Roy Williams (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
We get it. You got a first down. Congratulations.

You don't need to do that STUPID little pointing routine like a 5 year-old.

In case you didn't notice, your team doesn't win all that often. Pointing after

catching a pass for a first down when you are trailing by 17 points doesn't work.

But at least he does his job. Oakland happens to have another talented receiver who doesn't care about anyone but himself, but HE lays down like a dog during games. I suppose Moss might also do something to draw attention to himself.... if he ever manages to catch a ball in the near future.

Funny that a Raider fan can't see the good in a WR playing with some energy. Maybe Roy Williams points after getting a first down because he CARES?

Unlike say Randy Moss.

Even losing teams need players with heart. Roy is a stud, I don't know what you're complaining about.

Im a huge roy fan.

I thought it was a little funny.

But at least someone is showing some emotion on the Lions. When was the last time someone on the Lions told the media they were good, or that they'd win a game? Im not sure what the Lions need is getting a first down, putting your head down, and moping back to the huddle.

Lions fans must think ROY is the only bright spot on this team. Maybe I'm wrong on that.

Read his whole post.

:goodposting: I'm not a big fan of Roy's act, but he's a rare Lion that actually produces. He can do the Macarena after every catch for all I care as long as he keeps hauling them in.

A clue. Please get one.Williams points because HE IS SELFISH! No way! A selfish athlete?!?!?! :o

Don't believe me? Well, take it from Roy himself.

The Lions are 2-6 at the halfway mark, and Roy Williams is convinced they should be 37-0. It's nothing against the rest of the NFL, but when the Lions play well, Williams thinks they should score a touchdown on every play. They should beat every team. They should star in every commercial.

I made all that up, except the 2-6 part. But you would believe Williams said it, wouldn't you? Williams doesn't just think the sky is always bright blue. He thinks it is always bright blue to honor the Lions.

When the Lions scored six points in an opening loss to Seattle, Williams said, "It was stupid how close we were to putting 40 points on the board."

He then guaranteed a victory over the Bears. The Lions proceeded to lose, 34-7. Williams gestured dramatically after a first down in that game anyway, then said he did it because "the score means nothing."
That's a team player right there!

I dont think Roy doing lame celebrations makes him selfish. He gives ultimate effort, unlike Randy Moss. Moss stating that his poor play is due to his unhappiness with the team is selfish. The guy makes millions of dollars, yet cannot get himself motivated to work for his paycheck = selfish. If his contract was performance based he would be making minimum wage. Roy is trying to motivate his team/fans even though it has been an awful season. To have that enthusiam even while the team is in the cellar is a rarety in the NFL. He can do what he wants IMO, because he is the only thing worth watching in Detroit.

No, no, no....It's more fun to bash without bothering to read everything I wrote.
I did read your post, and I was trying to point out the irony that you're complaining about Roy's energy when you wish that Randy actually gave a damn. In any case, you interpret Roy's actions as being selfish, while I (and it seems like the other posters here) interpret it as heart. So I don't think you're going to win this argument.

Score doesn't matter because you should be giving full effort on every play regardless of the score.

I have no problem with Roy juicing up after a catch. He is the best player on that team, a team leader to boot and ranks in the top 5 of WR in the league.

If he doesn't try to get the crowd and teammates into the game with some emotion, who should? Leaders lead by example, and I have no problem with the exclamation point after a catch when he is leading his team down the field.

I thought he looked like a total idiot when he did that.

:lmao: Me too. But its what gets his teammates fired up that matters. He is making the effort, which I personally applaud.I actually appreciate TO's "donation" this week too. Whatever works.

It's a sad commentary on today's sports world that antics like that can be interpreted as heart or leadership.

I'm used to first down catch histrionics, it's been going on for years and years. Doesn't bother me. Especially from wideouts. I mean, almost to a man, they are like that. No sweat.

But let's not go too far the other way here. Heart and leadership? Those are admirable qualities. Does that mean we should admire these outward signs from Roy?

"Look at the choreographed boog-a-loo after that 11 yard catch!! Man, what a leader!"

