RUMOR (1 Viewer)

Article in the Chicago Tribune about this (Chicagosports.com)

Not surprising, but won't happen unless Jones throws a lot (and I mean A LOT) of $$ Smith's way....I think that Chico Rivera is better suited for the gig (although it's a job I would not want at all).

They would not only have to pay Smith, they'd also have to compensate Chicago, no? Doesn't Smith have one more year on his contract?

As heard on the Dan Patrick show:

In terms of coaching philosophies, it's not a good fit considering the personnel.

Cowboys have drafted in the past specifically for a 3-4 defense whereas Lovie runs a cover 2...also, it sounds like Cowboys are looking for an offensive minded coach so they can develop Romo. Seems like it will provide some leverage however for Love when he's planning out a new contract extension with Chicago.

I'm pretty sure that the Cowboys can't even approach Smith (or any other head coach under contract) unless they received permission to do so from the Bears organization.

Lovie Smith isn't going anywhere.

1) He's under contract for the 2007 season

2) He's led the Bears to the Super Bowl

3) He's a minority - and the McCaskeys would get KILLED by the media, and hometown boy Jessie Jackson

4) He's a very loyal person - look how loyal he's been to Tank Johnson and Rex Grossman - and if Ron Rivera lives, he's already pretty much guaranteed the job to longtime friend and LB Coach Bob Babich.

Hey Grid -Even though Lovie has a year left on his contract, he is the lowest paid coach in the NFL. Given that he was last year's coach of the year and this year has taken the Bears to the SB, do the Bears tear up his contract or make him honor it for one more year?

I would think that the Bears will work out a long term deal WHEN the Bears win the Super Bowl, they will not let the 3rd best coach in team's history without throwing some serious dough his way. I would expect the Bears to make a generous offer to him for 4-5 years.

No contract for Lovie then...

Who gives a #### what that guy thinks?

Mike Singletary to replace Rivera?

NEVER. First of all, Lovie Smith wants guys that coach and teach - how were SF's linebackers the past two years - as that's the name on Singletary's business card? Second of all, he can't become anything except a head coach, as he's 'protected' by the 'Asst Head Coach' tag. Third of all, how did Richard Dent work out as a coach? Ron Rivera worked himself up the ranks (as Jack Del Rio did also) - THAT is the correct way to do it. Not expect to be on the fast track because of your name.

Lovie was never a head coach when he was hired, so he was paid accordingly. Then he had an awful rookie season. Then they made the playoffs and lost immediately. I think they simply wanted to see Lovie 'progress' and take the next step. His handling of the Tank Johnson fiasco, the Cedric Benson / Thomas Jones drama and his continued loyalty to Rex Grossman has probably sold the Bears hiearchy on Lovie.

They'll tear up his existing last year and pay him accordingly, as he was underpaid this year. They won't vastly underpay him two years in a row. Of course, this will be part of the negotiation.

his continued loyalty to Rex Grossman has probably sold the Bears hiearchy on Lovie.
Why? Do they live in the bizzaro world or something?Rex is not starting NFL QB caliber, I expect him to be a backup within 2 years (sooner if the devil decides to end his deal with Rex early), and out of the NFL in 3 or 4.

How can you say that , based on his short career??? Manning , Brees, Bradshaw, Elway, Aikman, Farve had similar #'s their first full seasons. There is no way to tell What Rex will become, he has not played enough games to tell yet. If he is still playing like this in his third year, your point may be valid, but not yet it isn't.

I say that because in watching him play he hardly ever looks like he can handle the job. He looks lost out there even when things seem to be going right. I mean really lost. I don't see any progress in his game over the season. I don't see him make tough throws or great reads. I see horrible decision making. I see panic. I see a lot of chuck and duck, throw it up and pray from him. Then there are the problems with game awareness, time management and other more esoteric mental aspects that I see no indication of him possessing.Maybe he'll turn it around, it's not impossible. I don't think it's likely, and I think the Bears should be looking for a long term solution somewhere else.If they had an average QB the Bears would be the best team in the NFL, no question. If they had an above average QB they'd have a shot at being a dominant team for years to come.

Rex isn't a good QB, yet he's in the Super Bowl and he is the only QB in the Conference Championship games that didn't throw an interception?

Has he thrown any yet this postseason?

My magic 8 ball says "you guys never thought it would be possible to ask again later" 30 other starting NFL QBs would love to be in Rex Grossman's position right now.
Which has absolutely nothing to do with how bad Grossman is as a QB.And in anticipation of your next remarks:1) Because they're very good to excellent at just about every other position2) He played the weakest schedule (teamwise or vs. qbs, take your pick) of anyone in the NFL this year.

So you are saying Farve looked better his first 2 seasons??? Farve was so bad that all of the coaches, except Holmgren wanted him benched, Holgren saw something in him that no-one else did and stood by him and kept him the starter, the rest is history. The same things you just said of Grossman , applied to all of the QB's I mentioned, it took them all a few full seasons to become great, right now Rex is starting out EXACTLY like they did ( Except that he is going to the SuperBowl in his first full season) , Rex may not get to that level, but with what he has done so far, there is no way to tell yet, if he can do the same as others before him have done. Until Rex gets to that point, and fails or succeeds, nobody will know if he is a failure or a great QB, there simply is not enough evidence yet.

You know what... football is a TEAM game, it's a no-brainer that Grossman isn't in Manning's league, but I believe the Bears have a better 'team' than the Colts.

Hester can shred their pitiful special teams.

Berrian can burn 'em deep.

And the 1-2 punch of Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson can run right down their throats behind Olin Kreutz.

The last time they played 'the great' Dwight Freeney had one lousy sack.

The grass down in Miami will also slow down the Colts offense.

Just remember this post when you see Mark Anderson sitting on 'the great' Peyton Manning head. And then try not to laugh when you see Goober drag himself off the turf looking out of his ear hole.

The whole Rex argument is  . Either you are a Rex supporter or you think he is Akili Smith II...who cares? And what does one's opinion on Rex have to do with this rumor thread?

Sounds like Jason Garrett is going to have a contract with the Cowboys tomorrow. Most likely as the Offensive Coordinator, but possibly as the Head Coach.

Stay Tuned.
