Router/Modem purchase help. (1 Viewer)

I'm moving to a new house and plan on getting TWC. Likely the 50 speed package.  I'm not well versed in this stuff but want to buy a good router and modem. Which should I buy? Price isn't really an issue. I just want something that works and easy to set up.  Will a router be in the combo as well and TWC compatible or will I need two seperate devices?

The link to what TWC allows:

I also have the nighthawk.  Phenomenal, handles everything I've thrown at it.

Netgear and Asus are always back and forth as the best WIFI routers. Can't go wrong with either brand. You don't have to get a separate modem and router, could go with a combo unit, but I've always bought a good broadband modem as a standalone unit and added in a strong 4 port WIFI router. If there's ever an issue can always isolate to the modem (eliminate the router).

Is the nighthawk a combo and ok by TWC? Model number? It's just called NightHawk?  What is the purpose of having two seperate? Is it better to just have a combo?

Excellent.  So this router will sync to the modem. What modem from the TWC website will work best with this night hawk.  Even if I'm only getting 30-50 speed?

nice, didn't know they updated it.  looks like the 6190 is the Bugatti.
Doesn't look like the 6190 is TWC compatible.

Right now I have an old router - Cisco probably 10-15 years old.

I'm also using the SB5100 (15 speed Motorola)

My speed currently is 15 and it was plenty for surfing internet but now with streaming I'm going to want 30-50 speed.

I need a serious retool of a good router and modem.

I was getting tired of the ####ty cable/router modem xfinity gave me + there's a steel beam that supports the levels in my house so if you wernt in a adjacent room you had no wifi. Went with the Linksys!

Linksys wrt1900acs

Was about to buy this thing for $200 new but found one on the cheap for $5

yes sir

Now that Gottabesweet made a decision, i dont feel like Im hijacking.

If you were paying for the fastest speed available, but didnt feel like you were getting it, would it be more likely your router or modem that should be replaced? Both are probably a decade old.

Both?

Make sure the modem is a docsys 3.0, make sure the router is at least an "n" and that if it's dual band your putting your slower devices on the same network.

hardwire directly to the modem and do a speed test, then try a speedtest using your router

also if you live in a busy/crowded neighborhood there will be tons of wifi traffic. everyone on the old G band chooses a channel (1-13 i think) for their wifi to broadcast and when there are so many people broadcasting on the same channel or neighboring channels the signals collide and collisions occur which results in data loss and latency. N band is definitely a huge improvement as it avoids that signal traffic (thousands of channels versus 13) and enhances transfer speed. also it grants +1 to e-peen

Buyer beware on those Arris Surfboard models.  I've had nothing but issues with the SB6141 with TWC.  Arris help was no help at all.  Signal from TWC was always good.  Tried a couple of different routers with it, it wouldn't send an IP to the router so they wouldn't sync.  Main issue was the modem would reboot itself and when it came back up synced with TWC, it wouldn't talk to the router (router couldn't pull an IP from DHCP).

Finally replaced it with a netgear modem and it has been up and running ever since.  Been several months now and no issues.

I'll never buy a SB again.  With that said, I know others haven't had issues... but many have.  Seems to be some lemons mixed it with those SB modems.

We have the Arris SBG6700AC combo. The devices on the 5 GHz band work fine, however the 2.4 GHz band is prone to stop broadcasting it's SSID causing all devices that aren't AC compatible to lose their connection. When that happens, I need to log into the router and disable broadcasting that band and than enable broadcasting of it. Becomes a real pain in the ###. Would not recommend this unit to anyone.

Bump...just informed by Comcast that my current modem (Motorola SB6120) is likely cause of my intermittent internet drops.  Also have a Linksys E3000 router, which was highend back in the day, but the day was so long ago, I don't remember when exactly that was.

So, checking in to see what is the latest and greatest modem wise, as well as if I need a router upgrade to boot?

Posted elsewhere, but in case it was missed several Netgear routers have been found to have a major flaw. CERT went as far to say don't use them. Patches coming.

Thanks for the heads up!

I had that router a while ago and pretty sure I put ddwrt on it which boosted its gains a bit. you still should replace it imo.

im currently running this modem bought used for $35

which router you choose depends on the coverage zone you want and price range

you could also look for a modem/router 2in1 device. some of those have mixed reviews though

Bump, as I have been a slacker and not taken the advice previously offered.  While my setup is still working, I get occassional drops, so this time, I am serious about replacement.

Just want to see if the information previously shared is still valid or there are updates to share?

I switched from TWC to Spectrum recently.  I went from 25/2.5 to 50/5 speed.  They switched me to an "Arris CM820A" modem.

I have a 2 story house and got tired of my wife b-tching about the WIFI connection upstairs so I also got the Google Wifi with 3 access points.  I highly recommend it but it was really expensive ($270).  I probably only needed a set of 2, but I couldn't find that option for sale for cheaper than the set of 3.

I've had this for about a month and I have 0 complaints.  My cable bill actually went down abut 50 bucks a month with Spectrum (must have been really overpaying with TWC).

In the past couple days, I’ve had to reset my router/modem to get the internet to work. Been happening more lately and usually have to reset it multiple times. Is this a sign the hardware is going bad or some other issue?

It’s most likely your ISP. When I had Fios by Verizon it rarely dropped. Now that it’s Frontier, it can average once a week. It could possibly be old equipment too, but most likely your ISP.
