I will always think of the 85 Bears, not the Eagles he coached
Covering for Chris Carter's off the field problems, "All he does is catch touchdown passes" is a great quote.
I'd forgotten that. One more reason to love and miss Buddy.RIP the guy who called for a fake kneel down vs. the Cowboys to run up the score in '87.
I can't believe you didn't mention that Meg Ryan is their sisterStill can't believe Paul Ryan and Rex Ryan are brothers.
While I give Buddy credit for getting the talent for the Eagles defense (although he inherited Reggie White and Wes Hopkins), that defense really wasn't great until 1991 under Bud Carson. Under Buddy the defense had lots of sacks and turnovers, but gave up way too many big plays. People were catching onto the 46 defense when he was with the Eagles. Also with the 68 Jets and the 70s Vikings. So he coached on 3 SB teams, 2 champions, and between the Vikes, Bears and Eagles 3 of the best defenses in the last 50 years. The Jets' miracle win in SBIII was a defensive victory as Ryan's defense got 5 turnovers from the NFL's best, the 13-1 Colts, it was one of the best SB defensive performances ever.
Great legacy, RIP.
Think it was even more damning than that. He was implying that Carter wasn't 'talented' (i.e., fast, athletic, elusive) and was only good as a red zone target. Clearly the wrong call there. That wasn't really covering for Carter, it was ripping him. He was saying that Carter didn't want to do any of the grunt stuff. Carter just wanted the glory. It was only later when Carter turned his life around and put in the work that the quote was used by Berman and others to praise Carter.
Eh, maybe...maybe not. Sports tend to go through an evolutionary process. Somebody will scheme a great D scheme...which will then be figured out. It's been that way since the dawn of footbaw. But those Bears defenses were just unstoppable. Nowadays, the league is becoming more and more offense-oriented - I don't think the we'll see anything like it ever again. RIP.
No, but the guy who came up with the 4-6 defense probably should be.Is he in the hall of fame

This is a very Gregg Williams story. Williams was mentored by Ryan and as a DC his defenses have often been the same kind of mixed blessing for head coaches. If Ditka had not antagonized Buddy during the Miami game in 1985, if he had asked him to stop blitzing Marino instead of screaming at him and showing him up in front of the players, I think Buddy would have adjusted his game plan, and the Bears would have pulled the game out, and gone undefeated for the season. Out of pride (and stubbornness), Buddy kept bringing the house and leaving poor Gary Fencik out there trying to cover Duper/Clayton/Moore all by himself.
And a mysterious random fog that rolled in just in time to save the Bears in 88.ProstheticRGK said:RIP, Coach. I'll always think of him as the coach of my best, beloved Eagles and the devastating Defense we had in his tenure. And how the only thing that stopped us from the Lombardi was Randall's knee.
And him completely punking Kevin Gilbride on the Oilers. Long may you wave!
It's hard to remember but the Eagles as I recall it had some bad luck in the playoffs under Ryan, especially as noted above that crazy fog game at Chicago. He turned them into winners, they canned him and then they waited another 2 years to win a playoff game anyway. And they replaced him with Rich Kotite.ProstheticRGK said:RIP, Coach. Landry was so PO'd he left the field without a handshake or even acknowledging Buddy.Running up the score on Tom Landry with a fake kneel down and pass makes him a legend. RIP
