Respectablity is Reached?--Washington Wizards 2014-2015 Regular Season (1 Viewer)

Colin Cowturd rails on Wall again

If it’s a day ending in “y,” there’s a good chance ESPN’s Colin Cowherd will talk about John Wall and that time the Wizards point guard did the Dougie in 2010. Friday was such a day.

Cowherd, who earlier this month said he’d choose to build a franchise around Jimmy Butler over Wall, began talking about some of the great teams in NBA history and the common bond they shared.

“We all look at the NBA as a talent league,” Cowherd said. “It’s really talent plus brains.”

That observation, coupled with the news that Wall and a group of his friends were escorted off a plane in Las Vegas on Tuesday following a verbal altercation between one of the player’s friends and an unnamed passenger, served as the jumping off point for 10 minutes of Wall criticism. (The Wizards and Wall had no comment about the altercation.)

“That’s why I’m very critical when it comes to quarterbacks and point guards, especially points guards in the NBA,” Cowherd said. “Are you a smart guy? Kyrie Irving is really smart. Flawed, but smart. John Wall, talented, I don’t think he’s the smartest kid on the block. I think he’s got poor judgment. And yesterday, what do you know, John Wall was kicked off a plane in Vegas after somebody in his ‘group’ threatened another passenger and the pilot said I’m not taking off, get these clowns off the plane. ‘Well it’s not John’s fault!’ You are the company you keep. Smart guys hang out with smart guys. Funny people hang out with funny people. Libs with Libs, Republicans-Republicans, cute girls with cute girls, dopes with dopes.

“Once again, John Wall – drip, drip, drip – it doesn’t mean he’s the devil. It doesn’t mean Colin Kaepernick’s the devil. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t have talent. John Wall, college games, gang signs during games. The Dougie. Stupid. Turnover machine – that’s a judgment stat. Paul Pierce calling him out, needs to work harder. Thrown off a plane, hanging with dopes. Poor judgment, poor choices. You can look at his stats. His field goal percentage and his turnovers are [bad], those are judgment statistics. Do you take good or bad shots? John Wall takes a lot of bad shots. Turnovers? Poor judgment. A lot of turnovers. It’s what he is! By the way, the problem is, because he’s so darn talented, we think he’s a leader, and as Brad Daugherty told us yesterday, it doesn’t work that way.”

At this point, Cowherd plays a clip of Daugherty saying that GMs and coaches usually expect their superstars to lead, even though many of them aren’t natural leaders.

“Just because you’re the most talented doesn’t mean you’re the best leader,” Cowherd continued. “Rasheed Wallace was the most talented guy I ever covered. He’s not a leader. That Trail Blazers team I covered – all sorts of great talent. No leaders. They didn’t have a leader. Scottie Pippen in the end was not a great leader. He was a great talent. And so, this whole thing about John Wall, it’s not the end of the world. I think John Wall’s a great player, but all his pom-pom waving, cheerleader outfit-wearing, sycophant fan boys, they’re like ‘You’re wrong.’

“John Wall has been in this league five years. Five years. He has not won a second-round playoff series in the dog-vomit Eastern Conference. And Paul Pierce now doesn’t want to play with him. He’s a hell of a talent, so is Colin Kaepernick. But it’s like fan boy after fan boy…five years in this league, in the Eastern Conference, they’re not even viable. The East is embarrassingly bad. I mean, the Cavs are all beat up – [Anderson] Varejao out, [Kevin] Love out, Kyrie hurt – flushed through the Hawks in four games. Can’t win a second-round playoff game. Wouldn’t even be a playoff team in the West. It’s not that John Wall’s a bad guy, he’s not a horrible human. He’s a great player. He gives to charity, but he’s immature, and one of the things I’ve found, here’s what’s the funny thing about maturity: Guys who aren’t mature…can’t spot immaturity. Like, immature guy doesn’t see what immaturity is when he’s doing it.

