In 2002 only three teams ran the ball more than they threw it.

In 2003 six teams ran the ball more than they threw it.

In 2004 ten teams ran the ball more than they threw it.

In 2005 eleven teams ran the ball more than they threw it.

Of those 11 teams this past year, 3 were repeat rushers... Atlanta and Pittsburgh have had more rushing plays each of the last two years, while Denver has run it more for three consecutive years.

Definitely a trend, but a funny one.

First, I think teams got a little pass-crazy, but also we're seeing a shift in how teams use multiple RBs. But also, I think that the pass defense rules changed, and they were particularly favorable to passing to TEs. Usually, you'd just use an LB to mug the TE and be done with it. Now that they're calling it more, teams have a harder time covering the TE, and will often use the S to cover him. Teams respond by rushing more, since the 8th man (the S) is in pass protection.
