Tailback Rudi Johnson, looking forward to his first preseason action Thursday night, said this afternoon he would not be surprised to be traded. It was reported Monday night that the Bengals are shopping the eighth-year running back in hopes of landing a wide receiver in return.
"They've been trying to get me out of here for a long time," Johnson said after practicing for the second day in a row. "It's part of the league. It's part of the game."
Johnson, who missed five games last season with hamstring problems, has been slowed again this preseason by the other hamstring.
"It's a rumor," head coach Marvin Lewis said of the ESPN report. "It makes no sense for me to confirm or deny anything involving a player."
Wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who also has battled with a hamstring problem in the preseason, practiced today for the second day in a row and said he experienced no pain or soreness out of the ordinary. He said whether he plays Thursday night in the preseason finale at Indianapolis is Lewis' decision.
Quarterback Carson Palmer, wearing a protective cover on his broken nose, said he would not play against the Colts. It was the plan all along, he said, regardless of the injury. He said the front edge of his helmet smacked the bridge of his nose when he was sacked by former Bengals safety Kevin Kaesviharn of the Saints on a blitz Saturday night. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start at quarterback.
Lewis said his team is getting healthier and that he anticipates the full return to practice Monday of several players, including defensive end Antwan Odom (foot), wide receiver Chad Johnson (shoulder) and safety Dexter Jackson (who sprained his ankle Monday in practice). Safety Chinedum Ndukwe (leg) is healing faster than expected but is probably not going to practice Monday. Lewis did say the Bengals would hold a roster spot for Ndukwe. Final cuts are Saturday; 22 players will be released from the roster to get it down to 53.
Defensive end Eric Henderson, who has missed all of the preseason games, had an ice bag on his right hamstring after practice.
Lewis said the team's draft pick rookies are making progress in practice. Lewis also praised the performances of wide receivers Glenn Holt and Jerome Simpson.