“John Wall is what John Wall is. Gang signs in games, pro and college. That dumb Dougie. Doesn’t always put the time in according to Paul Pierce, but he gets kicks off playing with his entourage. It’s not that he’s a bad guy, he’s not a horrible human being. He needs to grow up! You don’t see John Stockton doing that and Magic Johnson involved in that. For the record, you are the company you keep. They say that you are the average of your five best friends. So look around, if you’re five best friends are corrupt, you’re corrupt. If you’re five best friends are smart, you’re probably smart. If you’re five best friends are in great relationships and are good dads, you probably value that. That’s what’s important to you. So if you hang around integrous people, likable people, you are your five best friends. So if you’re hanging around guys – I’m 50 years old, none of my buddies get kicked off airplanes – grow up. It’s not the end of the world, but it shows a pattern of what he is.

“And I got into a discussion with somebody the other day – a power broker in the NBA – I would say the second-most powerful person in the NBA, doesn’t work for this network. Second-most powerful person in the NBA, he may not even know he’s that powerful. Let me say third [-most powerful person in the NBA]. Adam Silver’s one, LeBron’s two, he’s three. And I mentioned John Wall. He just laughed. He’s a great kid, but, you know. [No] championships. Stars don’t want to play with him. But again, young people will defend him to the end. Go ahead! It’s not the end of the world, but you know, what I find funny is, most young people think it’s all about just playing ball, man. It’s not. It is about judgment, choices, who you surround yourself with. There’s a reason guys want to play with LeBron. He’s smart. He’s a smart guy. Guys wanted to play with Magic. He’s smart. Did you ever notice who Derek Fisher’s buddies were? It’s all the smart, great players in the league. You’re going to see with John Wall, everybody thinks [Kevin] Durant’s going to go play with him. No he’s not. He doesn’t want to put his career in the hands of John Wall. No way. He’s already got John Wall; it’s Russell Westbrook. That’s not working out. I mean, seriously. Westbrook’s a huge talent, but I wouldn’t build my franchise around Russell Westbrook either.”

Jimmy Butler on the other hand…

Cowherd returned to Wall later in the show. (He’s probably still talking about him now, but at some point a bunch of criticism bookended by “but he’s not a horrible human” all begins to sound the same.)

“I get a lot of heat because I’m critical of John Wall, though I will also admit I also compliment him,” Cowherd said. “The people who defend him never criticize him. At least I’m fair. I compliment him on his greatness, which he is really brilliant, and then I criticize him. His blogosphere and his fan boys, they never criticize him, but it’s all bon mots and it’s all roses and bouquets and birds chirping and rainbows.”

Listening to Cowherd talk about John Wall is none of those things. Enjoy your weekend.
Washington Post put this up.

I'm not sure I could hate a radio guy anymore than I do with Cowturd and it's not just because of his hate for Wall.

Cowherd is such a clown and a hack. All the talk about this just feeds into what he wants, which is attention.
The part that got me was that Wall hasn't gotten out of the 2nd round in a terrible Eastern Conference in 5 years. It's almost as though Cowturd doesn't even look at what was surrounding Wall his first few years and the fact he played with broken bones in his hand this year.Had he been healthy I don't doubt for a second they would have taken the Hawks out but I guess I'm just another fanboy in his eyes.So bad it's funny to be honest but you're right,it's all for attention.

Exactly. It's not like the Wizards have been a powerhouse team the last 2 seasons. Most didn't expect much of them in 13-14 and they made the 2nd round. Again in 14-15, many were thinking they were going out in the 1st round. I too think they would have beaten in the Hawks if Wall doesn't get hurt. I'm convinced Cowherd hasn't watched a minute of Wizards basketball in his life.

From Grantland today:

[Klay] Thompson had blown Saunders away during a pre-draft workout in 2011, when Saunders coached the Wizards. The Washington brain trust considered reaching for Thompson with the no. 6 pick before going the safe route with a big man — Jan Vesely, who ranked higher on most draft boards but is now out of the league. “We toyed with it,” Saunders says, “but heaven forbid you go out of the box and pick someone you’re higher on than anyone else.”

