Rice cut by Ravens (1 Viewer)

I don't think people are paying attention if they think his career is over.

My guess is he will get an open ended suspension (ala Greg Williams) and after going through counseling, the suspension will be lifted after one year and next summer he will be on some other teams training camp roster.
100% agree.

He has to do the mea culpa tour. Once he does that, the story becomes "he's turned his life around" and he'll start developing allies in the league and media again and he'll get back on a team.

No chance he's finished. He's on a team's camp roster next year.
I think he's done from a PR standpoint, but it's easier to take that position given his 272 touches and 3.61 yards per touch in 2013.
Maybe. Guys have done worse. I think most people would have written off Vick after pictures of those dogs started leaking out.

Sadly, this is in some ways a PR game at this point. It depends on how badly he wants back in. If he's willing to grovel for a year, do charity/advocate work, find religion, take counsel with Tony Dungy, or whatever BS his people have him do to try and turn his image around, then he will 100% have people who stake out the "he's changed his life, he deserves a second chance" position.

The first step will be his statement. I'm sure it'll be something along the lines of "I'm truly sorry, I accept the punishment of the NFL and I look forward to changing my life around and proving to everyone I'm deserving of a second chance" blah blah blah.

Then, they'll let things cool down a bit and give someone an interview on one of the Sunday preshows where he breaks down on camera.
Here's hoping you're dead wrong.

Good job, Ravens.

However, do you think a team will pick him up?
No way. He's a (rightfully) pariah now. No one is going to touch him this season... possibly ever.
That's what they said about Vick.
If there were video of Vick lynching dogs, he'd be dead by now.
Does the video change the fact of what happened? What did you think a KO of a woman by an NFL player looked like? Not what the video shown?

Funny everyone knew he punched her, but now the video is out, they get up in arms again.

No double jeopardy in society.
Exactly. It shouldn't have had to come to the video footage to get to this point.

He should have been cut and suspended indefinitely as soon as this happened and he admitted it.

Makes you wonder if Rice would still be under contract if the NFL and a compliant Rice arranged for a release of this video and say, a 1-year suspension. Can't deny the politics/optics of a weak punishment followed by the release of this second video.
If Goodell gave in 8 games to a year I think this doesnt blow up like this . In the end Goodell's 2 game suspension screwed Rice

If they had gotten out in front of it, sure.

Control the bad news, and control it early. If they had done this in June, when casual fans don't care, he would never have been cut.

So, two games for the wife beating, and the rest of his career for getting caught on tape. Sadly, par for the course.

Well done Ravens, IMO. NFL not so much...

I completely agree. The second question is: will it end up screwing Goodell too?

Don't understand the "well done, Ravens" sentiment. They likely released him only due to the anticipated pressure following the video release, not the incident themselves. As mentioned, have to think they saw the video already.

Why are the Ravens' actions any different?
They're the ones that actually cut him -- NFL left it at two games. Yeah, it would have been nice if the Ravens had acted earlier, but still, how many teams actually cut contributing players for off-field stuff? Not to many that I can recall.

Yes.

They were quite content to let him back on the team, even with there being video of one of their marquee names dragging an unconscious woman out of an elevator.

The NFL and Ravens were both taken aback by the public reaction, and the VOLUME of the reaction. With Twitter, every voice counts now.

She might want to spend the night at a friend's place tonight. Ray is gonna be pissed. His career is over.
I'm betting she's at least as pissed at TMZ as he is. You think he's pissed? She stayed with a woman beater -- one who apparently spits in hotel lobbies, nonetheless -- and now he's also unemployed because they released that vid.

You get a "Well Done" when you do the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing, not when you change your mind once you find out which way the wind is blowing.

Sure, the money train is gone so she's going to be pissed too. I can't think of any other reason why she stayed with him.

The Ravens are a joke. They knew what he did--seeing the video or not. Now their just saving face.

Don't get me wrong--he should be cut, but it shouldn't have been dependent on the first part of the video.
NFL is the joke here imo. Ravens released him, now the NFL dog piles on the rabbit and suspends him indefinitely.
I agree.
Total joke. Players salaries become guaranteed for the season if they are on the roster week 1. It's no surprise the video wasn't leaked until after week 1, now the ######## gets paid and the NFL looks like they are being tough on domestic violence. Win/Win for both parties.

