Ryan Mathews vs Tolbert in week 13 (1 Viewer)

Any injury updates on Mathews yet? Did he finally get all of the sand out of his ###### so he can play?

And if he does play, how do you see the split in reps going?

As a Tolbert owner, I don't really care if Mathews plays. Tolbert should still get double digit touches and the goal line work.

I agree. The run game has been good the last fews weeks with Tolbert and Sproles, messing around with it by giving Mathews significant carries would be a mistake. Even healthy, I don't like Mathews for the rest of the year, maybe next year will be his time.

If she plays, I see Ms. Mathews getting one carry and then getting hurt....again....as usual. :coffee:

My gut tells me that Mathews won't play this week. He said last week he had a "chance" as well, and I don't buy it with the way SD has been running the ball without him that they have any inclination to rush him back from an injury he has tweaked multiple times. However, I do see Mathews returning to a level significant enough to impact Tolbert's value around weeks 15 and 16.

I would think the Chargers would be better off saving him for the playoffs (assuming they get in). They don't need him now and he obviously is a slow healer. If they could give him another month, maybe they'd improve his chances of not hurting that ankle again. Idk...

I think Norv is a little tired of developing a gameplan all week dependent on Mathews and then him tweaking the injury and leaving the game. IMO, he either won't be played until 100% healthy or won't be a major part of the gameplan until then.

I think Tolbert will start regardless of whether Mathews plays. If Mathews plays, he may get a few reps here and there; and if he does well, he may get more. But I think the starting job is now Tolbert's to lose, and Mathews will have to substantially outperform him to get it back.

Norv already screwed this up the first time. I wonder if Mathews wouldn't have been injured again if they rested him rather than putting him out there week after week.

That said, I agree, Tolbert's the play regardless.

Mathews will be brought along slowly. Tolbert has been a really nice story. Mathews will get healthy just in time for Tolbert's injury, then be a solid fantasy option for the last 2 weeks of the fantasy playoffs. Own both but it's a keeper league and I still want Mathews to be my guy next year.

Ryan Mathews (ankle) returned to Chargers practice Wednesday.Mathews has been out since Week 9. He may have gotten over the worst of his continually re-aggravated high ankle sprain, but isn't going to be worth a fantasy start even in a favorable matchup against Oakland. Mike Tolbert has clearly taken a hold of the Chargers' feature back role. Mathews is looking at a change-of-pace back role at best the rest of the way.

Pencil in Tolbert for 50-60 and a TD if Matthews plays. 80-100 and a TD if not.I thought Matthews was going to be a stud, I will never draft another white RB early..well maybe Hillis.

He's half black I believe, so it's a toss up according to your logic

RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) returned to practice for the Chargers for the first time since he was injured at Houston on Nov. 7. Mathews' role is unknown, especially with Mike Tolbert sitting out Thursday for "precautionary" reasons.

Not sure why there are quotes there... or who's they are. Late in the season RB's sit out early practices all the time. They've been beaten up for weeks on end, no sense in inflicting extra damage when they could be healing. IMO Tolbert's absence is exactly that... precautionary.

He sat because of his hand/wrist injury in the Colts game. and it is totally precautionary, he left the colts game for a bit then came back in

Sounds like some nervous Tolbert owners in this thread :goodposting:

It just does not seem smart to give mathews a huge amount of carries this week / the guy has not been healthy all year. When he has played, hes put the ball on the ground. Tolbert has been great the past two weeks, and better than average the whole season. The chargers have little room for error; why let the fumbling hurt rookie take back the starter role? But he is Norv Turner, so I guess anything is possible.

I don't think there's any difference between "precautionary" reasons and precautionary reasons in this case. The quotes are there because the writer got bored any wanted to add some random punctuation. It was between quotes and backslashes, and he flipped a coin.

I prefer [brackets] personally.

Any Tolbert owners getting nervous? Looks like Mathews says he's "really healthy" and he's practiced in full all week. Tolbert also has this hand bruise which is probably no big deal but maybe enough to let Mathews/Sproles get a larger share.

you guys go ahead and start Mathews, come back and let us know how that works out for you. And if you have to start Sproles, good luck next year

Getting interesting. Was convinced that Tolbert was the start but now I'm not sure. Ball security is important and a bad hand doesn't help Tlbert much. Hope Tolbert practices today.

This would figure... I've been hanging on to Matthews all season and finally cut bait on Tuesday convinced that his value was lost for this season. I was planning on starting Tolbert this week... and now we've got clouds.

Antonio Gates (foot) and Mike Tolbert (hand) both returned to Chargers practice on Friday.

They're both expected to play against Oakland. ESPN's John Clayton confirmed earlier today that Gates' chances of suiting up were good, and we're confident in him enough to rank Gates as the No. 2 overall fantasy tight end for Week 13. Despite Ryan Mathews' (ankle) return, Tolbert qualifies as a strong RB2. He has a favorable matchup, and is always a good bet to score.

:hifive:

starting tolbert with confidence

I may be wrong, but I think many here are looking more at whether to start Tolbert as opposed to thinking about starting Mathews.

Yeah I sure as hell wasn't talking about Mathews/Sproles in terms of starting them - just whether or not they're gonna hurt Tolber's value. Right now I pulled Tolbert from my starting line up for Fred Jackson but it wasn't an easy decision.

CBS Rapid Reports Dec. 03, 2010 5:28 p.m. - FB-RB Mike Tolbert, who had 214 rushing yards and 2 TDs over the last two games, will remain the team’s lead back when RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) returns this week. “I would like (Tolbert) to be the lead guy and Ryan to be there with support,” coach Norv Turner said.