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/whats-next-for-kevin-love/

I always complain about the mock drafts that had the Wizards picking Kawhi Leonard. I guess that's a new one to add to the complaints too.

...And is that really a "heaven forbid" thing? What's the point of having your own scouts and doing your own scouting if ignore all that for what the consensus experts think?

Time to bump this back up as the season is nearing.

I have to say I'm pretty optimistic they will reach 50 wins this year and have a top 4 slot in the East, maybe even win the division.

Key losses-Pierce and Seraphin

Key additions-Dudley,Anderson,Neal and Oubre.

A few questions still remain for me.Will Beal take that next step up and become all-star caliber like many believe he can?

Can Otto Porter build upon his strong playoff performance?

How will this new up tempo offense play out?

Can Nene remain content will his new role as a backup?

Can they stay healthy(Beal, I'm looking at you)

So yeah I'm pretty excited to see this team in action and hope they can deliver a ECF trip this year. With that said I have zero doubts it all will crumble and they fight to just get to .500.

Tobias(or anybody else),thoughts on this year and what to look for?

If Porter takes a huge step forward these guys are going to be pretty good even if Wall and Beal are the same guys they were last year. If Wall and Beal are also a bit better they could be really good.

I'm incredibly optimistic as well.

Preseason is mostly meaningless when it comes to wins and losses, but the peripheral stats are remarkable and encouraging. They lead the league in offensive efficiency at 112.8, a number that would have led the NBA last year and is a full 11 points per 100 possessions ahead of their number for last season. That's not that impressive given their opponents (mostly awful east coast teams chosen for proximity), but the way they're doing it is great. Their assist ratio matches two of the league's best offenses from last season Golden State and Cleveland. More assisted shot attempts = better shot attempts.

And of course there's the will-documented efforts to shoot more threes. I love that they're giving serious thought to starting Hump and bringing in Nene off the bench. The starting lineup was a disaster last postseason, forcing the Pierce stretch 4 lineup to dig them out of holes constantly, which thankfully it was good enough to do. Humph starting and shooting a couple 3s a game is the sort of out of the box thinking we generally haven't seen from this coach/franchise.

Losing Pierce hurts- I originally thought people were overselling his regular season contributions but I checked the numbers and that's not the case. He played a decent amount and scored at a decent clip. Still, I think if Otto takes a step forward and Dudley is healthy early they can replace him on both ends.

If they can stay healthy and make the revamped offensive game plan work at least relatively well against better defenses in the regular season I think they'll have a good shot to be the first Wiz team to crack 50 wins since the 70s. They can't afford to lose Gortat or Wall for more than a handful of games, though. There's nobody on the roster who can replace what they bring.

Weird season, with the roster in a holding pattern awaiting 2016 free agency while also needing to prove that they're good enough to compete for a title with just one key addition at the 4 (be it KD or Horford or whatever they're thinking for Plan C). I think they did a great job balancing the two interests.

Not sure what to expect this season. Obviously they should be a playoff team again, but that's about as far as my expecations go. We all know that this team is just waiting for next year, right or wrong.

Key additions-Dudley,Anderson,Neal and Oubre.
Can I get a breakdown of these guys? Who the hell they are and what their roles here will be?
Dudley's the key acquisition. He's the prototype for the new NBA- smart defender who can knock down 3s and defend any position from SG to PF. The downside is he's coming off back surgery and is now on the wrong side of 30, which is maybe how the Wiz got him for nothing from the Bucks. BTW he's also a great guy, very engaging and fun, always a good quot, Zach Lowe loves having him on his podcast. Wiz fans are going to love him.

Anderson is depth at the 2/3. He doesn't really bring anything special to the table, but he's functional. Never been a greatshooter or defender, but respectable at both, and had his best offensive year last year so maybe he's a late bloomer? The hope is we don't see him much if Beal and Porter stay healthy and make the leaps we're hoping they'll make. Best case scenario Wall does for him what he did for guys like Ariza, Webster and Butler and he turns into basically Webster/Butler but with better D.

