Saw the Oakland/San Diego game last night, and Gallery was just getting mauled. I haven't been following Oaklands line very well over the last two years, but I do remember that Gallery was touted as an absolute "sure thing" and one of the best LT prospects in years. Oakland homers or others that are in the know, what happened last night? Is Gallery a stiff, or was it just an aberration going against San Diego's exemplary pass rush?

He played RT at Iowa didn't he? I know there was a lot of hype with him being a so called 'true left tackle' and I think most of that was just speculation. Didn't he also start out on the right side for Oakland? I think everyone looked at his skill set and thought, 'This kid would make a monster left tackle', and it just escalated from there.

I won't put him in the "Tony Mandarich" category just yet but you had to know something was up when they draft him as 'the left tackle of the future' and the once he gets into camp, immediately move him to right tackle.

Sure, Shawne Merriman is an animal and would make a lot of left tackles looks back but I don't think Gallery has matured and developed like he should have. I blame it on poor coaching in the previsous coaching system and Art Shell looked clueless on the sidelines.

Both. Robert Mandarich has played like a 7th rounder since being drafted and Merriman might be the best defensive player in football right now.

I could be wrong, but I think that he got shifted from RT to LT this season after playing his whole career on the Right side...

Nope he played LT in college and was shifted to RT the last two years b/c he couldn't beat out the turnstyle that was Barry Sims.

Ok looked it up and he played TE/RT in his first year then moved to LT for the rest of his time at Iowa. Sure doesn't look like it!

He doesn't have great lateral quickness, so he struggles against fast outside rushers. He happened to be up against Merriman and Phillips last night -- two of the fastest rushers he'll see all year. So I don't think he'll always look that bad.

That said, he has looked bad since coming into the league. I don't know why he made several all-rookie teams at RT over Shane Olivea two years ago. It was based entirely on draft position and pre-NFL reputation, I guess.

He does have good upper-body strength and can handle bull rushers just fine.

With Raiders fan's luck he will be cut or traded, go somewhere else and turn into a beast O-lineman for years......

Can you say bust?

Bust Bust Bust.

Gallery looks like a real football player, but his technique is terrible. Instead of using those long arms to keep rushers at bay, he lets them get into his body where they either run around him or spin move.

This kid has no idea how to use the physical tools he was blessed with. Part of that is the coaching, part of it is crappy work ethic.

Remember laughing when Gallery was being touted as the top offensive lineman in his class - ahead of Shawn "Hurricane" Andrews. Andrews was a Pro Bowl alternate in his first full season with the Eagles. Yes, he's a guard and Gallery is a tackle....but still.

The guy looked terrible all preseason and week 1 was just keeping pace. This has a small thread or two out there (one may be in IDP). I think the guy is looking like a bust. People are mentioning RT and LT, but I believe he has played some guard too in his time. That's actually the safest spot for him, but you do not pick a guard that high and pay him that kind of money. So, he is basically being forced out to LT based on why they drafted him. But, he has not earned that starting spot. It was given to him and unless Shell gets his head on straight and decides to play his best lineman in the places that give him the best chance to win Brooks will be running for his life all year and Jordan will average 2.5 per carry.

I watched him a lot in college, and he was unstoppable. He didn't need good technique to dominate, and I think that's coming back to bite him in the ###. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a work ethic thing, as I remember him being a good guy off the field.

He needed to go out and hire Anthony Muñoz and have him as his personal trainer. He has all the physical tools he just needs to be taught the right techinque.

If Gallery was drafted by a different team, with better coaching he might be a slightly better player. He was drafted as lock to be the starting LT, but as previously mentioned his technique wasn't there yet and he couldn't handle speed rushers. So the coaching staff tried him at guard for a short time while Barry "The Matador" Sims played LT. Then Norv Turners staff moved him to RT where he played OK, probably where he should be playing now. Problem is Shell, Slater and Eatman think they can "fix" him with all their years of experience and move back to LT probably at Al Davis' request and its not working out.

Unfortunately for him, the only thing that Robert Gallery will be remembered for will be that he got drafted by the Beloved Silver and Black, when we could have had Larry Fitzgerald. :wall:

I pointed this out in one of the other threads, but I don't remember which one.

Watching Merriman o\/\/n Gallery was special because the Chargers passed on Gallery in order to do a trade that netted them Merriman (along with Rivers, Kaeding, and Oben). A lot of people, including me, wanted the Chargers to draft Gallery that year. But in hindsight I'm pretty happy with Merriman instead -- not to mention Rivers and Kaeding as bonuses.

Heck, if they wanted, they could have had Leinart throwing to Fitzgerald.

Actually, one of the knocks against him is that he has relatively short arms for his size. I remember that coming out when he was in his senior year. And as MT mentioned earlier, he doesn't have the best lateral movement and has difficulty with speed rushers. Not good Lateral Movement + Short Arms = BAD Left Tackle in the NFL

It looked to me like Merriman bull rushed Gallery a few times last night.
He did, definitely. But I think it only worked because Merriman also has the ability to go around Gallery. On Merriman's second sack, for example, Merriman gave a quick fake inside before redirecting and running right through Gallery. I think the only reason Merriman was able to run through him was that Gallery was off balance because he had to respect the inside move. (Sort of like Jerry Rice could run past faster DBs by getting them off balance, Merriman was able to run over Gallery by getting him off balance.)

I think he's playing great. Leave the guy alone!Sincerely,

Tony Mandarich

Merriman will be destroying poor Kerry Collins this weekend.

New offensive scheme for Collins (I am sure he does not even know all the pages of the playbook yet)

No real running game threat considering how the Chargers shut everyone's running game down

3rd and long all day for the Titans

Nno mobility for Kerry Collins

Titans D will ensure they are down by at least 14 at half

Chargers D will be the pick for this weekend at defense. :football:

Gallery played well as a RG in his rookie season, but was then moved to RT where he started to struggle. The Raiders, sick of getting killed @ the LT w/ B.Sims (who's last good year was in their Super Bowl season) decided it was time to move their "franchise LT" into place. Only problem is that now he is going against the other teams' best pass rushers and due to coaching changes and poor coaching (thanks Big Gay AL!), Gallery hasn't improved a lick since his rookie season.
