Rules Question - Trading Keeper Picks (1 Viewer)

Forgive me if this has been addressed before. I searched for quite a while and could not find a specific answer.

In a keeper league, should the actual right to keep a player be a transferrable right?

Example:

Keeper league allows each team to keep up to 3 players.

Team A trades Shaun Alexander to Team B for Wali Lundy and one of Team B's keeper rights. The end result is that Team A ends up with 4 keeper picks and Team B ends up with 2 keeper picks plus the players that were swapped.

I'm incllined to say that the trading of the right to keep a player should not be allowed, but I don't want to be narrow minded.

Opinions?

Sounds legit to me. Just a detail to help avoid confusion: make sure it's clear that the rights are just for the one year and not for the life of the league.

We have always allowed this in our long time keeper league, but the league was setup with rules that encourage trading of all sorts. Picks, protects, players - anything is tradable. But Babyeater is right - no asset is perminantly tradeable.

For many teams, a 1st round pick is better than a protect spot, for others not as good. If you evaluate trades as a 1st being roughly equal to a protect, you won't be far from wrong.

Obviously there should be a rule in place one way or the other - if the league is just a 3-keeper league, then no, I don't think implicit in that is the right to trade keeper spots.

If you want to take the league in that direction, just put in the rules. Personally, I don't like it, but that's just me.

It depends on how your rules are written.

I'm all for creative trading, but if your rules state that this league is a "keep 3 player keeper league" then you can't trade the "right" of one of your keepers for the rules stipulate that each team keeps 3 players, no more and no less.
