Rookie Scouting Portfolio (1 Viewer)

Nice work.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought Hagan could be good. :) It's his third year though and he could be starting, so you never know...

 Yep...I'm still holding out a bit of hope. He needs to stop dropping that ball or I'll have to admit that ridiculous gauntlet at the combine might have merit ;)

If Joe & David would just hire Matt Waldman, I'd never go to another fantasy football website. Please Please Please hire Matt.

I was blown away by the sheer content, let alone the valuable insight. This was worth so much more than I paid. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of work that went into this.

Just amazing, Matt. If you're not a scout for an NFL team in the next 5 years, I'll be amazed.

My stuff tends to deviate from the norm. Sometimes that's good, sometimes it's off. The thing that I believe is important is to have a firm opinion and explain it. I was reading the other day about Mark DeCosta who is heading up the Ravens personnel team. He mentioned that Ozzie Newsome wants his scouts to have strong opinions and not folks who say one thing, but try to cover their behind.

Every year I'll have some guys that I tout higher than others--Bradshaw/Selvin Young/Steve Smith/Trent Edwards, but I'll also have players who I strike out on and those players have been/could be folks like Charles Sharon, Bruce Gradkowski, and Derek Hagan.

But that's the fun of doing this and somewhat of the appeal. I'll give you compelling reasons to like or dislike players that differ and with enough reasons for you to see where you agree or disagree. And that's really the point of it all.

Hey Matt, quick question....I may have missed it in the initial introduction to the report....but your game film examples, how did you choose them? Was there any rhyme or reason to them or you just picked a game out of the hat to show as an example for analysis. TIA.

ETA....I absolutely love it, so much to go over.......so little time.

#1 on my 2007 FBG Offseason Wishlist and still #1 in 2008. Team this guy up with Sig, Pasquino, Cecil, etc. and we've got total dominance.

Sometimes there's rhyme and reason, sometimes not. For example: Ideally I want games with multiple attempts, carries, targets, catches (depending on the position). For instance, I gave Joseph Addai a score in the 90's in 2006 against an Auburn squad that had a top defense and he didn't crack 100 yards in the game but had ~20 attempts. So you can see stats don't matter. It's what he can or can't do according to my criteria. I've scored players very high who didn't average 4 ypc as an RB and scored them very low despite huge games (Tony Temple for example) on the stat sheet. If I can't find games with high opportunities for that player, then I shoot for games where they face quality competition. If I don't have that choice, then I just take whatever I can get my hands on. Right now I just record as many games as I can and try to get enough of a distribution of competition to get most of the top prospects. I'll miss a few players, but with the detail I go into for coverage, I'm not too concerned if I can't watch a Josh Johnson or Jordy Nelson if I can deliver quality on 122 other players. Since I now have a growing library of games, I can schedule my recording sessions with a bit more planning.Glad you like it. I think most people who see what I'm doing look at the price and think it must be like everything else out there but I'm trying to make dough. But when they actually see it, they realize that it's worth way more. They tell me this all the time. Probably my mistake with marketing the product out of the gate, but I'm persistent and I'll get it right. I know the product is quality ...

What notable players were not covered by the RSP?

Off the top of my head Jordy Nelson, Jerome Simpson, and Josh Johnson...

Jordy Nelson is the one that surprised me, not too high on him??Wildman- Great report! Great Value!

I drafted Bradshaw last year based on your information, so I invested in this years report.

Draftguys TV has two of these covered Simpson Johnson - we would have definitely covered Nelson if we had been allowed to use Senior Bowl footage...After reading the RSP I just hope I get a chance to watch tape with the Wildman at some point in the future...

Thanks...It wasn't a matter of not liking someone that I didn't cover them. It was opportunity to do so. I had an abbreviated game of Nelson's. While I gave notes at the end of the WR section in the '08 version, I didn't count him as someone I studied so I didn't rank him.

Yeah sure...if I don't feel comfy answering, then I won't. But I think there's enough info that I can stand to discuss some things on a small scale.

OK, Mike Hart one the WORST blockers??

I understand his small stature will hurt him more in the NFL than it did in college, but he showed so much effort in his blocking in every game I saw. And his technique was very good too. In the game I broke down against Penn State he absolutely stoned Dan Connor twice on a delayed blitz. Now granted that some scouts question Connor's ability to get through blocks, but it was still pretty impressive. I can see him not being best in class due to his size and maybe his lateral quickness in terms of sliding across the pocket quickly to get a blitzer. But one of the worst? Just seems crazy to me.

Of course I completely agree with your assessment on Johnson in that same category so I'm wondering what I'm missing.

I watched Hart against USC and he had a pretty bad game--misdiagnosing blocks, bad technique, etc. OSU in '06 he was good. So maybe he's more hit and miss, but his size and some of these technique issues put him on the list for me.

Fair enough, thanks!

Anytime. I love talking about this stuff. When you've spent as much time as I have observing, it's nice to discuss.

The outside the box thinking is critical to get a leg up in dynasty rookie drafts. I too grabbed Bradshaw and S Smith based on the grades given by Matt. Had to drop both of them during the year but was able to get Bradshaw back before he started his run.

My brother has the 1.01 in our dynasty league and I have to try and convince him not to take McFadden (I'm at 1.09 in our 10 team league so it won't affect me).

Thanks, Matt, for a quality effort!!!!

Just picked up the PFW book and they list blocking as a positive with Hart as well.

That's cool. Can't get them all right...of course, I read a past publication this morning that compared William Green to Marshall Faulk so...

Matt, Bloom and LamThat would rock. Great job Matt, I had to re-read the RB section a couple of times and again WOW.

(Put Bloom twice but you knew what I meant, LOL)

You know it could be a fun joint project to take 2-3 days and watching a few games.

-It might make an interesting magazine story (the FF phenomenon, growing popularity of the draft, Non-NFL types getting involved with a growing audience demand). I'd love to see if I could query a major newsstand publication to write it. Bloom and Cec do an excellent job with their work, but I'm sure an outsider would at first assume they are like a Wayne and Garth operation. This would be fun to dispel while profiling Draft Guys and the RSP as fun and fascinating examples of entrepreneurship.

-A podcast of our summaries on each player we critique after watching the game.

-At worst, I'd have fun writing about the weekend in an article. I'm sure these guys would, too.

I love the new player comparisons. Instead of each prospect being compared to a single player like in TSN mag (which are often pretty humorous because the comparison is odd to say the least), Matt uses a few players and more historic players, to get a better comparison of the player's style, and puts the prospect along a spectrum to really get a sense of what to expect from a prospect. Here are some examples:

Matt Ryan: Peyton Manning-Dan Fouts-Troy Aikman--X---Kerry Collins

Joe Flacco: Ben Roethlisberger--Daunte Culpepper-X-----Andrew Walter

Rashard Mendenhall: Terrell Davis---Ottis Anderson--X---Mike Anderson

Xavier Omon: William Andrews-Jamal Anderson---X/Earnest Byner---Lamar Smith/Gary Brown-Leroy Hoard

The "X" is the prospect and the more or less dashes between the prospect and players represents how close the prospect is to each side.

Hopefully I'm not giving too much away but I want you guys to get a sense of some of the great work here.

Nice job Matt!
