For seven seasons (1981 to 1987), he played at the defensive end and defensive tackle positions in the National Football League with the Dallas Cowboys. Born Donald Frederick Smerek, he was raised in Nevada where he attended Basic High School and distinguished himself on the football field when he achieved all-state status. He played collegiate football at the University of Nevada, prior to being signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a non-drafted free agent in 1981. He went on to total 69 career regular season NFL games.
