Ruvell Martin, where's he fit in? (1 Viewer)

Ruvell's done pretty well in camp.

He's "supposed to" be taking a back seat to all these draft picks but.....

So where's he fit in? Thoughts/projections for him?

(Can you talk about Ruvell Martin's play during camp?)

I think Ruvell is having an excellent camp. He has made a couple of big-time catches just in the last two days. Ruvell is a guy that you get excited about because you've seen him grow since the day that he has been here. He continues to get better each day and each year. He has done a great job with his body.
same quote above but in article
As Aaron Rodgers enters his first season as the Packers' starting quarterback, he inherits one of the most talented receiving corps in the league, and hopes the special connection that he has developed with third-year wideout Ruvell Martin will serve as one more benefit.

The bond between the two began in 2005, Rodgers' rookie season, when Martin was signed to the Packers' practice squad in November, and both players worked on the scout team in preparation for each week's opponent.

"The connection we formed when he first came in and was working the scout team a bunch has really carried over," Rodgers said. "I have a lot of trust in him as a player. We connect well personality-wise off the field. I just feel like when I throw the ball to Ruvell, he's going to be in the right position to make the catch."

Rodgers chuckled when he recalled a game where his comfort level with Martin resulted in him incurring the wrath of Head Coach Mike McCarthy. When starter Brett Favre left with an elbow injury vs. New England in November 2006, Rodgers saw the most extensive action of his career to that point as he played the entire second half.

"I threw one ball to him and I came off to the sidelines and Mike (McCarthy) ripped me," Rodgers said. "He said, 'why did you throw over there?' I said, 'That's my guy.'"

Martin agreed that the connection dated back to his practice squad days, and said he continues to work toward developing it even more now in practice.

"I think I take time to make sure after every play, or if there is a questionable play, I'll go over afterwards and ask him what he was thinking so I can make the adjustment for next time," Martin said. "I think he has the same dialogue with me and with all of the receivers, and that's important, to make sure you're on the same page with the quarterback.

Sometimes the tandem doesn't need to talk to get on the same page.

"I don't think we lack for verbal communication, but I think the necessity of it isn't there as much," Rodgers said. "If there is a route or a ball, we just kind of give each other the look and we know what the other person is looking for."

Martin, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in '05 with San Diego, caught 16 passes in 2007, with 15 of them either going for first downs or touchdowns, with four scores. He has looked impressive during training camp, especially on fade routes when he can use his 6'4" frame to his advantage.

"I think Ruvell is having an excellent camp," McCarthy said. "He has made a couple of big-time catches just in the last two days. Ruvell is a guy that you get excited about because you've seen him grow since the day that he has been here. He continues to get better each day and each year."

With veteran receivers Donald Driver and Greg Jennings firmly entrenched in the starting lineup, Martin will be battling talented second-year wideout James Jones and rookie Jordy Nelson for playing time this season.

"I don't think roles have really been defined yet," Martin said. "In my head I'm always trying to do as much as I can for the team. Every time I am out there, anything they ask me to do. I would welcome a bigger role, but if it's not the case, it's not."

Whatever role Martin ends up playing in the offense in '08, he said improving every day will continue to be his focus.

"That's one of the tricks I have learned is to not look backwards, to always look forwards to the next practice," Martin said. "For me, anything I did in the past, good or bad, it doesn't really matter, because I feel I need to go out the next practice and have the best practice that I have ever had.

Martin has the same job he had last year and that is the #4 WR on the team. Nelson will push him for the spot and get in on special packages.

Martin is a big target in the red zone and that is were a lot of his value is.

I don't think it'll be the same since Koren's not there.I think he'll get more than the "nothing" everyone expected but from there I don't know what to predict.

keeping in mind Koren didn't play every week

per game Targets

Driver 8.1

Jennings 6.5

Jones 5.0

Koren 3.8

Ruvell 1.9

He's the WR5 on a team with a first year starter in a division with some tough defenses. I don't see where Ruvell has much value anytime soon or maybe ever.

If Rogers plays well, the best you can expect is 10-15 receptions, 1-2 td.

Best case he is #4. HJowever the Pack didnt draft Nelson early because they think of him as a practice squad player, so that pushes him to #5. If Swain plays ok, Ruvell will probably end up on the Vikings

Nelson is going to play a lot of K-Robs spots in certain packages as they both play well in the slot. Martin is more of a outside guy and have his packages that he plays in.Swain is going to be practice squad material, he really would have to step it up after a so so start in camp to take Marin's spot.

He's established a relationship with Rodgers so he should get some looks but it is crowded there. Word is Jones made great improvements this off season. I wouldn't expect a lot but red zone looks. Nelson should play in the slot. He's tall. He will get some looks but how many? Nelson is tall but faster.

From Todays Journal Sentinal (Milwaukee paper)

Two or three years ago, that wouldn't have been the case, but with Donald Driver, Jennings and Jones occupying the top three spots in the wide receiver rotation and Ruvell Martin proving to be worthy of at least the No. 4 spot, Nelson finds himself staring at a four-headed obstacle to being on the weekly active list.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, he's not WR5!!!!!!!!!!111111111

If anyone is projecting more than 25 receptions for Martin, please put your entire Packers offensive projections on display please because I'd sure like to see where those catches are going to come from.

sarcasm aside, that's the point of this thread. As I mentioned in post 1 he's probably supposed to have conceded to the draft pick WRs but, he's not just still there but still doing well. A sort of good monkey wrench for the Pack thrown in here. They put their time in developping him. I'm sure some coach's ego is boasting how he knew it all along or somesuch. That's the point here Tatum

I'm not putting down on him or anyone discussing him, but this seems like a classic case of August hope-against-hope that some player will emerge from the depths of a roster to maybe, just maybe put up fantasy points. Martin may be talented, but the point here is that he's on one of the worst rosters in the league if you're rooting for him to get opportunities for receptions over his teammates. On any other roster aside from NE or Indy, or maybe another team like Washington that has also put a lot of draft picks into the WR position, Martin would be a WR3 or better. Like I said above, he's a WR4/WR5 depending upon how another recent draft pick, Nelson, develops and he has little real chance to get much better than that without switching teams. If I'm wrong (and maybe I am - I'm not as well read on Packers WR's as some here are) I'd like to hear why.

but Tatum how far down the "depths of a roster" is he?

week 1, he's playing with the 1s in the first Q too

I think me and you have gone round and round enough. You see my point now, point of the thread Q- Where's this guy fit in? It sure makes you think "hang on a sec" doesn't it?

Yes, I see him on that depth chart listed behind Greg Jennings, and equal to James Jones, with Jordy Nelson nipping at his heels. Even disregarding the fickle nature of preseason depth charts, who among Driver, Jennings or Jones is he going to beat out for more catches? Even if he out and out beat out Jones and took his job, Jones was only the WR54 last year using standard fantasy scoring, and that was of course with the indestructable and remarkably effective Brett Favre putting up surprising numbers in that offense. If you're in a deep dynasty league and thin at WR, maybe you throw him on your roster as your WR7 or something. Like I said though, there are at least 25 NFL teams that I'd rather see him on if I was his fantasy owner.

Martin needs to go elsewhere - Philly? Atlanta? Minnesota? Seattle? SF? - to get a real chance to shine. He's lost in a numbers game.
