Respectablity is Reached?--Washington Wizards 2014-2015 Regular Season (1 Viewer)

So it's just a forgone conclusion that Ariza is gone after the season?

We need to be adding players not subtracting. We are getting rid of very good defender who hit the 3 at an epic level this season and capable of scoring 30 on any given night?

My understanding of where they are with the cap is Ariza would have to accept less than he's expected to get on the open market in order to stay in DC.

It all depends on what other moves they want to make. Based on what we've seen from Booker in the playoffs (and frankly what we haven't seen from Gortat) they could opt for Ariza over Gortat this summer and try again to convince Nene to play the 5.

The question is how much faith do they have in Porter. He projects as an outstanding defender much like Ariza, the question is whether Wall can turn him into an effective corner 3 guy as well. Don't underestimate Wall's impact, he basically made Ariza a star as explained by Kirk Goldsberry here. The real problem is that they committed to Webster over Ariza, but given how the two guys played in 2012-13 that was a defensible move.

But we can worry about that in the offseason, which amazingly won't start until mid-May at the earliest.

Porter really got way behind with his injury and never really caught up and when you add in he needs to put on some muscle in the worst way(looks rail thin)I'm not sure they could expect much from him in season 2 at this point.

Do you have the +/- stats for the playoffs?I'm almost positive Ariza is killing that stat and I would expect Gortat to be rather high up as well on the list.

They have to pay Ariza and Gortat. They don't have any feasible alternatives. They may not make the playoffs if they are starting Booker/Seraphin for extended periods while Nene is inevitably out next year. Webster is a huge downgrade on Ariza and they don't have any depth there either.

:goodposting:

I'm at this point as well and am in the boat that even though I believe the team needs better coaching and GM they will also have to bring them back because of how the team is playing right now.

With the team progressing and both of those players a huge factor in this I don't see any way both don't return unless somebody forks out silly money(which could happen).

I think they just have to roll the dice on Porter and find out what they've got. He shot threes in college, hopefully he can knock em down in the pros with the best three pointer setup man in the world running the offense. And you can't give up on a #3 overall pick to retain Ariza at age 30 when you've already got Martell Webster in year 2 of a 4/24 deal. I don't know what choice they have.

But who knows. As I said I'm just gonna bask in this amazing, unexpected run and worry about where the chips fall when it ends. To think that a month ago my realistic hope for the playoffs was an exciting 6 or 7 game series that got enough national attention that DC might become a decent alternative for free agents and Wall and Beal might start getting a few more calls next year.

One last thing

GO HAWKS!!!

I will be watching with my pants on the floor :excited:
Why would you want to play the better team?

3-1 against them regular season and I think they matchup well against them but do agree the Pacers are a mess.Home court also factors in so I'll take my chances against them.

Extra home game, for one.

Also the Wizards have handled the Hawks pretty well since the Horford injury. One blowout win and one sloppy win that never really felt in doubt even though it was close. Put Ariza on Korver and Nene on Antic and I think they can nullify Atlanta's three point firepower pretty well.

Plus there's always the possibility, however remote, that the Pacers somehow put it together and play like the team we saw in November and December. No such concern with the Hawks.

ETA: We also have Horford's family to thank for one of the greatest moments in CSN Washington history

The problem, as I see it, is that I don't know that "Three and D" wing guys are undervalued in the market right now. Considering that Ariza and Gortat have both been just good enough to overpay, I'd prefer to overpay for Ariza. But, of course, I thought that about 'Tell last year.

Don't talk your way into overpaying for a 30 yr old Ariza. You will regret it by January.
Ariza plays F in the NBA, not RB in the NFL. He has several more effective years.

If Porter can fill his shoes then fine but lot this point I haven't seen Wittman send Porter out to completely shut down an opposing player like Ariza can.

Like Tobias recommends, I'm going to enjoy the run and see what happens.

Of the two, IMHO, Gortat is the priority.

I have no idea what he will want. I doubt the demand for a 30 year old guy who everyone knows was in a perfect situation this year will be astronomically high. But, the Wizards already gave up their first round pick, and they can't go into next year with a Webster/porter rotation at the 3 next year (unless Porter has been showing something in practice that we haven't seen). They've mismanaged their way into this position of weakness and now have to deal with the consequences.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

Wizznutzz Incites!

As if a return to the playoffs and relevancy wasn't enough, we've also been blessed with the return of the Ruff Ryders horn riff to mark a Verizon Center win. And now the greatest revival of all: incites.

I don't want to jinx it, but thus far the playoffs are going so well for the Wiz that great things happen for them even when they sit around doing nothing: KD link

2nd round starts tonight against the Pacers and I'm not really sure what to expect.

Wall needs to be dominant and Ariza needs to keep George in check to get one of these in Indy,I suspect Gortat will be a key as well if he can just hit his shots.

I like the Wiz in 6 here but I'm a blind homer!

I never thought I'd hear the words "Wizards" and "beatdown" in the same sentence, or at least in reference to them as the party delivering the beatdown.

Good luck Wizards fans. This Pacers :homer: is headed to the game tonight. It should be interesting. :)
For all the arrogance and homerism pizzatyme brings in the NBA thread, he's clearly a passionate fan who loves the Pacers and has for a while, and doesn't really hate anyone in the league other than LeBron. Cheers, hope you all enjoy the ride like we've been doing.

I'll eat my crow on Wittman. He did a helluva job last night. Playing Gooden over Booker was pretty ballsy, but it ended up being the right call.

I didn't like that decision at all, but Gooden had some nice hustle plays down the stretch. That said, Booker's the better player and needs to play more.

Me too. Lets see how things play out but as long as they don't.....I don't even wanna say it. Lets let it play out but I'm leaning for extending him where I was clamoring for George Karl up until two weeks ago.

I think I was more surprised at how bad David West got abused last night from several different players.Ariza did a great job on George and couldn't miss from 3,Beal got aggresive and it paid off huge and Gortat played easily his best defensive game of the year in what should have been a double digit win had it not been for the missed free throws.

Speaking of free throws.

MAKE YOUR ####### FREE THROWS!!!!!!!!

Was I the only one screaming at the screen saying this last night?

Got the 1 win in Indy now it's time to go get 2.Another hot start could make this Pacers team fold up like a cheap tent.

Bullets Fever baby!!

I seem to be catching a fair-weather fever of some sort. Is there a cure?

Also, when the rain delay came at Nats Park last night, they put the Wizards game up on the jumbotron. Was shocking to see them up by 14 or whatever it was and a buzz rippled through the stadium.

I agree with CWebb that the cameras should be moved back on the baseline, but why did he ignore the replays that showed Gortat turning the ankle prior to falling over the camera guy?

No known cure, you just have to... beal with it.
:lmao:

Seriously, all are welcome on the bandwagon. I hate those dumb longtime fans getting all protective about it. Come on board and don't feel the slightest bit weird about it- if you live in the area they're your team as much as they're mine. Even if that means I can't afford to go to both games this weekend :kicksrock:

Agreed. I posted something similar on Facebook last night, trying to encourage my friends to hop on board the bandwagon. If nothing else, maybe I can have an easier time convincing friends to go to games next year.

How many of you were even alive the last time the Bullets/Wiz won a 2nd round playoff game? That was 4/28/1982.

The starting five were:

Frank Johnson-PG

Kevin Greavy-SG

Greg Ballard-SF

Rick Mahorn-PF

Jeff Ruland-C

With John Lucas and Spencer Haywood as the first guys off the bench.