Beat your wife on video--we'll let the NFL make the call. Beat your wife on video and it gets released--we don't want you on our team.

Sad all of the way around....Sad he loses his career...Sad he knocked out a woman....Sad the woman married him...Sad the domestic abuse rate is so high among African Americans.....Sad the lack of education that typically leads to domestic abuse....Sad some of you guys are wanting to be his executioner....

This actually has the chance to do some good. With only a two game suspension, it sent the message--beat up a woman and no worries. This sends a strong message not just to the league, but to society, that his kind of behavior is serious and wrong.

Yes, it is too bad that the only reason he is facing the music is the video. Still, the broader message is entering the public awareness.

This is false actually. Since Rice was suspended, he gets nothing.

Andrew Brandt @adbrandt
Ray Rice is NOT entitled to 2014 salary as a vested veteran. Must be on 53-man roster at season start; he was on the suspended list.

That the NFL somehow has a wink-wink agreement to give Rice one last payday.

Yes. He rightfully deserves punishment. Making him a pariah and taking away his job, along with literally millions of dollars, is not in line with the offense.
It's a public relations league. He's one of the faces of a franchise. If I were in the news in a video knocking out my wife, I'd be fired by my job in about ten seconds, and I'm not the face of the law firm.

Rice was paid 25 mill over the last two years. For that kind of money, you don't get to embarrass the team, SORRY!!

Absolutely. They vilify Ray Rice without hurting Rice's wife in the process.

To some extent, I agree. But I'd say that the vast majority of NFL teams probably weather the storm and keep the guy around. The "well done" is more relative to the league as a whole, and to other teams that are trotting out guys every bit as despicable as Rice every week.

dude just lost 3.5m this year --- wonder if they come after him for some of that bonus money back.

how are the ravens making this work with their cap??

I'll be looking fwd to the overthecap article on this.

Good posting and let's not think for one minute that any other NFL team would have handled it any differently. The Ravens really had no other choice but to release him.

All of this was caused by Rice hitting the her in first place and if ever wants to play again he is going to have to do a lot of PR work: Go on TV with his wife and have a tearful apology and even better if he was witness to this kind of behavior as a kid. Then join an anger management class, volunteer/donate to women's shelters, etc.

America loves to see celebrities knocked down and then beg for forgiveness.

If he wants back in the league then he has to do a lot of PR

Killing men while drunk driving, allowed back in the league.

Punch a woman, and get banned from the NFL and should receive death.
######ed, isn't it? It's all about how much info about a situation that can be kept in the closet
Let me be clear, Ray Rice is a doosh, he deserved a stiffer penalty. Problem is I believe in due process. He was already punished for his infraction/mistake/crime, now he is punished again because people saw what they already knew. He shouldnt be punished further.

Self righteousness on this topic is through the roof.
This.

His punishment should have been stiffer from the start, but this is too far now.

Too far? In a just world, Rice is spending the season in prison, not on his couch.

You serious or just a clown?? If your serious about a man punching a woman and thinks this punishment is "absurd" go get your head examined!!!
Loss of your job (likely permanently) and multi-millions of dollars lost is simply not in line with the offense.
Of course it is. It just so happens that his job pays a lot more than most. And he did this to himself unless you are blaming her for him having to do this.

He apparently told teammates that he was in the midst of defending himself, and out of anger/frustration/retaliation, punched her to get her off him, and she it her head on the way down. It is being speculated he told the NFL the same thing.

Based on that story, he was only given two games suspension.

Yes, the video changes all of that.

What if he had kiddie porn on his computer?

PR is important in the NFL.

There's a poll on the Baltimore Sun website now. 49% think Rice should have been cut, and 47% think he should not have. About 3500 votes when I last looked.

There are some pretty moronic comments on their latest article on Rice, also.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/ravens-insider/bal-new-video-released-of-ray-rice-incident-20140908,0,1244291.story

so now nobody will report abuse becaause of the loss of millions of dollars

you morons will now get abuse in private
