Have you taken a family road trip? How far did you go, how old were your kids, and what was the experience like?

Yes several times

Detroit to Tennessee several times and Detroit to Delaware/philly

Make sure to entertain the kids and split it up some if possible (I.e. Leave late one night, grab a hotel and finish the drive next day or even find something to do in that area for a day then move on to the final destination)

Impossible to go straight through (15-16 hours)? Like leaving at 7pm, kid sleeps 8-5/6ish... Breakfast, then finish it out.

Maybe. How many kids? How old?

Personally I don't like driving that long that late at night, but if that works for you give it a shot

Absolutely nearly criminally stupid to drive over night with your entire family in the car unless there's a very good reason.

Boston to FL.

Boston to CA.

MN to FL.

MN to NV.

MN to Boston via Canada.

Done those with infants and toddlers. Gotta take it slow, like 5 hours of driving max per day, but they were all memorable trips. Towed our little camper behind us and stayed in state parks.

Drove to Myrtle Beach two years ago and the Outer Banks last year. My son was fine on both occasions. We stopped over night both times on the way there but drove all the way thru on the way home. 12 hours and 10 hours

Spent nine days in Phoenix last summer for a baseball tournament. I drove home, 16.5 hours straight through with my wife and two teenage children. About halfway thru it got weird, then surreal, then I think I started to hallucinate. The last three hours were spent singing campfire songs...or so I thought. My son says it never happened. I believe him.

We do it constantly. 3 kids, now 12,11,8 (youngest is a girl). Wife doesn't like to fly; and with 5 it gets expensive to fly especially when you add a rental van.

We live in DC, and my folks are in Boston and wife's are in Green Bay. We also have done numerous trips down to FL.

We try to leave on the early side, if possible, and just them pile into the van in PJs with the idea of changing when we stop for breakfast. The fact that I am unable to drive (seizures) throws a wrench into this, since Mrs. E has to drive the whole way. On our trips out to GB (~900 miles), we usually plan on an overnite stop (usually east of Chicago); when we do this, we don't make a reservation, since we don't know how far we are going to get before needing to stop; traffic, weather, etc. affect distance. Sometimes, going west in the summer, we can make it without stopping, since the extra daylight, helped by the timezone change, makes the distance easier.

The object is to keep the kids occupied. On trips during school vacations, each of them has an iPod Touch, a simple Kindle and a DS which allows them to play games and watch videos. I have set the van up to allow for charging of devices. If we take a break during school, like December 2014 to WDW, we try to get their teachers to provide schoolwork they would be missing during the trip. They are told to complete as much as possible during the drive, so we don't have to mess with vacation time doing schoolwork!

In general it works for us, since they really have not done major travel any other way. We have taken the train to Chicago a couple times and flown to Boston, but 99% of the time we drive.

The true test will come this summer when we do a ~5 week, 7500 mile trip around the country. Will be starting a thread about this shortly to get recommendations on places to go, eat, etc.

I guess it all depends on what the OP is looking to do. As many have stated here, yea, you can leave early, drive for like 12 hours a day and make good distance.

For me, I would just prefer to fly if the goal is to get somewhere as fast as possible.

We are planning a Mpls to Boston and back road trip right now for the summer. We will take 5 days to get out there. Camp at State parks in WI, MI, OH, NY on the way. Spend 4 days with family in Boston, then head up to a cabin Maine for 4 days.

Gonna cross over into Canada on the way back and take 5 days to trek our way back home. Entering back into the US in the UP of Northern MI.

We have a 1.5 and 3.5 year old and a dog, so it forces us to stop often and see the country. We tow our 13 foot Boler camper.https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/greenandreabean/5349623109/

Also

When I was a kid, we did a 42 night trip between Wyoming and Alaska, and all points between. I was 11, my brother was 8. No video games or movies either.

We did a lot of other trips too - WY to Maine, WY to FL, etc.

As an adult, I have driven my kids (ages 3, 8, and 3 mos.) between Charlotte and Yellowstone (~30 hours of road time), as well as Charlotte to southwest FL many times (14 hours), and Charlotte to NH a couple of times as well. I will be making the FL trip again with the kids again this week.

We only did the 14 hour trip straight thru once, and it was hell. Breaking it up into 8 hours at a time is manageable. It also helps to have movies available - a hell of a lot nicer then when I was a kid.
