Saints Defense (1 Viewer)

The last two weeks the Saints D has put up 13 & 18 points in my league, which is above average defensive production.

So have they turned things around? Are they worth owning? I haven't seen the last few games so can't comment.

I do know that they have a pretty cake schedule coming up though, starting this week with Atlanta.

I still dont trust them. I need to see 4 solid weeks before i play them...
I thought I'd give the Titans one more week too back in Week 3. Then I couldn't grab them.Still curious if any homers have watched their games and seen improvement on D or if it's just a statistical mirage?

was about to ask the same question. cant say i feel all that confident trotting out tampa bay or jax this week.my biggest concern is the depleted titans offense, which might but the D in some precarious situations.

thanks homers.

They did play a terrible Carolina offense and a struggling Seattle team, but the rest of their schedule is filled with bad offenses.

In the game vs Seattle, they blitzed more than in any previous game and had great success doing so. Previously, they had relied on the DE's to get pressure and dropped people to protect a weak secondary, but that obviously has not been working this year, 1 sack all year before the game last week. In the 4th quarter vs Seattle, they started playing more coverage and Hasselbeck started to get going, so I'd expect them to bring more pressure until it stops working. And with Leftwich and Atlanta coming to the dome this week, the Saints defense may be a good play this week if your league is heavy on forcing TO's and sacks. The secondary is too bad at some spots for them not to get caught, so this agressive style may lead to teams putting up some more points on them, so adjust accordingly for your league.

any more homer input?

now that leftwich is starting, does that benefit NO chances (by leftwich having to learn a new offense and his statuesque presense behind the line).

thanks guys,

 Thanks for the info. Sounds like Saints are relying on a riskier style of play for their D. Fine by me. I'm thinking I might gamble with them this week.

Their odds on to get a large sack number, 4-6, at least a fumble and a pick, likely 2. And we've had a high number of pick sixes this year, unfortunately.

<== Extreme Homer so beware!!!

Here is my take on it (I've been to both home games plus watched every game atleast twice just to notice the 'little things'):

First of all, Jason stated the first couple of games, but was doing VERY poorly before he was hurt. Jason Craft replaced him and IMO, he isn't nothing to talk about. We have what should be 2 extremely studly DEs in Grant & Fresh Prince. That being said, we were relying on our front 4 to produce, while dropping everyone back to help a struggling secondary (as said by a previous poster). Also take note that Mark Simineaux is nothing more than a statue in the middle. Gary Gibbs was trying too hard to deny the 'big' play, thus making open season for everything else. Well, when we started getting beat from everything else, we tried to adjust, thus opening up that big play.

I think the turning point was Sunday night's game. Hollis played more snaps than usual, as well as Usama Young. Hollis had a great night. The key though, IMO, is when we put Young in @ Nickel and ran a few 'trick' plays on key drives, mostly all including Roman Harper. To be more specific, one play we put Grant & Will Smith side by side on right. That obviously caused a little panic and needless to say they took up all of Seatle's resources on that side. Then what did we do... created open green between Roman Harper & the QB. The first Person Harper touched was Matt, and it wasn't just a touch either.

The are some key differences between our D now & how it was at the start of the year. A few are: Brian Young was really not healthy, but he getting better. Hollis is finally getting more reps because he is getting a tad bit closer to playing shape (although he has about 40 more pounds to go), Jason David is out for the year, thus giving Usama Young more PT... I bet he starts opposite of Mike in a few weeks (even though his true side is right behind Mike), and also take note that that was only Harper's 9th NFL game (went out week 4 last year)... so he getting better after each week of experience.

To sum it all up, I don't think that this is just a statistical Mirage. Gibbs showed what he can do last year with a second-rate D. I could be wrong, but I hope I'm right!

Sorry if this was a little choppy, I typed it in a hurry.
