RUMOR MILL: Belichick & Pioli to the Giants (1 Viewer)

Why not Pioli and John Fox to the Giants, two homers and
Is Carolina unhappy with Foxy? The Mara's won't tamper. No way that happens.IIRC When Fassel was struggling, NYG fans were complaining that they didn't keep him so I'd expect they'd be happy to get him.The Giants franchise is different than many out there. We're talking "front office" jobs here. There's a level of class and professionalism that Wellington Mara surely left his mark. I'm sure in today's era of football that many GMs would find that to be of some comfort and wouldn't mind the job. I'm not sure if that's enough to pry Pioli away. He's got it good where he's at. I would imagine this mini news storm is Pioli's agent creating another offer so he gets paid more to stay. A bit of posturing. I'm going to be shocked if Reese is not the Giants GM. He knows the Giants players and Ernie's line of thinking better than anyone. Those two spend alot of time together. You guys beat up Ernie here, indirectly, but he's been a very good GM. I'm sure the Giants want some sort of continuity that Reese will bring them.

Scott Pioli has a "tie" to the Giants as Bill Parcells Son in Law. So with the Marra family they would be bringing "one of theirs" home. I could see that.Belichick could be a different story IMHO, the woman he has had an affair (alleged affair) worked for the Giants as an assistant. That could be the kind of "bringing home" they may want to avoid. For the record I thin if they could get BB they would ignore his finding a date in their hallways. The only reason I would believe all of this is things change fast in the NFL, and there have been so many coaching changes that "would never happen" starting with Bill Parcells that you just cannot say never. And in a REALLY wild thought (my own)Why not Pioli and John Fox to the Giants, two homers and Bill Cowher to the Panthers??
I would be happy with that.

The reason these sort of things have credibility is that in the NFL we've seen some pretty high-profile head coaches suddenly change teams for various reasons.

Vermiel leaving what he built with the Rams to go to the Chiefs.

Parcells bouncing around all over the place.

Holmgren seeking more power and thus leaving the Packers for the Seahawks.

Gruden getting traded by Al Davis to the Bucs.

Schottenheimer's bizarre departure from the Browns to coach the Chiefs.

Belichick himself leaving the Jets job for the Patriots after one day.

NFL coaching is a strange business.

Bump for update.

Patriots VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli declined to speak with the Giants about their vacant GM job.

Wow. We're not sure which is more surprising: That the Patriots granted permission to Pioli to talk or that he passed up the chance. Bill Belichick reportedly even placed a call to tell them how good Pioli is. Score one for Robert Kraft, who must have done something to keep Pioli. Jan. 8 - 4:02 pm et

Mike Francesa just reported (via a NY beat writer whose name escaped me) that the Patriots gave the Giants permission to speak to Scott Pioli but, when contacted, Pioli declined to interview for the job as he's not interested.

:pickle: :pickle: :pickle: :lmao:

These 2 guys love the Patriots. The Patriots love these 2 guys. Move along, nothing to see here.

What's more impressive, SB Berths with 3 different teams, or 3 SB victories with the same team?
 Comparing SB berths to SB wins isn't exactly a fair comparison. How about what's more impressive, SB ring with 2 diff teams or getting another one w/the same team that you've already gotten 3 with? Both would be impressive, but I'd vote #1.

Sorry, Giants fans... Pioli is staying on with the good guys. :goodposting:

The Patriots released the following statement from Scott Pioli:

"I am very honored to be granted the opportunity to discuss a potential position with the New York Giants. I have tremendous respect for the Kraft family, the Mara family, the Tisch family and the Giants organization. After careful consideration, and for personal reasons, I am continuing in my current role with the New England Patriots."

Good news for Patriot fans about Pioli. Especially since this offseason can really put them over the top. With 2 #1's and a projected 30 mill in cap space they can really set themselves up for the the foreseeable future.

One thing to remember about Pioli...he's still very young. He maybe thinking he can ride the Pats out for awhile longer and do some things that are really special. After that he can move on to pretty much any position he wants if his goal is to do something with more than one franchise.

If PEter King's column today is to be believed, the Patriots are the best team in the history of the world forever!

Better then JOrdan's Bulls. Better then Russell's Celtics. Better then Montana's 49ers. Better then Ruth's Yankees. Better then the Google Guys and better then the founding fathers of this great country.

THE BEST EVER.

Adam Schefter just reported that, although a "longshot", there is some discussion regarding the Big Tuna coming back to Jersey as the Giants GM.

Why so bitter?

