RIP Adam Carolla Show (1 Viewer)

So the smartest man in radio is now going off the air due to a format change of KSLX in Los Angeles.

Hopefully he pops up on the radio somewhere soon. If you haven't, go see his movie The Hammer, it's quite good.

RIP

Best, smartest show on morning radio. I thought they really hit a groove when they fired Danny Bonaduce, with Adam acting as a blowhard and Teresa steadying the ship with her calming voice of reason. They will be missed.

Prediction: the radio station dies a slow ratings death and ends up changing formats again within 9 months.

That sucks. Adam sounds like he'll move on to something else, gotta think FHF and Leykis will land somewhere else in L.A.

Fixed. KSLX = Phoenix, apparently having dyslexia while attempting to abbreviate "Classics". :kicksrock:

Sucks. It seemed 60 percent of the time it was commercials or music here. Mostly music while his show was supposed to be on. I figured they couldn't sell the time. I think adam is doing that car show on tv though

BTW when I found out that Bald Bryan was poising himself as the third host, I was welcoming the return of Bonaduce. Seriously, Bryan is not a radio personality.

I'm sure Howard Stern will try and spin this as further proof of the death of terrestrial radio... the same week Sirius XM nearly went bankrupt. If not for Liberty swooping in, we could have seen Stern coming back to regular radio.

No problem. I used to listen to KSLX. Always thought it weird that they're the "Classic Rock" station, yet KSLX wasn't quite the abbreviation for "Classics" ("KISS Licks"???). Then I heard about the LA station. I guess KLSX used to be a classic rock format. :loco:

Adam Carolla Show Cancelled? Here’s the Scoop

Adam Carolla, the radio personality whose “Adam Carolla Show” program took the timeslot once held by Howard Stern on CBS Radio, has lost his job.

Update (Thursday, 2/19): CBS Radio has now officially confirmed all of the information reported here. KLSX will change to “AMP RADIO” this Friday, February 20, at 5 p.m. The new format is described as “playing all the hits.” Friday will mark the final broadcasts for Adam Carolla, Tom Leykis, and Frosty, Heidi, and Frank. Thus far, none of them has discussed their plans for the future.

Earlier in the week, multiple sources had corroborated reports that Carolla’s radio show had been cancelled and that Carolla had been let go. Some rumors correctly suggested his home station, Los Angeles’s 97.1 KLSX, was preparing to switch from its current talk format to a more top-40-style format. Other speculation correctly suggested the change would leave KLSX personality Tom Leykis out of a job as well.

As for the format shift, radio gossip site RadioInsight first discovered that the domains AmpRadioLA.com, Amp971.com, and Amp971fm.com were all registered anonymously on February 9. Additionally, AmpRadio971.com and 971AmpRadio.com were registered in the name of programming consultant Anthony Acampora about a month ago. (Amp Radio is evidently a youth-oriented format that’s been used in other markets.)

Carolla, interestingly, signed a “multiyear extension” for his “Adam Carolla Show” program at the end of 2007. A CBS Radio exec said at the time that the show had “far exceeded [CBS's] expectations and proven to be a listener favorite,” even adding that he “anticipate[d] even more success for the program in the years to come.”

Adam Carolla Show Cancelled; Is Radio A Doomed Business?

Here's another nail in the coffin of terrestrial talk radio. It was announced late yesterday that Adam Carolla, who replaced Howard Stern on the west coast, has been fired. His home station in Los Angeles is switching formats away from talk.

The slow death of radio mainstays--Carolla has been on the air since the mid-90s, starting as host of the syndicated show Loveline--has led to cries from some that a whole type of business is dying while no one tries to save it. See my previous post here.

Carolla has won fans since his days on Loveline for his anti-radio radio personality: he doesn't have the mellifluous or bassy voices of most broadcasters, and his specialty is long, unscripted, often off-the-cuff rants.

Some might point to Carolla's demise as further evidence that it is impossible for independent voices to thrive on radio. That might be true of terrestrial radio. But, as I blogged about last month, this is a sign of progress, not regress, for broadcasting entrepreneurs.

Audiences aren't abandoning the idea of radio. They're abandoning this format. That's not necessarily a bad thing for people interested in talking to large audiences. The Internet is becoming the great equalizer. You don't need an expensive license and millions of dollars in broadcasting equipment. You just need to start and publicize your own podcast.

The question for entrepreneurs now is--how do you monetize podcasts and their millions of listeners?

Here's hoping that Carolla makes a comeback--not to the airwaves, but to the web, as a podcaster.