Neal is more depth, but at the 1/2. Sometimes gets hot off the bench. Guessing the hope is that he'll maybe help them avoid some of those early 4th quarter offensive droughts when Randy likes to have 4 or 5 starters resting. If he does that a couple times he's done his job IMO.

I know very little about Oubre but from what I've read he's got a ways to go. Guessing we won't see him much this season unless Porter goes down for a while. Ceiling is high but he was picked to help with Wizards teams down the line a few years, not this year's squad.

Key additions-Dudley,Anderson,Neal and Oubre.

Dudley is a good defender who can also knock down 3's.He's not ready yet because of injury/surgery but once he is could become a good role player off the bench.

Anderson is another of those chip in guys that will be good off the bench in certain situations and hopefully can shoot a little better from 3 given the fact Wall will be feeding him on occasions.

Neal will be stuck behind Beal and others but is a good depth guy in case injuries happen.

Oubre is the rookie who has shown flashes of being good and flashes of needing a ton of work.Look for him on the end of the bench at best this year unless the injury bug happens.

IMO the season rides on Otto replicating his playoff performance for a whole year and even making a leap beyond that. They also need Beal to stay healthy and be more of a shot creator. If those two things come to pass they should be a tick better than last year. Pierce was a piece that moved the needle for them last year and they need to replace that production with internal development.

If Beal gets hurt, Otto regresses and they get nothing from Dudley, they'll take a big step back. The big man rotation is frightening. But, that said, I think the ECF is a realistic goal though unless they get some bad luck with the seeding and run into the Cavs early.

Not sure what to make of this new offense given the current roster they have.Still don't have enough quality shooters on the floor for Wall to find IMO.Maybe Dudley turns into that guy at some point but coming off of injury it's hard to say one way or the other.

I do not want to see Humphries and Gooden taking those 3's(4 per game between them)but it seems they really don't have much choice unless they go really small and have a Wall/Sessions/Beal/Porter/Gortat(or Nene)lineup.

Team could just as easily be 0-3 but luckily are 2-1 so I won't push the panic button until I see more.

Could be just my pessimistic side coming out  .Am I not seeing something others are here?

Two in a row at home over the Spurs?

Wall, while not shooting very well, was outstanding with 13 assists and only 1 turnover and fed Beal for the game winner.Speaking of Beal,he sure does look like a much more confident player this year.Loved how on the winning shot he made that subtle little move to free himself for space(I believe Aldridge was on him while switching?)and drained it for the dagger.

I guess that answers the question who will step up and take the shot when needed.

The dagger shot was pretty well designed and executed. Good use of Gortat to make sure it was Aldridge on Beal one-on-one. One of the best I've seen from Witt in that situation.

Anybody know what happened to the D on this team?

Brutal last two games.
Poor defensive rebounding + ridiculous shooting from the likes of Jared Sullinger and Kent Bazemore. Way too early to worry. If they're still 20th in the league in defense in December it might be time for concern, but until then I'll chalk it up to growing pains with the new system/smallball lineups.

Turnovers not helping the situation either plus they really don't have the shooters that they need to run this new system IMO.I'm really trying to buy into this new style(in fact I wanted to see this a few years ago)but if it means the inability to stop anyone it won't even matter.

I will be patient but this trend is very alarming to me.Hopefully they turn it around soon enough.

They have the shooters to run the system. They've been in the league's upper tier in 3 Pt % for the last two seasons thanks to Beal + Wall's ability to hit spot up guys in rhythm. Porter is obviously vastly improved from long range. Jared Dudley is a career 40% shooter from 3 who has started slow. They'll be OK there.

The only trend I see is the turnovers. The defense has been mediocre, but it's a small sample size skewed by Jared Sullinger transforming into Dirk Nowitzki for two hours. Small sample sizes can produce weird things; two playoff teams that hang their hat on D, Milwaukee and Memphis (second and fourth in the league last year), are below them.

