Rowand signs with the Giants (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Giants agreed to terms with outfielder Aaron Rowand, who had been witht he Phillies, on a five-year contract.

The Giants were lucky last year when they missed out on Gary Matthews Jr. and Juan Pierre despite competitive offers. Still, no one really expected Brian Sabean to learn his lesson. Rowand gets a five-year deal at what's surely more than $10 million per season (probably at least $12 million) despite having just two particularly good seasons under his belt. He's a fine player even when he's posting 750 OPSs, but he's probably not going to age well because of the way he throws his body around and he's not the big-time middle-of-the-order threat the Giants needed. The team was already paying Randy Winn and Dave Roberts as if they were center fielders. Dec. 12 - 3:48 pm et

Moral of the story...parents...screw taking your kid to school, send them to the DR, and let them play baseball all day...

Nevertheless, I like Rowand, hopefully he is entering his prime years...

5 years?? Man they're going to be regretting that after 2. (maybe sooner)

Let's play the guessing game. I say 5 years, 70 million.

The Giants are an absolute mess. There offense's average age is about 46. Their bullpen stinks. They grossly overpaid for Barry Zito and now Rowand? This is one of the worst organizations in MLB. They are going to finish last in that division for quite some time.

I think its a good deal considering the market and the state of that offense. Is Torri Hunter 6 million a year better than him?

This is the world we live in and the reality of contract! Ron Mahay could get 3 years for 12 million! Emil Brown made 3.5 mil last year!

And don't forget Cesar Izturis is making a little under $3 mil!WHEEEE!! MONEY!!!

In ESPN the mag they were talking about some new stat that takes into account plays a guy should have made but weren't errors...the guy who came up with it apparently thought Jeter was overrated and this proved him right.

Anyone know where to find how Rowand stacks up compared to other CF's? I always thought he was average at best but people I know think he is good defensively. Sure he made plenty of diving catches but I always felt like many other guys wouldn't have had to dive for those balls.

5 years....yikes

It's another terrible deal by Sabean. Too much money and too many years for a guy who doesn't really fill a need area. The Giants already had two CFs. By the end of the contract, Rowand isn't likely to be producing at the level of an everyday player. With this move, the Giants have leapt from 5th place in the NL West to 5th place in the NL West. The only silver lining is that it apparently means the end of Lincecum-Rios rumors, although you never can be sure with the Giants front office. They may go out and sign Warren Cromartie and Lloyd Moseby next week.

Sabean's always had this sick fascination with awful outfielders... He was obsessed with Jose Cruz for about 4 years before they finally acquired him, the Randy Winn deal, Dave Roberts.... the list goes on and on.

Well, at least this means Tim is staying put unless something blows Sabean away.

But as was re-confirmed today he's an idiot. A ball of string would probably be enough.

thank god the Padres stayed away from this debacle. i think this is worse than the Hunter deal.

sorry Giants fans - what an awful model Sabean is using to put a team together up there. as someone else mentioned, the only redeeming aspect of the Rowand deal is that Sabean didn't deal Cain or Lincecum for Rios.

Does this mean that Victorino is now the CF in Philly? With Bourn traded, who else do they have in the OF besides Burrell?

Jayson Werth will play RF. Probably in a platoon with either Greg Dobbs or another left-handed OF bat that they may acquire.Victorino will be an upgrade defensively in CF over Rowand. He's got better range and a stronger arm. I believe a Werth/Dobbs platoon should be able to replace what Rowand gave us at the plate.

According to the quotes from Gillick in today's paper, Victorino will be the starting CF. Snotbubbles is right that Dobbs will probably be in the OF mix, but he also will probably have to play some 3B. Supposedly they have been talking to Geoff Jenkins, but he wants more money than they want to pay.

OK it's not a steal by any means but come on.

45 doubles

27 homers

Gold Glove

.309/.374/.515

It was a career year but not so far above lifetime .286/.343/.462 that it's a total fluke.

The Giants have nothing coming up from the minors. They can't afford to trade Cain or Lincecum or Lowry, underpriced starters who represent their only strength. Even with this move they still need a couple more bats just to have a bad offense.

So, they overpaid. That's almost the definition of any free agent signing, you have to outbid 31 other teams. Considering all the holes in their lineup, it seems to be the logical move. The annual amount is a lot less than Torii Hunter or Andruw Jones got, at least it gives them stability at CF so they can work on the other gaping holes at LF, 1B and 3B.

Rowand isn't a bad player but the Giants are paying for his next five years based on what's likely to end up as his career season. He's on the wrong side of 30 and his moving to a park that will hurt his power numbers. The $60M figure isn't as bad as the higher number originally reported. Rowand definitely improves the team. My biggest problem is that the move doesn't address the holes at 1B, LF, 3B and the heart of the batting order. The Giants have some money but need to spend it wisely. CF is a position where they have some options already. They've invested there during the past two off-seasons. Meanwhile, the CIF spots remain a disaster area. The Giants haven't had an above average offensive 1B since Will Clark and it's possible their 2008 3B will be a downgrade from Pedro Feliz, which is just pathetic. Their current lineup has Dave Roberts in LF and Molina in the cleanup slot. :football:

Difference is Andruw Jones signed a two year deal. With the way Aaron Rowand plays, he will be lucky to be decent the last 3 years of the deal. Like Andruw Jones, you sign Rowand dor 2 years, even at 17 mil a year, I don't have a problem with it. Five years, is ridiculous.

You dont think 20+ pts of BA, 30+ pts of OBP, and 50+ pts of SLG is "not so far above lifetime"?
