Lifting this from a Darren Rovell question:

In the battle between Roger Goodell and Jerry Jones, who are you rooting for?

Put 'em in an 'I Quit' match with Vince McMahon as the referee saying 'I didn't quite get that' repeatedly.

I voted "neither" even though my hatred of Goodell is greater than that of Jones.

This topic made me think of the GnR song "Get in the Ring."

I want them both to lose.  Which I guess is wanting Jones to win, because even if Jones wins, he still loses, because the Cowboys aren't winning anything this year.

Er, I think that makes sense.

I don't even like Jerry Jones, but what a gangster goodell is turning into....

"Report: NFL to fine Jerry Jones 'millions'

The New York Times reports commissioner Roger Goodell is planning to fine Cowboys owner Jerry Jones "millions of dollars" for conduct detrimental to the league.

That conduct was Jones' "efforts to derail negotiations to renew Goodell’s contract," as well as his "outspoken defense" of Ezekiel Elliott. Per reporter Ken Belson, Goodell has been "reluctant to be seen as exacting retribution for the way Jones tried to sabotage his contract talks," but was "urged to bring the penalties by several owners who believed that Jones had crossed an unspoken boundary by threatening his colleagues." Jones has indeed spent most of the past year publicly bellowing about the league's boss. Expect a torrent of lawsuits and recriminations to follow.

Countdown until goodell is calling for a military parade in his honor? JFC, this guy. Go back to "fixing" the catch rule..... that wasn't broken before you were anointed pope of the NFL.

You stopped bolding at the important part: but was "urged to bring the penalties by several owners who believed that Jones had crossed an unspoken boundary by threatening his colleagues."

Goodell does the owners' bidding. He's the public face who gets the honor of being paid tens of millions to be the guys the fans hate, when the owners are the ones calling the shots.

Of course he does.  He works for them.

Jones looks to have seriously overstepped here.  It’s been quite a while since he’s cared about anything more than his ego, his own holding and enriching himself above and beyond the league, and it looks like he’s finally painted himself into a corner where he can’t avoid getting curbstomped.

It's like watching a Cowboys-Giants game as an Eagles fan.

Can't they both lose?
ehh kind of. As an Eagles' fan, I think I would root for the Devil over Jerry Jones. Lots of dislike for that guy (but in somewhat of a good way, like a really good heel for Pro Wrestling). Always good when Jerry Jones is on the losing end

I guess I don't understand how one multi-billionaire owner "threatens" another multi-billionaire owner. "At the next owner meetings.... I'm a gonna bogart all that Grey Poupon and you'll be stuck with the French's the commoners are forced to use!" Just seems like retribution to me. Apparently this cabal of abused owners want to remain nameless and apparently don't actually want to make a single grievance known.... just as long as Sir Roger protects them.

And I think you stopped reading the bolded part where one of the reasons Jerra' is getting dinged millions is because of his "outspoken defense" of Ezekiel Elliott. You stick up for your players and it's now a multi-million $ fine? Well, it's America and you're my boss.... just don't be "outspoken" when defending your other employees.

And it's a really simple decision if you hate both of these guys. You root for Goodell. It might not be tomorrow, but at some point, he'll move on to something else and they'll bring in a new commish. Jones isn't going anywhere until he's in the ground.

Tip: Read the actual NYT article and not the garbage summary from Rotoworld. It will give a lot of the specifics that you seem to think weren't provided.

Ah, I haven't done that. I will before I comment further. I guess I assumed at least the important points were touched upon if there were some concrete reasons he was getting fined.

But if any owner is fined millions for defending a player on his team it had better be a very, very long read.

I don't think they care that he defended his player. They care that they racked up a ton of legal bills when Jones threatened to sue the NFL and individual owners over Goodell's contract negotiations because he was upset about his player being suspended. And his very public trashing of Goodell, other owners and the how the league was handling its business arguably damaged the brand and was certainly against the interests of the league as a whole (whether he was actually right or wrong).

the owners all love Goodell, until he pisses in their specific bowl of Cheerios.

then that owner hates him, while the rest of the owners laugh.

Based upon the article that you posted that Jones is going to get fined millions plus court costs.
Updating a previous item, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is not planning to fine Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

The New York Times reported Goodell planned to fine Jones "millions of dollars" for conduct detrimental to the league. Instead, Goodell is asking for a "reimbursement of costs incurred by member clubs" of "more than $2 million," and that the "resolution has been on the books for more than 20 years." The rest of the NFL owners also believed this would be Goodell's best approach to deal with Jones. It's a convoluted situation that will hopefully soon have more clarity.

Yeah, posted already and responded to above.

I can't really stomach either but Goodell is beyond likeable and I'm not sure he wants it any different.

The follow-up on this is that the NFL is looking for reimbursement from Jones of ALL of their legal fees related to the Ezekiel Elliot matter.

As much as I loathe Jones, that's just stupid. Unless the league has evidence that Jones was secretly funding Elliot's appeals (he wasn't, the NFLPA was), there is no reason he should be on the hook for those fees.

The Roger Goodell/Jerry Jones settlement: Jerry will pay just north $2 million in legal fees, "a small discount" on the nearly $2.5 million sought, two sources say. Goodell upholds the owners' punishment of Jones for his antics last fall; Jerry pays a bit less than the full tab.
