Bryant's knee tendinitis hasn't changed Cowboys' plans for him on punt returns, as long as he's healthy

Jason Garrett said the Cowboys have not settled on their kickoff and punt returners yet, and that Dez Bryant’s knee injury has not affected their thinking about him returning punts. “If he’s the best guy, and he’s healthy, we’ll give him a chance to do it,” Garrett said Saturday at Valley Ranch, where the Cowboys started their practice week for Wednesday’s season opener against the New York Giants. “Those guys have to be reliable, first and foremost, in taking care of the ball. And then you obviously want to evaluate their playmaking ability after that. Dez has shown that he’s capable of doing both, and if he’s healthy, we’ll give him a chance to do it.” Bryant was found to have patellar tendinitis after an MRI exam in San Diego two weeks ago, when he came off the practice field with a knee injury. The Cowboys kept him out of action after that until Saturday’s practice.

Bump Percy Harvin and Darren Sproles. ESPECIALLY if return yards are scored the same as rush/rec yards.I like the Titus Young and Randall Cobb calls too for nice bumps, but Harvin and Sproles were the #3 WR and #3 RB in my leagues last year where return yards = half the value of rush/rec yards. Make return yards the same as rush/rec yards and Sproles would've been the #1 RB in my league last year.
LawFitz, Do you mind if you post your leagues scoring rules? (to help compare to mine)
1 pt per 10 yds rush/rec0.5 PPR6 per TD-2 per fumble1 pt per 20 ret yds

This thread was started in June and may have some hopelessly out of date information. Anyone know of a recently (read: after preseason week 3) updated list of expected PRs and KRs? I imagine most return jobs should be settled by now but it's difficult to track them down team by team. The FBG depth chart is useless for this task as they often list multiple KR and PR per team and you don't know who's the primary option (aside from the fact that the listed KR or PR is often wrong, too).

Thanks, Mike. Do you handle the PR/KR updates for the FBG depth charts too? It would be nice to have players given a PR1/KR1 designation there.

I'm not involved with the depth charts. However I did pass along my list to the depth chart guy.

How about on the main page of this website?

from rotoworld:

Coach Mike Mularkey confirmed Mike Thomas will operate as both the Jaguars' kickoff and punt returner this season.

We do posts like this for return-yardage leaguers. Thomas should also be the Jaguars' slot receiver between Justin Blackmon and Laurent Robinson on passing downs. Cecil Shorts showed improvement in the preseason, though, and plays the same position as Thomas, so those two may form a rotation at No. 3 receiver. Sep 3 - 2:23 PM

I've read in several places Thomas is on thin ice. Maybe he can salvage his job and create a niche here. Not sure his body type is ideal as a primary returner though..

Yea I read that rotoworld piece too, it's dated about a month before this one. If you've watched any of the preseason games, you'll know that Gabbert likes to check down to Thomas ALOT. He's as good a bet as any other KR/PR that gets PT in the slot.

I still think Rashad Jennings has a good chance of taking over once he takes a back seat to MJD on offense.

Darius Reynaud takes over in Tennessee

For the first time since the 2009 season, the Titans will have a new return man. Darius Reynaud replaces Marc Mariani, who is out for the season with a broken leg. Mariani was a Pro Bowler in 2010, and he ranked in the top 10 in the AFC in punt and kick returns last year.

“I think he is a different type of guy because of the speed he possesses,” coach Mike Munchak said of Reynaud. “He has good run instincts when he has the ball in his hands. He’s shown good vision. … We like what we have seen and any time he touches the ball he’s a guy who can make plays for us.”

Reynaud, who returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown in Week One of the preseason at Seattle, has plenty of experience in the return game. He was the Vikings’ primary return man in 2009, and he returned punts and kicks for the Giants in 2010. Reynaud has a career punt return average of 8.3 yards, and his career average on kicks is 20.5.

David Wilson!?

3 kick returns, healthy yardage.

Now if he can only fix the fumble problem and regain the old man's trust...

49ers

(AP) - The last time Kyle Williams circled underneath a punt that really mattered, in the NFC Championship game, the New York Giants capitalized on his miscues. Williams is likely to get an early opportunity to atone for those mistakes Sunday in another key NFC matchup when the San Francisco 49ers open the season against the Green Bay Packers. With regular punt returner Ted Ginn Jr. questionable to play, Williams is expected to handle return duties against the Packers like he did in place of an injured Ginn against the Giants in January's title game. That didn't work out so well. Williams muffed one punt that led to a New York touchdown, then fumbled another punt in overtime that led to the winning field goal in the Giants' 20-17 victory.

For those of you in deep leagues (16+ teams) with return yardage like I am just a heads up that Run DMC's handcuff, Taiwan Jones, will be handling kickoff returns on Monday night vs. San Diego due to Jacoby Ford's gimped foot.

This is rather significant seeing how the Chargers have been Top 2 in kickoff return yards surrendered each of the past two seasons.

Thanks for the heads up. I think SD has been middle of the pack in terms of yards/return given up, but they've scored a lot (more kickoffs) and have had injuries at kicker (shorter kicks) that may also affect the amount of total yards they've given up. I had Ford as a good play for week 1 before he got hurt (his "tri" role is nice when he's healthy)...