Corrolla and Leykis have ratings through the roof! I think Leykis's contract runs through 2012!

WTF? They are gonna end up losing their #### (the station). Advertisers aren't gonna flock to ANOTHER top 40 station in the LA market!

I am very annoyed by this.

I am not in the LA market, but I can't imagine that it really needs another Top 40 station. Hell, the world doesn't need another Top 40 station.

Exactly. There is simply no way they will be able to recoup the losses from buying out the contracts of Leykis, Carolla and the others.Ironically, this will end up costing them twice as much in the long run because they'll have to hire new hosts in a year anyway.Meanwhile, Leykis will find a syndication deal somewhere else.

I don't even think I could name one song in the Top 40
I am sure I couldn't.
I had to have somebody tell me who Rhianna (?) and Chris Brown were.
Look, I am not going to play Who is More Out of Touch with Crappy Music? with you.I knew who she was because my wife leaves People magazine in the bathroom.

Bummed about this. Our local a.m. sports station just decided to give up its affiliation to Fox Sports, and now its morning show is identical to its sister station, which is just horrible local stuff. Why they need two stations broadcasting the same garbage is incomprehensible. Anyway, because of that, Carolla was the only decent thing to listen to in the morning.

I'm going to have to start going with podcasts for morning drives.

Wow, this totally sucks. I will follow Carolla to wherever he ends up.
sounds like he's done doing a radio show. he's getting paid through 2009, and wants to do another movie and has some other stuff he wants to do.
That's too bad because I think he is best suited for radio (he certainly has a face for radio). I did think The Hammer was an unheralded gem however.

Agreed!A smart program director would grab him, Leykis and the rest of those on air personalities and take that whole market!Leykis has locked up males 18-39 in a huge way for afternoons and i believe Corolla is number 1 in his demographic for mornings as well.I wouldn't be surprised to find Leykis on satellite some time soon if no smart station picks him up. Corolla and Leykis with no language filter would be over the top!!

I listened to the show this morning...he was actually pretty pragmatic about the whole thing, and said it was probably the right economic decision for CBS, and that everyone was fine with him disclosing what happened on the air. They weren't even close to #1 in LA (he said the best they did was top 5, but that exceeded expectations). He and Teresa Strasser were joking about getting performance bonus checks at the end of 2008 and then getting canned within 2 months. He's now achieved his lifelong dream of getting paid to sit at home and do nothing.

I've never heard his show being on the East Coast, but I was always pulling for him to succeed (and bitter that the West got Carolla and we were stuck with David Lee Roth when Stern left).

Here's to hoping that Adam now surfaces on more Bill Simmons podcasts and/or Kimmel shows.

I'm interested to hear Leykis' show this afternoon!

I can't believe FHF have been on the air this long. The only radio show in history worse was the Jonathan Branmeyer show.

Danny Bonnaduce is trashing Carolla right now for announcing the format switch this morning.

The nerve.

That sucks. I listen to the show via the podcast so I am a day behind. The show gets me through my slow days staring at my monitor.

Need to find something else to occupy 4 hours of my day.

They are advertising the last shows webcast on their site. It's not a secret!Danny B makes me want to shove a pencil in my temple!!!

I'm listening via adamcarolla.com right now, and Adam just got through RAILING Jack Silver. Adam is getting his parting shots in.

Carolla just got on the air to set the record straight with Bonnaduce. Bonnaduce backtracked quicker than the French army. :lmao:

As expected! Bonadouchey is a windbag!

Carolla will be doing a 45 min. podcast from his home nightly. That is some light on this dark day....I have been listening to adam non-stop for nearly 9 years now. This is a sad sad day.

He loves doing radio, and I am sure he will bounce back, but changing format to top-40 is insane.

Listening to Adam Carolla for 9 years?..are you to cheap to buy satellite? WTF? Get a life
I own one. I listen to Alt Nation/Octane/Lithium daily.Carolla is better than anything on Satallite. Personal opinion...I was just trying to get the news to those who care.Obviously you are not one. So, got hit up the Howard Stern thread. This is for smart people that like intelligent comedy.

It looks like the Leykis got the blame for the station going down because the company was losing money and asked everyone to renegotiate their contract. Only person didn't agree to it, guess who? He signed a smart contract and will be getting paid through 2012 unless he wants to sign with someone else, in which case CBS will have to buyout his contract. I'll miss listening to him but can't blame him for getting paid for the next 4 years for doing nothing.