The turnovers are a concern but otherwise I don't see much to worry about, and lots to like- namely the two guys they needed to show significant improvement, Porter and Beal, and both doing just that. They've only lost one game in which they were favored (home vs NYK) and won two in which they were underdogs (@ MIL, home vs SA). Give it some time for the anomalies to balance out and for them to get used to this new style of play. If they're still turning it over 25 times a game in a month we've got problems. Or if Beal's shoulder is badly hurt. Now that would be a problem.

I will chalk it up to a small sample size.Just not liking that Wall and Porter both shooting under 30% from 3 and that Hump is being asked to jack up 3's as well.Entertaining sure but a bit troubling for me.

Defense just could be they are not sure where to be or it could be on the effort department.Maybe Wittman could dial back the offense a touch and get the defense back in tune and then try and move forward again.I'm not convinced(still)that he can/will do this but we shall see.

Not much to say about the game except it was straight up garbage from the opening tip.Never were in the game or competed very hard.

Great defensive effort though :lmao:

Time to panic yet Tobias?

Just not liking what I'm seeing so far.Defense at the rim and against the 3 have been terrible.

No reason to panic at 6-6 in late November, but plenty of cause for concern. Defense is awful, particularly on the perimeter which should be a strength. Wall and Beal are both struggling mightily in what should have been career seasons for them. Players' frustration with Wittman is pretty clear. And maybe worst of all, the East is no joke. Can't coast your way to a 44 win season and then unleash Playoff Randy in the 4/5 series. This year 44 wins might leave you in the 7 or 8 seed. The Wiz legitimately have to worry about just making the playoffs this year.

The only good news is Dudley and Porter. Every lineup with a positive +/- has Dudley on it. Wittman has clearly noticed and he's closing games now. Porter has also been decent- not a breakthrough most improved player type season or anything, but continuing his steady improvement.

Would be very helpful to get at least one of the games this weekend ahead of the guaranteed L in Cleveland on Tuesday. 6-9 (nice) would be a bit of an early season hole and the East is too good this year to dig much further than that.

The East is vastly improved so I agree with what you're getting at here which is why I'm very concerned about this team being anything more than just a 7 or 8 seed to get bounced soon after.

Defense though doesn't look like a quick fix given the offense they are trying to run and I'm still not convinced they have the shooters to be an effective team night after night. This is partially on Witt for sure but I would argue this isn't an ideal roster for his offense he wants and the frustration level is boiling and it shows on the court from Wall and a few of the others.

Porter has made a step up but that effort against the Pacers was horrendous.George and Miles could not be stopped and while Porter may not deliver much on the offensive end he has to be a force defensively and he was basically invisible.

Once the 20 game mark hits we will know more but the trend right now has me thinking they will be fortunate to make the playoffs.I hope, really hope that I'm wrong.

Great weekend of games for the Zards.

C's basically own them in every way.Thankfully that game was over at the opening tip, lord forbid they actually try to make a game of it,embarrassing.

Then the Raps come to town and John Wall goes 6-25 and missed two late free throws that would have at least sealed an OT.

Gortat pretty much sums it up right now with this quote.

“It’s not easy but we got to cut the negativity we have coming from players, coaches, staff, media,” Gortat said. “We just got to cut that. It’s not even fun coming here anymore. There’s so much negativity. I understand we’re losing games but, damn, we just got to cut that right now, man. It’s not fun at all.”
Wheels are falling off the wagon fast but it was a good run :X

No idea where John Wall went earlier this year but last night he surely looks to be back.Dominated the Cavs with ease which was shocking given the Cavs don't lose at home.

Defense has returned the last 2 games so that is encouraging as well they just need to get healthy now and somehow keep Wall pissed off.

ETA:If they lose tonight to the Lakers I take it all back

Wall was one of the worst players on the floor vs the deep but star-less Celtics, then a few days later he's the best player on the floor vs the freaking Cavs. Pretty bizarre season for him.

Lost in the awesomeness of last night: Beal was dreadful on the offensive end again. The win was nice but they need him to straighten out or they're gonna be stuck in neutral all year.

