Rick Spielman should be fired (1 Viewer)

1, ...Unbelievable this kid got his MBA and Masters in 4 years of college while playing football.
That speaks both to his smarts and his work ethic. For a non-football player to progress that rapidly is impressive, but Ponder did it while also carrying the workload of a starting QB at a major program. Like I said before there is a lot to like about this kid.

I keep hearing comparisons to Pennington in accuracy, but lack of arm strength.

IIRC Pennington was often injured. Assuming Ponder can stay healthy, is a 'Pennington' comparison a good thing?

I didn't realize Trent Dilfer's putrid accuracy with his QB analysis until this thread. After realizing that and having Dilfer bash Ponder, I'm suddenly optimistic.

Gimmie the kool-aid! As I really don't have a choice anyhow. :banned:

I think way too much is being made of the arm strength based on the elbow and shoulder issues last season. Sounds like he threw the ball very well as a jr. and also during his pro day before the draft.

Packer fans like seeing Vikings fans panic, but I think he has drafted pretty well the last few years.

Give it a little time and go after McNabb would be my suggestion.

I think Ponder went a little early but he was rising on the draft boards and he had done really well in workouts with a couple teams and the Vikings knew that he wasnt going to be there past #16 as the Redskins loved him. So they tried to move back a couple spots but could not get a taker so they picked their guy. Yes I would have rather had Fairley but I think Ponder could do really well. I think the Vikings have done a great job getting Rudolph, Ballard, and Burton all later than where they were predicted to go and in the cases of Ballard and Burton a full 2 rounds after they were projected so if you are going to blast him for taking a guy a little early then you got to give him credit for getting great value on his next couple of picks.
Why do people assume this? A lot of highly ranked players were falling. So how in the world can you assume that a top 40 prospect wouldn't make it past #16? Most people thought that Prince would be gone before #13, but surely he wouldn't have made it past #13. But yet he did. I think he (Ponder) probably would have been available in the late 1st. I can't know for sure of course. Just like you can't be sure about him going at #16.

Exactly. Look no further than Ryan Mallett. Who expected him to slip as far as he did?

What is this man thinking? Christian Ponder? Really? The pick at that slot was Robert Quinn or Prince Amukamara. The Vikings could have gotten any number of veterans during FA. However, the Vikings panicked when Jacksonville traded up to take Gabbert. Instead of keeping a cool head (isn't that what these guys get paid to do?) they reached. Not only did they reach, but they didn't even reach for the best available QB. That title belongs to Ryan Mallett. They didn't even reach for the raw QB with the biggest set of intangibles. That title belongs to Colin Kaepernick. They didn't even reach for a mediocre talent that was rated higher than Ponder on almost everyone's draft board. That title belongs to Andy Dalton. No, they reach for a guy that they could have had in day 2 or at the very least at the end of round 1. Even if Ponder was the #1 rated remaining QB on Minnesota's board, the whole world knows that he isn't the #1 rated QB remaining on virtually any other teams board. Why not trade down? Why not make a deal with NE or STL or whoever and take Ponder 5-15 picks lower? That's called getting value Spielman (although there is very little value to be had when you're draft Ponder inside the top 20). I've put the coal in the engine and I'm starting the "Fire Rick Spielman train". CHOO-MOTHER-*******-CHOO! Who's with me?
You must of cried when the FAVRE train left MINNESOTA

2011 draft looking pretty good so far.And :hey: about Ponder.
Same here, but it's too early to tell. We could have had Dalton here. However, typically the triumvirate has pretty good early selections. It's not like we got late round guys becoming the next Tramon Williams. My biggest issue is how in the hell do you publicly identify yourself as a power run team and come in with that offensive line. I mean Charlie fckung Johnson!? REALLY!? It's not just the starters either. They came in with terrible backups a season after a lack of depth had Favre getting nailed every play and AD being hit behind the LoS more than any other RB. The same can be said for NT, CB, and WR1. These were all previous problems that they just didn't address.

With all respect to Dalton, I doubt whether he have produced any better than Ponder as a Viking. If these guy were drafted by opposite teams I wonder if Ponder would be getting all the love right now.