SAN DIEGO

WR-KR Richard Goodman will handle the majority of kickoff returns, while WR-KR Micheal Spurlock will primarily block. “I really feel great about [Goodman] being a returner and me having an opportunity to go block for him,” Spurlock said. “Nine times out of 10 I want him to have the ball, just because I know what he can do with it. But if I get it, I've done it. So it's just a great opportunity for both of us to be back there and make plays.” Goodman had a 105-yard kickoff return for a TD against the Raiders in their last game, but was sidelined with a groin injury for most of preseason. He played in every game last season and ranked fourth in the NFL with a 27.5-yard kickoff return average.
OAKLAND
Oakland Raiders receiver and returner Jacoby Ford has been ruled out for Monday night's game against San Diego because of a sprained left foot. Ford hasn't practiced or played since being injured Aug. 17 in a preseason game at Arizona. Ford, who missed six games with a sprained left foot last season, hasn't run on the field since his latest foot injury. Backup running back Taiwan Jones will return kicks and cornerback Philip Adams will return punts against San Diego, coach Dennis Allen said Saturday.

Will Jones keep the return job now that Ford is out a while? Does D.Moore return kicks at all? I'm in a league where the commish accidentally set it for 1 pt for every 10 return yards and everyone is scrambling to get return guys. Any suggestions on who might be a stud this year besides a couple obvious plays like Harvin and Cobb?

I was also curious about Moore being a KR this year. With his recent injury history, you would think they wouldn't use him as a returner.

Pretty sure he's been used as a return man before. If he does return kicks then he could be big in this league I'm in.

Exactly, he would HUGE in the league I'm in as well. Randall Cobb was like the top WR last week due to the return yardage bonus.

Reynaud has WR/RB eligibility in Yahoo! leagues...could be a valuable player if chris johnson goes down

DALLAS

The Cowboys could have a new kickoff returner for Sunday’s home opener against Tampa Bay, coach Jason Garrett indicated Monday. Felix Jones fumbled away the opening kickoff in Sunday’s 27-7 loss at Seattle and is ranked 23rd in the NFL with a 21.3-yard per attempt average. “Line 1 in returning the football in the NFL for me is ball security,” Garrett said Monday. “We’re always looking at personnel…and when you make a play like that, you look hard at that and what the alternatives are.” Among the candidates to replace Jones are Kevin Ogletree, Dwayne Harris, Phillip Tanner and Morris Claiborne. Garrett was asked if he thought about benching Jones after the fumble. “I think those situations vary, to be honest with you, and one of the things we talk about all the time with our players is you have to move on,” Garrett said. “You have to move on from success. You have to move on from adversity. Taking care of the football is really a critical part of the game and clearly he didn’t do that on the first play. “But he was going to go back out there the next time and we had to make sure that he was ready to go and he returned the ball better as he got more opportunities in the game and certainly protected it better. But I think the situations vary. Sometimes you say, ‘Hey, you’ve had enough opportunities. Let’s put the next guy in,” and other times you believe in the guy because of his body of work and you give him another chance to do it.”

With Beanie Wells out for a while, LaRod Stephans Howling should see an increase in carries, right?

I'd like to hear how people like Felix Jones going forward or is it possible Claiborne will take over? Also Is Rainey getting most of the returns in Pitt.? And there any other good sleeper names out there, preferably someone with a wr designation??

With Javon Ringer out, I wonder if Darius Reynaud will see a few extra carries this week. He's having a nice season returning punts and kicks, so a few extra carries/targets would be really nice. He's WR/RB eligible in Yahoo leagues too!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that they have placed WR Sammie Stroughter on Injured Reserve and have signed WR Chris Owusu

Problem there is that Arizona's DEF is so good that Howlings isn't seeing many kickoffs. Think he has 4 on the year so far.
Didn't realize that Powell has the same number of KR's (3) as LSH...Powell has 90 yards to LSH's 66...

They actually gave up some scores the past two games but think LSH was out hurt. They also faced Greg The Leg last week which doesn't help the kirk return game.

HOUSTON

When Texans coach Gary Kubiak said he wasn’t happy with Trindon Holliday’s punt and kickoff returns, he meant it. Holliday was placed on waivers today when the Texans also placed inside linebacker Brian Cushing on injured reserve. To replace Cushing, the Texans signed eight-year veteran inside linebacker Barrett Ruud, a former second-round pick in 2005. Ruud will provide depth behind starters Bradie James and Tim Dobbins. The Texans also promoted offensive guard Cody White from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Holliday returned three kicks for touchdowns during the preseason but he hadn’t been able to generate any of that magic in the regular season. He was averaging 9.2 yards on punt returns and 19.4 on kickoff returns. The Texans have one of the league’s best kickoff returners in safety Danieal Manning, but last year, they didn’t want to risk him getting injured on that return team. Veteran running back Justin Forsett and rookie receiver Keshawn Martin could be the leading candidates to return kickoffs. Martin also could return punts. Shiloh Keo also returned some punts as a rookie last season.

I play in a league where a top returner can score like a RB1 or WR1. Just added Martin and Manning. I don't have space for the other 2 candidates to replace him Forsett or Keo. Did I make the best pick on top 2? Is it possible LeStar Jean could be in the mix??

According to latest Kubiak presser, Keshawn Martin will be returning both kicks and punts for the Texans.

Overall if I had to guess I would say Forsett would be the 2nd option for kick returns, though while Tate is still out they might go another direction for backup just to not risk injury to Foster's backup. I think a lot of people would like to see Manning returning kicks, but they've been shy about putting him back there since he was injured. Don't want to risk losing him at safety again.

So if it were me I'd get Forsett as the backup for long term. Though he may have less potential than Manning, I think he's more likely to actually see time as a returner.