How in the world do they totally dominant the Cavs in Cleveland, yet come home and lay an egg against the lowly Lakers?

23 turnovers,Beal looking like straight up garbage,Porter invisible and they go away from the Gortat/Wall pick and roll in the 4th is a good start.

I would also add that Dudley trying to guard Randle is not a very good idea.

Don't forget about the missed FTs too. And only 5 threes attempted in the first half, which is when they lost the game.

Just an embarrassing effort on both ends all night. Media was awful too- fawning over Kobe and then questioning why the place was packed with lakers fans, as if that wasn't predictable and totally reasonable (why would Wiz fans spend 2X face value to see a crappy midweek game when we can see the team play better opponents this weekend for less than face value).

Not a fun night to be a fan of this franchise.

Was listening to the Junkies this morning and a guy called in saying he's a season ticket holder and sold his $45 tickets last night for $150 a pop. They said he was what is wrong with the fans there. I have no issue with it. If someone was willing to offer me more than 3x what I paid for a ticket to a random week night game in December, then hell yeah I'd take that.

Yup. I go to 10-15 games a year. I went to the Pacers game last week, I'm going to the Mavs game on Sunday with my family. I root for the Wizards and don't care that much who they're playing, so I attend games where I can get good seats on the cheap and thus can go to more games in person, and avoid games that are priced higher by the team or cost too much on the secondary market. I read lots of tweets from other serious Wiz fans saying basically the same thing last night. Seems like trying to go to as many home games as you can on your budget is the exact opposite of being a bad fan to me, but what do I know? I'm sure the media people who get free passes to the games know better.

The one thing DC sports is known for is having opposing fans take over, especially the bigger name players/teams.Lakers have always had a huge following in this area much like the Cowboys and various hockey teams(Pens,Rangers,Wings etc)do but it does bother me when it's hard to tell who the home team is based upon the crowd reactions.I remember sitting back at a Pens vs Caps game and watching Mario score and having half the arena stand and cheer or boo when the Caps score.

Caps season ticket holders do the exact same thing in that they sell the big ticket games to try and make back some of the investment and to me I have no problem with it or who buys the seats. They are pretty damn expensive and if you can make money on a seat more power to you.Not sure exactly what the season ticket count if for the Wiz but based upon attendance numbers I would say they have quite a few seats open to whoever wants them.Jordan coming to town was a cash cow back in the day as were the Celtics and Lakers on any visit they made.

Back to the Zards though. With Beal struggling why does he settle for the jumper most of the time, especially last night?

And with Porter,am I wrong just seeing this guy as someone who is nothing special and may be best served coming off the bench at full health?

One last take on the crowds in DC: I think DC is at a disadvantage in way. There's so many people that live here that are from all kinds of different areas. Down here in Southern MD, there's a ton of Pennsylvania transplants. So lots of Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Penguins, Steelers fans down this way. I don't think other cities quite have the same issue with all the transients that DC does. That in turn makes it tougher for the home teams to really get that homefield advantage, especially when they aren't playing well.

It also helps that the Skins have been terrible for 2 decades and the Wiz have sucked since the 80's.Caps have come around because of Ovie and the team at least being playoff competitive. Not sure on the Nats but I suspect they have the same problem given how young the franchise is here and no success.

The Nats have gotten a little better recently, but because they have been winning. It wasn't that long ago that Nats Park was filled with Philly fans. Winning helps. Now if only all the teams around here could do more of it!

Gortat to miss a few games. Heading to Poland to be with his mom who is in the hospital.
Tough break with Nene out. Wonder if they bring him back sooner than expected. If they lose the next three- which they could easily do if the only healthy big men on the roster are Dejuan Blair and Ryan Hollins- they're at 6-12 and have dug themselves a huge hole in an improved East.

Some thing are more important than basketball though. Good to see the org doing the right thing here.

ETA: Apologies to Humphries for the grievous omission. Hump-Blair-Hollins; now that's a frontcourt.