Please. That's spin at its worst. 20 years ago, Mark Gastineau was pretty much considered the most selfish, narcisstic player in the league, because he'd do a sack dance no matter what the score. His own teammates despised it.

Now it's a sign of heart and leadership? I don't think so.

Not heart. That is a totally different matter. Although that is not to say that I think that he hasn't shown heart this year, he has.Remember this is the Lions we are talking about. They need leadership, something, anything. Roy isn't the QB, yet he is the best player on the field and needs to lead. I don't personally like the histrionics, especially not his electric boogaloo, but if it helps to get his teammates focused on the game, great. Its not like he is boogalooing after he misses a pass or fumbles the ball. He is helping move the team down the field. Who am I to judge what he is thinking? At least he is contributing.

That's quite an assumption, and we sure don't have any evidence that it's helping.Again, the most those dances get from me is a roll of the eyes. I'm not knocking the player, or even the actions. But no one's going to tell me that he's showing leadership. Was Freddie Mitchell a leader?Roy wants to get his team fired up, maybe he should tell the QB 'good pass' or the O-line 'good blocking'.

Beat me to it.And I'm surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre that he's only doing it to "get his teammates focused."

It has NOTHING to do with self-promotion.

Seriously.

Nothing at all.

Ive heard him explain it in an interview and basically hes showing his excitement for his team getting 3 more downs.

Said he was too wound up his first couple of years, saw Hinez ward always smiling and decided to have more fun out there...

Nope, you're rightAnd as a Lions fan, I appreciate a guy who guys out and looks like he may be enjoying the game a bit, looks like he has some energy. Lord knows we could use about 11 guys like that on D.Now if it was Matt Millen doing the back up boogalo, I would be disturbed

:goodposting: Roy has really matured this year, and it's showing in his game - if the lions had an offensive line that could give a qb more than 2 seconds to throw he could be putting up 200 a game. He does the first down thing because just about ever ball he catches goes for a first down. the context of his "the score doesn't matter" comment is precisely what foo said: He's trying to not get down and take everything so seriously. So he's having fun out there and trying to lead his team. Did you happen to see him miked up on Inside the NFL a couple of weeks ago? He was anything but a selfish ### - just the opposite. his comments to teammates were things like "we'd be 6-1 right now if we could start the season over...come on boys!!" he's the best player on that team - God Bless him for trying to have a little fun amidst all the misery. Randy Moss could learn a thing or two from his example.

 Doesn't every single WR/RB/TE/FB do this same thing when they get a first down? It is rather ignorant...but everybody does it...not just Roy.

I think that's a bit of a stretch.
No, it'd be a stretch to say he isn't in the top five. Who are the magical five ahead of him? And before spitting out the automatic names, stop and look at the numbers for THIS year.
I'm sorry, but I like to base my judgements on what I actually see during games. Others would prefer to just look at a stat sheet and blindly spit out the names at the top of the list. To each his own, I suppose, but here are five receivers I'd take over Roy Williams:Steve Smith

Chad Johnson

Marvin Harrison

Tory Holt

Hines Ward

Good list. I'd put Williams right after these 5. Along with Walker, AJ, Fitzgerald and Boldin. Not top 5 yet, but each might be soon.ETA: There's a reason these are "automatic" names.

Fantasy wise Roy is top five, and talent-wise he is top five, and I base that opinion on watching every game he has played since coming to Detroit. Has he had a better career than Ward, Holt, or Harrison? Obviously not. But right now he is a better reciever than those three. His production with the likes of Harrington, Garcia and Kitna throwing him the ball atests to that.My list, in terms of ability, would be:

Smith

Boldin

Roy Williams

Walker

Holt

You're on the verge of hurting my feelings.

If the 1st downs led to points later it would mean more.

IIRC Chris Carter started this pointing for a 1st down celebration. It meant a bit more when he did it.

I can see how this could be construed as selfishness, but I'm just not sure that its the case here. I mean if every Lions player played like the score didn't matter they might learn something about how to get the most out of themselves and come back from deficits.