Anyway - just wanted to throw it out there. I don't think there's any question that the Giants head coaching job is looked upon as something special to Belichick.
Hi jets,In your opinion, what is it about the Giants job that is special to Belichick?J

Very interesting. I don't know if Bill would be a good front office guy or not, but it would certainly make the next coaching staff an interesting one. The fans would be hard pressed to bomb a coach that was hired by Bill. I know I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. But after Pioli just made us, well, comical, who the hell knows what is going to happen.

I think he'd be fine as a GM.That would likely mean his buddy Coughlin stays though

:bag:Honestly, Belichick has had more success in New England than all but a handful of coaches in NFL history; and his team still has all of the key pieces to remain competitive for some time to come. What could the Giants possibly offer Belichick right now? If, in a few years, the Patriots current incarnation starts to run its course; maybe then I could see Belichick looking for his next opportunity. But right now it makes absolutely no sense.

It's not so much my opinion as it is what is said by lots of the writers around here. Specifically, Michael Holley, the guy who wrote Patriot Reign, was given a year of unlimited access to the team and staff (great read, by the way). When these rumors surfaced, Holley and others discussed how the Giants position would be a special job to not just Belichick, but all of the disciples that came up through that Giants system with Parcells. including Weis and Crennel. It may not make sense for Belichick to leave today from NE to the Giants, but the point is the Giants position is probably the only one that would even be tempting because of their historical ties with the franchise.

I said no way back on page 1 but to reply to this-The passing of Mara and retirement of Ernie, I'm sure they'd like some sort of continuity or semblance of "the good ol days" wanting to continue a family tradition. GM and coaching job could be available. If the sons can continue like their father then it's one of the better jobs to have in football IMO. BP or BB is probably the perfect guy for the job right now in their opinion. This is the first time they're looking for a coach without their father's influence so you can almost see how they wind up with both those as the first choice. Also I believe Landry's time as a Giant D cooridinator fascinates BB. Inventing(or making it popular depending on the source) the 4-3 and red dog blitz, being the first to call signals to the D.....etc.

The honor and tradition that is the NY Giants and ushering them through the passing of the old guard that was, in many ways, everything that is good in big time sports.

Looks like the Tuna got shot down.Giants: Say no thanks to Parcells Tuesday, January 09, 2007BY MIKE GARAFOLO AND PAUL NEEDELLStar-Ledger Staff The Giants have rebuffed an overture from Cowboys coach Bill Parcells about returning to the organization as general manager, according to a high-ranking NFL executive familiar with the team's thinking. Parcells had informed the Giants through an intermediary that he would be interested in returning to the organization to replace the retiring Ernie Accorsi, according to two NFL executives and a player. The sources requested anonymity because of the private nature of the search. The revelation came after the Giants were snubbed by Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli. As reported in yesterday's Star-Ledger, the Giants planned to interview Pioli and were granted permission from New England. But yesterday Pioli declined to be interviewed, saying in a statement he will remain with the Patriots "for personal reasons." He declined to be more specific. Parcells' status with Dallas is unclear after Saturday night's wild 21-20 loss to the Seahawks. The Cowboys, who were seen as Super Bowl contenders just a month ago, lost when quarterback Tony Romo fumbled the hold of a 19-yard field-goal attempt with 1:19 remaining. It was a fitting end to a tumultuous season that included plenty of tense moments involving wide receiver Terrell Owens, the benching of then-starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe and a collapse at season's end that cost the Cowboys the NFC East title. Owner Jerry Jones has said he wants Parcells, 65, back as coach. Parcells' contract requires him to make a decision by Feb. 1. "I'm going to take a look at things, take a look at what we need to do and see where we go," Parcells said after the loss to the Seahawks. Parcells, who coached the Giants to Super Bowl titles after the 1986 and 1990 seasons, has one year remaining on his contract, so he can't leave to coach the Giants without compensation. Jones would likely block such a move to a division rival anyway, but he could leave to become general manager of another team because that is considered a promotion. Parcells has also coached the Patriots and Jets. He did not return a message left on his cell phone last night. A return to the Giants would give Parcells, who grew up in Oradell and has long had a house at the Jersey Shore, a chance to end his Hall of Fame career close to home. But the Giants appear to be looking for a younger candidate who would stay in the job for the long term. Pioli, 41, would have fit the profile and was the leading outside candidate. Pioli, along with Patriots coach and former Parcells assistant Bill Belichick, have constructed a dynasty in New England that includes three Super Bowl wins. Pioli is married to Parcells' daughter, Dallas. Former Texans general manager Charlie Casserly also interviewed with the Giants, but is considered a long shot. Inside the organization, the No. 1 option is director of player personnel Jerry Reese. It's unclear if Reese, 42, would have won a battle for the job with Pioli. But Reese is highly regarded by team president John Mara, treasurer Jonathan Tisch and executive vice president Steven Tisch -- the three decision-makers in this process.
