According to the FGBs update: [Tue Sep 30, 6:47 PM] Rudi Johnson has been moved into the starting line-up ahead of rookie Kevin Smith. Granted the Lions run game is somewhat less then overwhelming, but this appears to me to still be big news. Discuss...

Unless he can also block for himself, nothing to see here.DISCLAIMER: I am a Lions Fan. Our season is over, but a success. Millen is gone. We are looking forward to next year.

Evidently we're all missing something. This from Tuesdays "players in the news"
CB Keith Smith (DET) has lost his starting job to veteran Rudi Johnson, and Smith isn't happy about it. "Personally, I don't like it. I think I should be playing a lot more. But it's all about winning," Smith said. "It's nothing against Rudi, he's a good back. If you want to play him, play him," Smith said. "But when my number's called, I'm going to perform, bottom line. I'm good. I can make as many plays as anybody on this offense. Anybody. We'll see what happens."
Looks like he's playing both sides of the ball. This is huge.

coach Rod is a lame duck. He's going to try to win every game possible to save his butt rather than develop the young talent. Kitna and Rudi will be playing alot longer than they should be

I'm not a Detroit fan, but it seems kind of dumb to lay this at the Coach's feet. People around the league seem to think he's a pretty good coach. Why not give him a year or two when he might actually have someone making competent personnel decisions? I think NFL teams are underrating how much firing head coaches and/or coordinators every couple of years is hurting them in developing players. As to Rudi and fantasy football, it never hurts to have another starting RB. I'm not excited about him, but I never have been and he's proven me wrong before. Kevin Smith may or may not be anything special, but I would expect him to still get his opportunities so they can evaluate their plans going forward, especially as the season progresses.

Rudi put up good numbers in week 3 which was one of their worst games to date. Also, if they do insert Stanton, then Rudi would be a more stable presence back there than a rookie blocking.

I have to agree....the New GM is going to want to bring in his guy...Rods only chance is to post a winning season

The Lions would get rid of Rod, I agree. He seems knowledgable so maybe that's the wrong move. Is there another position or is it the staff around him? Wanna know what I would do here? I would take a retired guy from a well established top organization like Ernie Accorsi from the Giants, and pay him HUGE money to work from now until April. Tell him to hire everyone.

He worked for the classy Mara family that has roots almost to the NFL's beginning they go back so far. He was George Young's assistant, and the Giants current GM was his assistant. He's seen tons and tons of today's HC work for the Giants in some capacity. There's development within for both coaches and the scouting/GM dept. IMO That is the picture perfect way to run an organization. It would take HUGE money to get him for just that 6-7 months but I'd bet it would pay dividends for a long long time and maybe even prove to be cheap in the long run.

I never quite understood (former Miami U and Dallas coach) Jimmy Johnson to be someone that looks at the longterm picture. I would predict he could revamp their staff with quality though. He always had some GM to him too.

Maybe just mentioning these two stirs up some other better ideas from you guys. There's little reason to believe that letting current Lions staffers hire more people will prove different results. Let some retired guy that knows how to do it, do it.

ETA Marvin Lewis would be someone I would overpay to be the DC. Lane Kiffin seems like a good young mind. I don't know what the position would be for him but, there is some quality out there already(or soon).