I mean even the dumb players in the NFL tend to know that gesturing for a first down when you losing badly late in a game makes you look like an idiot, its why none really do it. Roy probably realizes he looks ridiculous doing it but he’s doing it to try and pump up and lead his lousy team. Last time I checked this would be called putting your team ahead of your own image instead of the opposite. I mean it not like he's walking off the field or chewing out his teammates publicly, this is a player drawing attention in a good way to the only thing this franchise has going for it and its a travesty that his team can't at least rally around him emotionally.

I love how more than half the people in this thread that are defending him are undoubtedly Roy Williams fantasy owners. The fact of the matter is Roy continues to do his stupid first down dance when he is down by 20 with :30 seconds left. To think that this in some way motivates his teammates defies logic. While I understand that fantasy owners love when Roy makes catches in garbage time, there is absolutely no way to defend his dances, as anything but an attempt to get on Sportscenter.

So the man points when he grabs a first down catch. Big deal. Would you rather him hang his head in shame after looking at the scoreboard. Last time I checked, Roy Williams is one of the most productive WRs in the NFL. He can't play o-line, play defense, and play QB as well.

He's celebrating that he and his team made a good play. What a jerk.
Way to be the Voice Of Reason. The fact of the matter is he continues to do it even when his team has no chance to win the game. It would be like Kobe Bryant hitting a three at the buzzer, celebrating with his arms in the air, after his team has just lost by 10 points. I love celebrations in the NFL, and I hate the new rules that penalize them, but once again I can guarantee you that everyone that defends Roy Williams in situations like this either own him in fantasy leagues/are Lions fans/ or are Longhorn fans. If the Lions had more players like Roy Williams they would win more games, but doing a celebration dance while down at the end of the game is nothing but self promotion.

Your assuming he's only trying to motivate them for 30 seconds. Its not like he's trying to lead them to victory but leading by example and playing till the clock hits zero with the same energy through out is something this team for one needs to learn. Its not like Roy's probably even having that big of an impact, in fact he isn't the team still gives up and shows lack of effort, but to knock the man for trying isn't right. Lots of players do showboat to much but I don't think this is one of those times, and if I were a Lions fan I'd take about anything out of the ordinary I could get.

I do not own Roy, never have. I am not a fan of the Lions and I hate the Texas Longhorns.I see nothing wrong with Roy signaling first down. He's celebrating that his team made a good play, he's not going crazy like they won the game. Being excited about beating the defense the play that just happened is good. He's showing pride in he and his team's effort on that play. Yes his team was getting beat that game, but I don't think he's gotta sulk the entire game or be ashamed of himself. If his team would have kept getting first downs they probably wouldn't have lost the game, so he should be excited when they do something good.

If you want to include Roy Williams pointing to a first down after a catch, let me add some things I think are foolish.

1) Someone tell Ben Roethlisberger that wearing his hat backwards went out of style a few years ago.

2) Someone tell defensive lineman that dancing after a tackle and the guy just gained 8 yds is not cool.

3) Someone tell showboat players who score a TD that handing the ball to the ref to signify that you've been there before is more cool than a planned end zone routine. Disclaimer, acts of spontaneous combustion is coooool.

4) Someone tell players who point to their chest after a routine play they look stupid.

5) Someone tell NBA players that look of whining after every foul called on them is stupid. Sorry, I had to throw that one in.

6) Someone tell these players that jump into the stands after a TD (Lambeau Leap) it's getting old and I hate it. Besides, some crazy arsehole will stab one of these players some day (see Monica Seles).

7) Overall, the me, me, me, me attitude on the field in sports is not a good thing.

I'm sure you guys could add a few more.

Try and imagine what everyone would be saying about Randy Moss if he said the score didn't matter.

And does anyone really think that his temmates are gonna dig down and put out more effort because their teammate just showed up the defense? And if so, have all the other me-first WR's of the past 20-some years been horribly misjudged? Were they all just leaders, showing emotion, and trying to pump up their teammates?

if so, I owe a lot of guys an apology. I thought they were just #####.
