Rockies sign Cuddyer 31 million for three years (1 Viewer)

This was looking inevitable, but I was really hoping the Twins would save the Rockies from themselves here. Basically they just paid 10M for a modest upgrade over the player they just gave away to the Phillies, Ty Wigginton.

so cuddy gets 10m a year, some people say he's note as good as a motivated Delmon Young, I guess Delmon is licking his chops on this news

Colorado is picking up half of Wigginton's $4M 2012 salary

Yep, and most were happy to see him go with 2M saved. Cuddyer is a better player, without question. He's a career 111 OPS+ hitter and has been above 120 three times including last year. Wigginton is a career 100 OPS+ hitter and only went above 120 in one season, in which he also only had 386 ABs. So modest upgrade is understating a little. Both are defensive liabilities regardless of where you play them. The nice thing about Cuddyer is that he offers flexibility in additional moves for the Rockies. If they move Seth Smith to address 2B or add more pitching, he can take over a regular outfield spot. If they keep Smith, he can platoon with him in the outfield and serve as a bridge to getting Arenado ready at Third. He can also help ease some of Helton's workload. It's a good fit, just not at 10M a year IMO.

Colorado is going to love him. I know a lot of Minnesota did. He an outstanding guy in the locker room because he's down to earth, super nice, loves to joke, plays any position without complaining, and battles through a lot of injuries. He was one of the few Twins that actually played through pain last season. He is a tremendous force in the community. Even when he wasn't making big money he was changing tons of lives. He's the kind of guy that I'd want as a utility player on a playoff bound team. Best wishes to Cuddy, one of the goodgreat guys of baseball.
