Rugs (1 Viewer)

Wife and I were talking about how a rug would really tie the room together.

We stopped by a Macy's "clearance" place on the way home from breakfast, and walked over to the "rug sale". First one we saw was $4,795. First thought was this must be a special rug, but all the rugs had enormously high prices.

I've never bought a rug before (and perhaps I never will), so I don't totally know if this is normal but this seemed to be just insane to me.

Am I missing something or doing something wrong here?

Just think how much more expensive they would be if they weren't made by 12-year-old Pakistani girls making 10 cents an hour.

That does sound a bit on the high side. I would never go over $2,500 for a throw rug.

You should be able to get something decent for under a grand. Of course it all depends on what you want.

Ikea seems to be only smallish rugs. I'm a footballguy, so I need a larger one.

Overstock seems promising here as they have a zillion of them.

Uh, is there a difference that I care about between carpet & a rug?

Any downside to just getting some carpet that is cut to the size I want?

Persian rugs (whether made in Afghanistan or Iran or Pakistan, etc.) are extremely valuable if they are of high quality. They are handmade (yes, I am sure in many cases by girls who make about 10 cents an hour, but who would be without a job otherwise).

We have one made of silk that we bought as a one year anniversary gift to each other which is about 4x6. It has been in our front hallway for 26 years, and looks as new as the day we bought it.

You can get high quality machine made ones like the ones from Karastan brand, and they are much cheaper. However, do not go into the jungle of putting down a lot of money for a beautiful rug if you don't know your stuff. Typically, you will walk into a rug store and they will show you rugs which are selling for 75% off. Of course, what was 100? It's like offering you Titleist ProV1 golf balls for $5 each and calling it 75% off (they normally sell for less than $4).

Pier 1 has a decent selection of rugs. But you are still going to pay around $400.

Edited to add that you can also find ones there for around $150 as well.

Check them out:

It will look good for about 2 days, and then turn into a disaster. The ends will start unraveling and you'll have little fibers of carpet everywhere.

To continue on this....The difference between a carpet and a rug is usually a rug has some different colors, patterns or fabric thickness/quality on it that you won't find in regular carpet.

If all you want is a single colored rug or different texture than what's currently on your floor than you definitely don't need to pay thousands of dollars.

You can actually go to Home Depot or Lowe's to the carpet section and I believe they can make certain carpets into rugs for you (finished edges, sized to your specs, etc.). I believe I found what I have already pre-made at a misc. hardware type store like this for a little over a hundred bucks 5 or so years ago.

Persian rugs are from Iran. Pakistan is known for decent rugs, as is Turkey. China and India make decent knockoffs of Persian styles. But the bottom line is that Persian rugs are the best. I own two Bijar rugs and if my house catches fire, I grab my wife, daughter and this rug.I love Tabriz rugs, particularly the Mahi style. Like this one.

There are some stunners here.

When I was in India on work, I did some Kashmir rug shopping thinking I could get a deal. Wasn't happening.

1X3 runners for a hallway were like $900 - $1200

Full room rugs were around $6k and up.

I went home rugless

Well, I got a chunk of carpet.

This may be considered ghetto, but for about $150, it was what I was looking for. The guy cut it to the size I wanted, put some felt like backer on it, ran the edges through a machine and did some hot glue stuff on the corners.

I'll try to put a pic up.

I highly recommend never shopping at Macy's furniture store.

Anyone who spends less than 4k on a rug shouldn't bother. You only live once last time I checked. A cheap rug screams at your guests that you and your life are a joke.

Found some decent deals and quality from Overstock.com ... of course, you have to be OK with not seeing them in person before buying.
:goodposting:

Searched the FFA for recommendations, and after browsing just ordered a few area rugs from there with separate padding to go under the rugs on Tuesday. Great prices, and user reviews to go along with them. I'm required to cover 70%+ of the hardwood in the apartment that I'm moving into being on the 3rd floor, and wasn't looking to spend a fortune on them. Got free shipping, rugs delivered today.

If you live near NYC I can put you in touch with Mustafa. Met him in Turkey and he's been calling me for 16 years trying to sell me a rug. Never saw his NY supply, but it must be good as he's so persistent.

eta: before buying a rug, do a good amount of research on it. Easy to determine if its machine made or man made by the back stitching. Research will also give you price ranges and the type of rug that's best for you.

It's been the same rug for 16 years.
