocked his arm with the intention of elbowing Cutler in his back. Based on that, I can understand the flag. To me, it looked like a nasty, dirty play when it happened.

However, on reply, it looks like it only looked like he nailed him with the elbow and in reality, he used his hands to push him down. If I'm right, the flag is justified, the fine is not.

Nearly ripped Delhomme's head off in the preseason. We need a guy like that though in the league.

The fine ratio of blacks an whites means nothing on its own, it needs to be compared to the ratio of black and white players in the league (perhaps more specifically to the ratio of black and white players on defense, seeing as defenders probably get 95% of the fines).

Yes — quarterbacks, kickers, and punters don't really count.

It's pretty clear, once you get a rep of being a dirty player, you're screwed. It's those players the league is targeting, not a racial issue. Christ, I used to think that sports was the only entertainment genre where race wasn't an issue. What an idiot I am.

me too and those announcers were falling all over themselves with stupid comments

Tim Ryan was one of the announcers, and he said it was a clean play.

Wow, horrible call by the league. There is no way that should have been a flag (unless the refs thought he elbowed him) or a fine. Suh getting shafted by a league more concerned with image than anything else.

I thought runners were "free game", if a QB does not slide and give himself up he is "free".

So we have a QB passed the line of scrimmage and is tackeld, and now the tackler is getting fined? Wow

After they looked at the replay. In real time Parrera made the point that it was a judgement call. The dumb thing IMHO, was that the announcers conceded the point until Parrera was no longer on with them, then they went back to what they saw in the replay, complaining that it shouldn't have been called. I thought that was tacky. (Basically, "arguing" with Parrera after he was no longer able to voice his side). The call (as the ref doesn't have replay available for that) on the field was fair given the rway it looked in real-time. The fine, given the replay is not. I hope Suh wins the appeal, otherwise it's a horrible injustice.

Mike Parrera explained this. A deliberate shot to the head of any player is a penalty. If Suh had done what everybody suspected he had in real time (which the replay shows clearly that he did NOT) - he would have been penalized and fined - even if it was a WR or RB. The QB angle is irrelevant. The issue is that Suh did NOT in fact hit Cutler in the back of the head with his fore arm. He likely didn't even strike him in the head at all. This should be clearly seen in the replay - but for some reason he was still fined.

I agree with this.. I thought the flag, in real time, was because he hit a QB too hard. I didn't agree with it, but I could see why it could be called unnecessary roughness. but I can't see a single reason why, with video hindsight, that it was worthy of a fine. There's even a view (from ESPN, I believe) that is not in the link Guru posted above that shows the angle from the endzone and you can CLEARLY see suh had his palms out toward Cutler and it was a full on two hand shove.I'm surprised how upsetting this fine is to me. I mean, it's not my money. I guess I thought the NFL would not add to the problem by fining Suh. The thing is, if the appeal is won by Suh, you won't hear a thing.I mean, seriously... Do the folks who levy the fines NOT have replayeta: the more I think about it, the more I think they don't use the replay.. I bet they levy the fines based on a listing of ref calls... Hochuli said unnecessary roughness for a forearm to the head.. automatic fine... we'll look at the replay if they appeal.

gotcha. Ok that at least makes more sense why they could fine him but I saw the replay before and didn't think it would be up for review. Still horrible but at least I feel better that you can still tackle people. :kicksrock:

Trent Cole was just fined 20k for a hit on Matt Schuab. No idea what hit it is but

"Trent Cole says he was fined $20,000 for low hit on Matt Schaub Thursday night and says he will appeal: "I was pushed into him.""
What?! They are getting way to liberally with the fines. I can't remember anything in that game that warranted a fine.
It was the play near the Texans goalline where Cole "dove" at his lower left leg, below the knee. Schaub came up gimpy, but played through it. It was eerily similar to the Brady/Palmer injuries. It was a flag on the field and an appropriate fine. Suh's is not.

They fined him for the intent to use his forearm. Since when he first cocked back, it looked like a forearm was coming, they are seeing that an intent to make an illegal play and thus fining him. Ridiculous.
