Running backs (1 Viewer)

everyone is saying Ryan Mathews is the clear cut #1 dynasty rookie running back. I like Jahvid Best just as much, tell me who you think will be better and give your reason.

Mathews b/c of the team he is on, better talent around him.
Mathews - Positives - Good size and strength. Going to a very good offence. Unquestioned #1 back..cappavle of being a 3down back with the majority of TD carries.Negatives - Good athlete but not elite. After the draft (due to going to a good team/situation) many have forgotten that Mathews is a good/not great RB. Mathews also had nick/knack injuries thoughout college and must prove he can play through those. Many have also determined he is going to be a good recieving back although he has proved nothing. The final negative is, SD may not be the RB paradise many are projecting. Their only good WR is holding out. Their best OL is holding out, their run blocking is terrible, and they have serious depth problems. If it wasn't for Rivers, I'd actually say Mathews is in a very questionable situation...and even Rivers can only do so much. Best - Positives - Elite athlete. Going to an up an coming offence that needs him as a play maker. Has a real chance at being a 3 down back, although I see him losing out on GL carries. Closest thing we have seen to M Westbrook since well Michael himself. Has the recieiving potential to be top 5 in RB receptions for years and that will greatly offset the lower TD carries.Negatives - Injury Risk. At his size you can easily see him having a shorter RB career even without major injury. He will likely be limited in cheap TD carries. Teams Offensive line is not very good, although that is somewhat offset by his running style....it's too easy to compare him to Barry due to the team, but it's hard to deny the style similarities, which can overcome mediocre OL play.Overall - I rate Mathews a slight edge over Best, but not by much and I wouldn't be surprised to see Best end up the better ppr performer. I think that many have overrated Mathews at this point. If we had a crystal ball that could only predict health/injuries and it said Best and Mathews would both experience normal healthy careers...I'd rate Best over Mathews in ppr by a decent margin, but we don't, so I won't.

I don't know anything about the talent difference between Best and Matthews and really I don't know much about Best's mental makeup. However living in San Diego I have listened to multiple interviews with Matthews and I'm telling you this kid has his head screwed on right. He's mature, he's intelligent, he's composed and he seems to be truly self aware. He clearly understands that it will take tremendous dedication and discipline to be great in the NFL. I really like Matthews' attitude.

If he has the physical tools, and most scouts think Matthews has the tools, I have zero concerns about his work ethic and mental ability to adjust to the pro game.

Anyone have any information about Best's mental makeup?

I think Best will be a three down back, and even though he's not the ideal goal line back i don't see Kevin Smith taking away to many TDs.

I agree that Mathews is the better dynasty back, but isn't there a chance that the lions have the better or equal offense. I don't know about offensive lines so I could be completely wrong, but the lions have the best receiver of the two teams and they have a quarterback who showed a lot of promise last year. Of course Phillip Rivers is the better qb right now, but I wouldn't be shocked if Stafford is better than Rivers the year after this coming one. I think that Matthews has the advantage because the lions will be behind in a lot of games so they won't run it as much and Best has concussion problems, but I think their offenses and situations are pretty equal if Stafford can develop. Again I don't know about o lines I do know that the chargers o line was pretty bad in terms of run blocking last year though.
