RUMOR About the Cowboys (1 Viewer)

"I'm hearing rumors here in the Dallas area on The Ticket and ESPN radio of the Cowboys trying to work a trade with Detroit for Roy Williams. Dallas is trying to give up Greg Ellis and Anthony Henry for Roy Williams.

THIS IS A RUMOR RIGHT NOW, nothing more. Still interesting and the Cowboys have pieces in place to replace both Greg Ellis and Anthony Henry, so there is no doubt they could do it. We'll just have to see if it happens."

Thoughts?

Jerry trying to corner the market on Roy Williamses

at a minimum, never a bad idea to have the better of the two.

As far as rumors go, it seems plausible. Although the Lions have already spent a lot of time and effort in bringing in help at the CB position, from the trade for Leigh Bodden to the signings of Brian Kelly and Travis Fisher.

I would think trading AWAY Roy Williams (the safety) might be a better idea.

i honestly don't see how an aging Ellis and Henry help the Lions...

that said, 4 to 1 Millen does it... idiot

millen prolly jsut figured out he didn't have RWilliams the SAFETY?! 'we better get that guy outta here before someone notices'

As high octane as this offense is, it is not littered with receiving talent (at least in terms of depth). TO and Witten are clearly studs, but after that, Crayton, Glenn if healthy, Sam Hurd, et al are not gamebreakers. For the Dallas O to really reach the top, another high quality WR is probably necessary. Dallas is always mentioned as a destination for big free agents, and most of the time it is just hogwash, but I think Dallas in this year's offseason is a little different, they realize that they would really benefit from one more WR, which is why we've seen the rumor with Roy before, the Chad Johnson rumor, and also rumblings about Pac Man playing some WR. I'm not saying it's likely that Dallas will pull the trade out for Roy, but I am a little surprised that they didn't do more to solidify their WR2 role this offseason.

I have no doubt that the 'Boys would want a player like Roy, I have little doubt they'd inquire.

As much of an idiot Millen is, even he would need considerably more for Roy than this. Aside from picks, I'm not sure what else Dallas has to offer. Maybe include Crayton?

My initial instinct is to agree, but what do you think Roy is worth? Shockey just went for a 2nd and a 5 and is under contract. Roy has, like Shockey, battled injuries but been highly productive when on the field. Unlike Shockey, he's in his last year of his contract and is going to get monster dollars from someone next offseason. I would be willing to pay a lot for him but only if I had a window to negotiate an extension first.

Williams can simply walk away from Detroit at the end of the year.....no?That said.....I don't think this has much chance of happening.Edit: Also...the Cowboys message board I frequent has nothing on the topic. If this was discussed/reported, I find it odd that no one caught it. Not calling out the OP...just saying.

Detroit can compete and even win the NFC North as silly as that sounds

all other teams have pathetic or new QBs

they need to try and win, and Henry and Ellis won't help them do that

Why trade for Williams when they can have Chris Henry for nothing. :goodposting:
I don't think the Cowboys can have Henry on the same team w/ Pacman. isn't there a rule about felons hanging out together? no seriously, i think signing Henry is a good idea, although there is the potential for Henry being a distraction through his behavior. This is a potential SB team so i guess it's not worth the risk to sign Henry. Too bad though ... that offense would be sick!!

Anything is possible, but with that defense, I just don't see it. Minnesota and Green Bay are demonstrably better, particularly on defense. And Chicago, while offensively challenged, should have a much improved defense this year as their key players are signed, happy and back from injury. If Marinelli wins 8 games this year, he deserves an extension.

Well I've had the The Ticket on all morning while working and have turned it off only when taking a phone call. I've heard nothing about a trade. I just flipped over to the Michael Irvin show on ESPN radio. Nothing.

If Dallas and Detroit do not trade Roy Williams for Roy Williams, they are missing the opportunity of a lifetime.

Sure, although I can see the Lions slapping the franchise tag on him.

I've been listening to The Ticket today as well. All morning and up til about 2 hours ago and heard nothing. Not to say it wasn't mentioned. I was away for "moments."

In any case, this may just be another "floating device" to get Terry Glenn to agree to his injury settlement (just as the Joe Horn rumor was) before they take flight to Oxnard for training camp tomorrow.

It could also be something somebody manufactured, with Ellis and Henry being the only players to express any amount of "disgruntlement" in recent months. Ellis because he was losing snaps to Spencer in OTAs, and Henry the same with Adam Jones.

However, it's been no secret the Cowboys have been pursuing Detroit's Roy Williams for several months now, and I did see Calvin Watkins of Dallas Morning News in an interview last night and he mentioned that he didn't think the Cowboys were thru with pursuing another WR. So who knows?

I wouldn't bank on it, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

I REALLY REALLY like Williams. It was one of the decent picks we've had (ever). He still hasn't quite lived up to his potential, but most of that is the Lion's organization's fault and having sub-par players around him...

I would like to see us keep him and continue to try and improve..

is Global Warming Millen's fault too?

Hey Sinrman,I think it was a decent pick like you've mentioned, but I don't think he's lived up to his potential either. We both agree that it's a decent pick and that he hasn't lived up to his potential........so I guess I don't know why you REALLY REALLY like Roy Williams. I don't think he has much more to offer, meaning he has some other gear that we haven't seen. He seems to get dinged rather easily and I think I'm more down on his overall numbers this year than I have been since his rookie year. If he finishes inside the top 20 WR's I'd be mildly surprised.

Unless something has changed:

"Still exploring WR option. Sending out smoke signals, but you try not to tamper. Detroit wasn't trading RW. Never talked with the other two clubs. They've gotta come to you. Can't really say any more." JJ
P.S.That above quote was in May of this year. What the Ticket and ESPN was doing is throwing out possible WRs to bring in with the TG negotiations getting ugly. The Cowboys have since said on a number of times they believe in Crayton, Hurd and Austin.

This actually makes sense - Dallas gets Roy Williams to replace Terry Glenn, Detroit gets some big time DL and secondary help. Calvin Johnson moves to the #1 WR role, which is a 300-page thread altogether. Shaun McDonald #2 and Mike Furrey #3.

Leigh Bodden and Anthony Henry at the corners would be

Anthony Henry is expendable with Adam Jones ready to take over. Jones and Newman would work fine. Dallas would lose some depth, but ultimately this could benefit both teams rather dramatically.

Info from Det contact:

I haven't heard a peep on this from the Lions side. Rod Marinelli seems intent on running the ball up the gut with the rook K. smith, and then throwing deep to Calvin Johnson and/or Roy Williams, since teams won't be able to stack the run and still double cover both guys. I don't see any trades of Williams until after the season. He is in a contract year, and I think the Lions want to take full advantage of it -- then sign him, franchise him and/or trade him after what they think will be a monster year for him.

I woudl say that these are just rumors at this time.

The Lions won't be able to trade Williams at the end of the season because his contract will have expired.

Unless they tag him ala Jared Allen.

They can get Roy Williams and Chad Johnson and it won't make a bit of difference. They'll still lose their first playoff game as long as Tony Choko is the qb.
