Saints at Buccaneers (1 Viewer)

Donnybrook, I thought you were arguing that the Bucs got hosed. If you weren't, then we're arguing on the same side.
I actually thought the Bucs got hosed but I admit, according to the rules, I was wrong.

As others have mentioned, Freeman was definitely out of the pocket. With that explanation it looks like a good call.

Although I too am curious: how does one "re-establish himself inbounds?"

It means you have to have 2 feet back in bounds before you catch the pass.- you can't catch the ball in mid-air (after being out of bounds) and then land in bounds.- if your left foot is in bounds but your right foot is out-of-bounds, you can't just lift up your right foot to catch a pass. You've got to re-establish that foot before you catch the pass.

I thought he was fairly well re-established. Took like 2 or 3 steps back in bounds before he caught the pass.... but I only saw the play quickly.

Wait, so once the QB leaves the pocket, it's open season on the WR's?
There's pretty much no excuse for a defense allowing a gain of any yardage on a play of any kind once the QB leaves the pocket. All the rules change in their favor so much that if all the defenders were alert and aware, the QB leaving the pocket would be the same as stuffing a run at the line. No gain, loss of down.

Receivers usually get separation, though. It's not like a defender is always right there ready to lay a chuck. In the shortened confines of the end zone, though, the defense has some help from the white lines. And it's not "open season" -- defenders can still be called for holding, and once the ball is in the air defensive PI is still on the table.

As pointed out above, with a quote from the rule book -- being re-estalished back in-bounds didn't matter in this case. Williams, by rule, could not legally be the first person to touch the ball.

"Open season" is an exagerration ... but once the QB leaves the pocket -- even if still behind the LOS -- he becomes a "runner" and the downfield receivers become "blockers".The Saints defense employed this strategy once last season, at the end of the game versus the Titans (see 3:10-3:33). Really, it only helps when the offense is close to the end zone and is pressing for a score -- anywhere else on the field, the receivers have plenty of room to run away from the defenders.
