rey maulauga (1 Viewer)

Is this guy playing mlb or at Sam at training camp so far? Is he going to play in the nickel?
First bengals depth chart came out today. He's listed as First String SLB. Jones, Hodge, Muckleroy listed at MLB.Obviously its all subject to change but that seems to be where it stands right now.

Rotoworld:

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer predicts that Dhani Jones will hold off Rey Maualuga to be the Bengals' Week 1 starting middle linebacker.

Maualuga will be in the starting lineup in some capacity, but Reedy expects it'll be on the strong side. Michael Johnson would then work as a situational pass rusher. Jones' play-calling ability and leadership skills are valued by the coaching staff, but Maualuga is going to replace him inside in due time.

I have no skin in this game what-so-ever, but the Bengals are blowing it with Rey Mags; why draft him then? Why spend a pick on a player you refuse to optimize. Maybe we are not seeing something here, maybe his learning curve is extra slow or there is some negative attitude from him to the coaches that we dont see (as outsider observers). But Rey needs to command the middle and put a physical presence the Bengals need.

If he's got any other alternative, Marvin Lewis will favor the player who makes fewer mistakes (even if fewer big plays) than more mistakes (even if he makes more big plays). That's more or less what's going on here. You can see Zimmer pushing in his comments for Maualuga, who's a better fit in Zimmer's aggressive, downhill schemes. But they aren't going to make the move until they're certain that Maualuga won't be responsible for one or more long rushing gains a game because he's overrun his gap to try and make the big play.

:lmao: That's precisely what Lewis did in Washington in 2002 with an equally undisciplined and perhaps even more talented Lavar Arrington. He simplified his responsibilities, in Arrington's case by simply turning him into an almost-full time pass rusher.

I've got Maualuga sitting on my dynasty bench too but I definitely know what's going on here.

So he will work as mlb in some formations. And slb in the base formations? Is this why he was projected by Norton in the 80 solo range for the year?

As it stands, it appears that he'll be the base SLB only. On base 4-3 downs, it'll probably again be Maualuga/Jones/Rivers, with Jones and BrJohnson in the nickel and Michael Johnson as a roving nickel rusher. Not to speak entirely for Norton, but I'm sure he and I are on the same page here. We saw Zimmer say Maualuga was ready to move inside and give him reps there during OTAs while moving MiJohnson to SLB. On top of last season's comments that Maualuga was seen by the coaches as the future MLB, it seemed reasonable to highlight him as the potential base MLB with upside. Maualuga will drop a bit in my next rankings update. Norton may still feel that the change is coming and be resistant to dropping his projection until after the second or third preseason game plays out.

Q: What did you think of Rey Maualuga, with a lot of snaps at middle linebacker?

ML: “He played probably more in the game than the snaps he had recently in practice. He handled the whole week and did pretty well. Linebacker is linebacker, I think you guys make too much business of what the names are and so forth. If I see SAM (strong-side outside) linebacker one more time, I will throw up (laughs).

“It’s an outside linebacker, it just doesn’t matter what it is. I can’t tell you whether it is strong or weak. It is all based on set, formation and defensive call. It’s really not a big deal.”

Q: Is middle different than outside?

ML: “Not necessarily, I think you will see Dhani (Jones) play outside linebacker. He has lined up and played at outside linebacker in practice. Obviously, Rey has moved in. All the young guys, all the backup players are prepared to play all three linebacker spots. It’s really not a big difference; it is based on how you coach the guys. We have one linebacker coach, they all get coached the same. They all go through the same techniques all the time, the same keys and reads and understandings. So, we it is hard to differentiate like that. You only have so many guys dressed on Sundays, so they better be ready to play based on what happens in the game.”

Aside from actually seeing Maualuga at MLB with the second team in both preseason games, I don't think there's anything new here. Maualuga has said he's still getting used to the middle and I don't think the team makes the move until they're certain that Johnson and Maualuga will be where they're supposed to be on every snap. Zimmer hinted that there might be certain packages where Maualuga is the middle linebacker, but they aren't likely to be showcased during the preseason and I haven't seen any of the beat writers comment on seeing anything during practice.Still in a patiently expectant holding pattern here.

Anything new with this whole situation? I ask because I have Dhani Jones as a starting linebacker and I'm curious to know if his spot has been taken yet. Also, I have Mike Peterson and I'm not sure if he's still gonna be a every down back...any info on any situation?
