Russia: Poland Risks Attack Because of US Missiles

Russian general says US missile defense deal exposes Poland to possible nuclear attack

By JIM HEINTZ Associated Press Writer

MOSCOW August 15, 2008 (AP)

The Associated Press

Russia's deputy chief of General Staff Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn told reporters Friday that Poland risks a military attack, possible nuclear, for agreeing to allow a U.S. anti-missile defense system to be based in Poland.

A top Russian general said Friday that Poland's agreement to accept a U.S. missile interceptor base exposes the ex-communist nation to attack, possibly by nuclear weapons, the Interfax news agency reported.

The statement by Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn is the strongest threat that Russia has issued against the plans to put missile defense elements in former Soviet satellite nations.

Poland and the United States on Thursday signed a deal for Poland to accept a missile interceptor base as part of a system the United States says is aimed at blocking attacks by rogue nations. Moscow, however, feels it is aimed at Russia's missile force.

"Poland, by deploying (the system) is exposing itself to a strike — 100 percent," Nogovitsyn, the deputy chief of staff, was quoted as saying.

He added, in clear reference to the agreement, that Russia's military doctrine sanctions the use of nuclear weapons "against the allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them." Nogovitsyn that would include elements of strategic deterrence systems, he said, according to Interfax.

Stewart's pic of McCain hugging Bush while running this quote was classic!!God I love America.

I don't understand our politicians on this. McCain, Obama, Bush, all seem to be in favor of these agreements; they're all for offering NATO to the Ukraine, and a missle defense plan to Poland. And I don't get it.

I don't like Putin at all, but I do like Russia. Why are we trying to antagonize the Russians? What will this gain us? I don't see it. We have no plans to invade Costa Rica, but I have to believe that if China offered Costa Rica a missile defense plan or a military guarantee, we'd be pissed off about it.

If this was a partisan issue I'd probably find myself on the "liberal" side this time- except that Obama's for this stuff too. So maybe there's some logic here that I just don't understand...

The renewing of the cold war is just what we need to get our economy back on track.

Defense spending can fuel the economy and maybe restart the space race (this time to put a man on Mars).

Wouldn't our economy be better off increasing trade with Russia rather than attempting to isolate her?

Russia's neighbors, and really much of the western world, are very concerned about the roll back in freedom in Russia combined with what seems to be a very aggressive foreign policy. Given who Putin is I don't think it is at all out of the realm of reason to be concerned. We aren't having it. We and NATO are taking steps to head it off. Containment.

The Russian bear is waking up and it is very hungry. It wants its glory back and not just be a side bar player like it has in the last decade. It has tons of natural resources and a much better economy.

In a blind taste test that I saw on Dateline, Absolut vodka was awarded best tasting Vodka. No need for Russia.

Sure, but the whole thing is illogical. The main reason the Soviet Union collapsed was because Russia could not afford any more to rule over all of those territories. So it withdrew back into Russian borders, and allowed all these other lands to become independent. Now Russia's healed and ready to be tough again. But the minute it tries to take over all of the countries, it will be faced with the same problems it had before.Russia could be a much more powerful nation, and have a much wealthier citizenry, if it used its control of natural gas to open up tons more trade, and stop all this military nonsense. Hopefully they'll figure this out.

We have ideological differences that prevent us from doing that. I am not an expert on Russia but Putin is bring back the old KBGish style authoritarian regime and the most amazing thing about it is that the Russian people like him (Remind you of anyone?)

If it turns out that Putin is madman like Hitler or Stalin, then yes, we're going to have to confront him (like Hitler) or contain him (like Stalin.)

But from what I've read about this man, I doubt it. Yes, he's a cold blooded killer, and he wants to reassert Russian supremacy in Eastern Europe. That's a given. But he's also more realistic, IMO, than those two, and I think he's a man who can be dealt with. Don't forget that he'll probably only be in power another 10 years or so; and we don't know yet how authoritian the Russian government will have become when Putin retires. And we do have some common interests- I don't believe the conservative hyperbole that Putin is helping Iran gain nukes- that would be suicidal, since Iran is much closer to them than to us. Russia has to be concerned with the rise of China and could be an ally of ours in this regard.

I'm for condemning Russia when they take aggressive actions, but for increasing trade and trying to work with Putin. Call me an appeaser, but I don't consider this the same situation as 1934-1939.

The best book about the collapse of the USSR is Lenin's Tomb by David Remnik. It won the Pulitzer Prize, and pretty much affirms what I wrote above.

Unfortunately none. But the world moves on.

"Poland, by deploying (the system) is exposing itself to a strike — 100 percent," Nogovitsyn, the deputy chief of staff, was quoted as saying.

Boy would that be a bad idea.
Really? Why? Who will stop them?
Us. Poland is a NATO member.
You really think we'd do something? :goodposting:

Yeah, he's PM as long as he wants it. None of us have any idea how long that is.

Yeah, but think this through.Russia either bombs or invades Poland. We are either in the last months of the Bush Administration or in the first couple of the new one, whomever it might be. We are still in Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran is still a thorn and our economy is still considered bad by a majority of Americans even though it really isn't.

What administration has the popular will behind either retalitory bombing or using enough of amilitary force in Poland to do something about it? Do we send the troops to Poland and open them up to remove the Russians, or do we draw another line?

To me, this was always the sleeping back door problem that our current foreign policy never considered viable enough to plan for. I don't know if we can stop them from attacking Poland without doing something really really horrible.

Correct, the UN has no say in NATO. And since we are a security council member as well anything Russia proposes is hostage to our vote there.
